It sounds like you installed the game, but it's not saving your missions. I'm just coming back to SH3, but I remember well that you can only safely save games either in port, or on the surface with no other traffic anywhere near you. How are you trying to save games?

Have you installed to C or Cx86 ?

All too confusing. :) I intend to save the game well away from any program file folder. I'm thinking C:\Ubisoft\silenthunter3\ or whatever.

Keeping the installation away from C/ProgramFolder should see you good to go but personally I install into D/Ubisoft/SHIII

Hey Guys

Bought SH 3 after discovering this forum with all the mods. Been playing other mods for awhile...

Anyway, after hours of trying, from this site's instructions and from Ubisoft's site, I have been unable to install on W7 Home 64b.

Mainly I have installed, patched. Can not install NoDVD - not allowed, even though I am admin. Also can not install elsewhere apart from X86 as clicking on browse kicks out error. Starforce removal also ran.

System. Intel i5 Quad
ATI 5700 1 Gb
Ram 4Gb

Any help out there? Frustration is running high. Either you gain a new member or the dog gets a new toy!!

Thanks.....

I've never attempted to install a version of the game with StarForce on W7 before, I purchased a new game disc.

Sooooooooo presuming you have successfully removed StarForce.............install to X86, the game should create a Ubisoft folder and all the programme files can be found within.

Right click on the SH3 exe in said folder (the one on desktop as well) then click on Properties then the Compatability tab then tick Disable Desktop Composition.

Hopefully you'll then be good to go.

I am not even sure whether or not Starforce is present. The removal tool says no drivers, it's not under processes nor apparent in any files. Jury still out...

I did tick said box but still it gives property system error and the old windows me/nt 4.0/etc line. Even through Windows compatible manual settings it shows incompatible.

Am I right in saying that it should launch before 4gb patch or is the patch essential to launching? Same for the no-dvd...

At this rate I am wearing out the disk and hdd installing and uninstalling...man, can it really be this ridiculous?

Thanks for your help - hopefully something small missed somewhere...

If you are in need of the 'no DVD' then it is highly likely your disc is old and has Star Force incorporated.

Is your installation patched to 1.4b

I would concentrate on getting the game to work before thinking of the 4GB patch.

Rebel22777
03-05-12, 03:12 PM
Not so much a need for no-dvd as just following steps that has worked for others. And each has subtle and not so subtle differences in steps. This puts me into an elaborate process of elimination and discovery to boot.

For example, I downloaded your 4gb patch and when I tried to install it, it gave me different feedback from the one I have. Whether or not that is good is about to be discovered.

I have uninstalled everything, ran the SF removal, cleaned the registry and rebooted. Now I'll try and do just the game and see...

Just on a point of order, to sync our "language". The order of install would be the game, then 1.4b, then 4gb followed by any mods? Or are the 1.4b and 4gb the same thing? :hmmm:

Ps. The control panel shows the version as 1.4 but the version column appears to be numeric and not alpha numeric
and may be unable to read the "b". I'll patch it anyways.

Thanks for sticking around...

Or are the 1.4b and 4gb the same thing? :hmmm:

They are different - the v1.4 patch is an official Ubisoft patch that updates the game to that version.

The 4GB patch just patches the SH3.exe file so that it will use up to 4GB of memory (if available) instead of the original 2GB limit. It doesn't do anything else.

Updating the game to v1.4 is always the first step, but you should be able to apply the 4GB patch at any time after that (before or after enabling other mods). You can run a lot of mods successfully without the 4GB patch but there is a limit, and some of the bigger mods like Merchant Fleet Mod (which adds a ton of ships to the game) pretty much require it. So going ahead and using it before you start loading up on mods is advisable since you already know about it anyway.

Jimbuna's right though, getting the vanilla v1.4 game to run properly should be the first priority. Once you have that squared away you can start piling on the extras.

I should have come here first. Things are starting to make more sense...
In following steps given elsewhere I may have done too much too soon and got myself confused in the process. Having said that, I am however concentrating on the vanilla and patches in order to build a foundation for mods to follow.

OK. Step by step... and a new problem jumps out - First the above problem, then... "This program cannot update the installed version of silent Hunter III US DVD v1.0 to v1.3 because of the following reason: Program files (x86)\Ubisoft\Silent HunterIII\data\Menu\de_menu.txt: unknown version."
But the control panel shows v1.4.

Edit: Got the European patch and it installed, now showing exe as v1.4.0.1. Running game brings up original problem. I have tried running it in compatibility mode for every single option, from W95 to W7. Nada.

I also tried with and without ticking the desktop comparison but no dice.

Orders?

I'm having the exact same problem. I bought a new laptop today and was looking forward to play SH3 with the settings on high for the first time ever, but it won't let me boot up the game. I've installed SH3 and the 1.4b patch, as well as SH3 Commander, which won't work until I've run the original game at least once. Hopefully I can get some help on here because I'm unable to find a copy of Silent Hunter 4 or 5 in store, so I have to get my fix with Silent Hunter 3 at least.

I have the new DVD version that is already patched to v1.4. I'm running a triple screen setup and couldn't get the game to load. I finally got it to load by checking the box "Run in 640x480 screen resolution." That's in the properties box on the sh3.exe file. After the game loaded, I unchecked full screen. Now it runs perfectly. But I sure would like to have a larger screen!

I've gone through all the resolution fixes and compatibility modes (except for Display Changer). I end up with two workable results:
1. Running a tiny 1024 x 768 window at the lowest resolution
2. Running a higher resolution but having it run on all three screens at the same time.

Has anyone with an triple screen eyefinity setup found a way to run SH3 in a larger window?

Hello guys,

Recenty I switched from Win XP to Win 7 64bit

Instantly I spotted some sound problems with Sh3+GWX running on Win7:

1. The sound of diesel engines dissapears after pausing the game. The sound then can be revived, only by switching speeds or sometimes changing stations. Yesterday I could even hear aircraft flying above while I was at 60 meters depth ?

2. All sounds in GWX seems to be much quiter in Win7, than it was in WinXp.

Running onboard Realtek ALC888 soundcard with the latest drivers from Realtek website for Vista/Win7 32/64 bit

How can I solve these problems ? The first one gives the most headache at the moment :-?

Hey guys I have a problem. So yesterday I installed SH3. First it did not run, but after I changed my screen resolution it started to work. But there is still a problem, whenever i start a patrol my graphics are all weird. There are all sorts of lines that permit me to see some things. All my PC specs are fine and it should run the game smoothly. What should I do?

...Win7 introduced a sound mixer that allows individual programs to have their own volume level slider, instead of all combined in a single master volume slider. I suggest you check the level of the mixer (speaker icon in taskbar) while SH3 is running. So you may need to alt-tab out of it.

At the risk of being a "Me-too" post, my patch/modify procedure has failed, and I can't interpret the failure note from Bill Gates....
My trusty Compaq CQ-60 laptop is running Windoze 7 Ultimate, 64 bit. I've still got my disk from when I bought it in 2006, and it's the same disk that runs fine on my XP desktop.
I ran the procedure from the forums referencing uninstalling SH3, using the StarForce removal tool, re-installing without running the game, patching with the 5 files mentioned.
The game runs the opening screen and movie, then the whole bar graph that says it's loading. Then I get a panel that says something similar to "Silent Hunter has failed..." and the following details:

This might as well be Sanskrit or Aramaic to me. Does it make sense to anyone here?

FWIW, I've gone ahead and ordered the patched/SF-free SH3/SH2 combo from Amazon through our forum (hopefully the $1.50 premium will help out, in addition to the modest donation I put in last month).

I thought I was better at computers than I apparently am. :wah:

Don't know if this helps anyone but I had windows 7 on a slightly older computer (Not too old but couldn't run SH3 with reflections on, and slowed down sometimes) and I made sure to install all of my games straight to a folder I created directly on the C drive, not the (Program Files x86) folder.

Pisces - I also checked it, all volumes are set to maximum but Win7 somewhat reduces volume in application like SH3 no matter what.

You're lucky, I can't even get SH3 to run on my eyefinity setup, monitor refresh is 60, installed on e drive, windows xp compatability checked, tried setting the above but while it booted up fine, when I exited it knocked my eyefinity out so much, I had to reinstall my drivers, so not the greatest option. Sadly looks like I'm back to sh5 which will at least boot up with eyefinity running.

Hi guys, I´m having some problems running SH3 on W7 64bits. I read this entire thread and couldnt find anybody with the same problem.

First of all I´m new to SH3 but not new to submarines nor naval warfare. I guess I´d skipped SH3 back in the days, going from TF1942 and Silent Service(s) directly to 688i HK, Harpoon, FC, SC, DW and SH4. I didn´t know SH3 was the best of the series.

Recently, I bought SH5 just to discover that its all bugged and flawed. Tried the mods, and despite getting some to work, I guess the problem with all the laggy UI and sluggish graphics are caused by my computer. Its just a damn good laptop but not so good when it comes to gaming. Its limited to its video card, a nVidia 330M. So I´m gonna save it for later. For now, I´m gonna try SH3.

So I bought from GF and had it set. But as soon as I run it, and get 3 or 4 kernel errors, but to my surprise it still loads up and runs fine I guess!!!! I´d tried running as administrator, on compatibility mode XP(SP3),... nothing. Everytime I start the game, I get these 3 or 4 kernel errors and soon after I OK´d them, the game loads up fine.

Is it normal? Did anybody else experience this?
I still didnt try the mods, nor the fixes,

I've tried damned near everything said here to get SH3 to work on my new 'puter. Did the whole deal where you set the setup to admin, all users... then install. don't do gameshadow, blah, blah, blah. Right down to where you copy in the no dvd crap....WHICH YOU CANNOT FIND,unless you want to pay. NO!, I refuse to pay some site I know nothing about and give them my bank account number to *maybe* be able to play a game I bought 6 years ago. Yeah, I know, ya'll can't post links to stuff, blah blah blah. THIS SUCKS!, I LOVE this game. Running win 7 home premium, 64 bit, 4 gigs ram, 2.5 Ghz processor.... should run it like a tank through the desert. I mean, the thing runs Assassin's Creed with everything maxed.. smooth as silk. also a UBI game. I installed SH2, modded it out, default location...smooth as silk,( still fun to play), dual loaded another copy, morphed it to Pac Aces,( still great, thanks you guys), no problems. Why don't they FIX this? If I buy the 'Gold' Edition, will IT work? HELP!:/\\!!

I know it's been said before but I'll say it again, DON'T install to the default directory.

I'll repeat that, DO NOT install to the default directory (C:\Program Files (x86)\ ...

Windows 7 (any bit), Windows Vista (any bit), Windows XP (64 bit), etc ...
These are designed with security measures. If you install a program like this one (SHIII with all the mods), you cannot get it to run because the mods and patches and such are designed to update files in the game directory. If you are using the "Program Files (x86)" directory, these security measure in the Windows OS's are designed to block the files from being edited and manipulated by the mods from SHIII and thus, the game will not run. If you only want to run vanilla SHIII (without any mods, updates, patches, and a generic resolution), then by all means, use the "C:\Program Files (x86)\ ... default installation.

Best suggestion is to create a custom folder for your install of SHIII.
I use "C:\Program Games\ ..." . This way Windows does not automatically block any files from being edited and manipulated by the mods and patches I put in it.

I believe a lot of the errors people are posting are because of the 'security measures' put in place by Microsoft on these newer OS's.

And another think regarding resolutions for those with the larger screens and best video cards; there are mods here in the forum for high resolution screens. See this one for a great example http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=196400
The third post from Brett25 will give you an excellent place to start for getting the game to run on a high resolution. You will have to search around for all the mods to get everything looking proper on the screen, but it's worth it.

Frau Kaleun mentioned earlier and it's worth mentioning again, take your time and go one step at a time. Make sure the vanilla is working properly first before you start putting updates and patches, mods and customizations to it all. Otherwise, you spend twice as much time and still have to go step by step.

Good luck to you all.

Hangman, thanks for your help. For about a week I was having trouble with a Vista install.

Perhaps you can help me out with something, in case I should end up with troubles again down the line.

You recommend creating a new directory (instead of default) to install to.

I have done this, yet despite creating on (in my case Vista machine: C:\Ubi\ SH 3) When the installation started, the install went DIRECTLY to the default drive; C:\Progam Files(x86)\Ubisoft\SH III .

I had to cut and paste from that drive to the one I specified. Everything is working perfectly, but despite designating and "directing" the installl to go to a specific (NON-Program files) folder, that is where everything went to during the install.

How do you circumvent this process?

Thank you.

Cutting and pasting on a newer OS, ... OUCH !!!
And I have to say if it's running for you, something got screwed up along the way and you are very, very lucky.
Let me explain; The newer OS's (from Windows 98 and newer I believe) have a registry. Now Windows 98 was a very basic registry and many programs could be manipulated after the install. I say manipulated in the way of cutting and pasting to different directories.
Windows XP, Vista, 7, ... the registries for these OS's are rather bloated and somewhat difficult to work with. Cutting and pasting to different directories would not allow the program to run because the registry which now controls all the DLL's and drivers and such for the program are pointed to the original install directory. Again, with the security measures now in the newer OS's, when it would recognize something has been moved from the original directory, the OS would simply mark the program as unusable and suggest the user to reinstall.
One of the reasons most programs (at least up to Vista & 7) would always ask the user to reboot the machine before running the program was to 'set' the directory, DLL's, and drivers to their place of install. With Vista and 7, a reboot is still needed to 'set' the information to the registry, but if you simply run the program right after an install, the OS writes other information to the registry which 'sets' the install information.
One of the reasons behind the registry and the security measures mentioned earlier was that someone could install a program, then grab all the files from the install and create a rough program disk to basically pirate the software. It's also designed to protect your OS from viruses and malware.

When running an install from a disk or downloaded EXE from a reputable source, there will always be an option for a specific directory install. Sometimes just before the install the setup manager asks the user if the following directory is acceptable (you can type in a new directory in the path box), and sometimes the install directory can only be adjusted when the user picks an "Advanced Install" option or, in the install dialog box - in the upper right corner - a button for creating a new directory. These options depend on the program and the maker essencially as each piece of software is different.
It's been 5 years since I installed SHIII so I don't remember off-hand what type of install it offers, but I know the option is there.

That may have been the case, but, nobody hosting the nodvd file now will give it away without signing up for thier crap....runs about 9.99. Since I just found a copy of SH3 w/sh2 free for 6.99 on amazon , I will consider the problem solved. Although, that stubborn side of me considers it to be 'givingup', meh, all I really want is to play the game. My old copy is plenty scuffed up, anyhow... thanks for your help

Spent a good hour last night hunting down the NoDVD file. Had to go thru some pretty sketchy sites. Ended up on some russian site, but I found it.
SO!!!
if anyone else needs the file, PM me and I can send you a link to where I've personally put it up online. We shouldn't hafta be digging around in shady download sites to find this file. =]
=D
.. all these years, and it's still the "official fix" for the problem, yet we STILL can't openly link to it. :/\\!!

EDIT: Of course, i haven't actually done my Win 7 install yet. I plan on doing that today, shortly here. You can assume everything went fine unless I say otherwise ;)

EDIT EDIT: I'm one of those bullheaded guys who stubbornly refuses to buy a newer copy of SH3. I bought mine early, and thus paid full price. I'll be verdammt if I'm gonna shell out more money for a game I already own just to get a SF free version <grrrr> For me, it would quite literally be a choice between buying another copy of a game I already own, or buying SH4, which I've wanted for years and years now. :P

I've got SH3 1.4b with GWX 3.0 running great. I'm trying to use the resolution fix mod so I can enjoy the game at a nice resolution.

I install the mod and get the config file to my native res 1600x900 but now when running the game it goes to a black full screen and freezes there until I get out via task manager.

Anyone else have this problem and have a solution?

I'm running W7 64 on a laptop with a ATI card.

Ok..I'm new to the forum and I am not very savvy with computers. I'm an older man who just wants to play silent hunter III again!!! I purchased this game way back 05 and played it on my Windows Xp system from the CD. 7 years later.... I can't find the CD so I purchased a copy from Ubisoft website and the download was installed. I have a new computer running Windows 7 64bit and I had troubole at first getting it to load so I came to this site and saw where I needed to turn down the resoluiton. Good info on here. Now I would like to add the mods that you guys are talking about on here espicially the grey wolf add on. Here is where I am running into problems. When I go to download from the grey wolf site I get like 8 files that need to download. When I go to run the exe file I don't understand where the files need to go.

All you have to do is have the files in the same folder and run it. Once started it will ask you where you want the file to be installed. Just direct it toward your SH3 game folder and it will do the rest.

Guys I had in the past a working SH3 on my Vista and now Im having difficulties with my Win 7 OS. I did not use the so called patched version of SH3 but its from a standard box; and I always patched it myself using the patch from the greywolves site.

I did all the stuff except the screenres setting; cuz I had no probs with the wide res screen earlier.

But my main problem is; whatever I try to do; I still getting that protection system that "this application can be run with a release version of MS Win 95 98 etc etc....only; Its a small grey popbox.

Well; I thought if I can run starforce remover OR updater I should be able to get rid of that error but when I run those 2; it says : "there are no drivers to remove OR there are no drivers to update.

Any solution to get rid of this protection system message?:o

How new is your copy of SH3? It may already be fully patched right out of the box. If the date on the box is 2008 or newer, you're good to go and don't need the patch.

Question?? IF everthing continues to work will GWX3 or other mods cause a problem with resolution?

1) installed in program files

2) MOVE the game to other HDD
- apply patch 1.4b (yes, my DVD is old! 2006!) --> purpose= update game. dont do if recent DVD (2008+)
- run starforce protection REMOVER --> purpose= get rid of what i do not need to run game
- apply NoCD --> purpose= make the game run on this windows without complaining that this windows can not be used
- run = okay
- add GWX
- run = okay

Game ready to go and to be further modded

Like most here, I ran into issues getting SHIII to run properly on my newer Win7 machine. Most of it, from what I can tell, is the fact that the newer monitors run in a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio, compared to the 4:3 that was common at the time of it's release. I run on a 1920x1200 resolution monitor (16:10 aspect ratio) and the only way I was able to get SHIII to run was the following steps:

Install and update to 1.4b
Install Res Fix
Install GWX3.0
modify the main.cfg and d3d9.cfg files to reflect the appropriate resolution (1900x1200 in my case)

Once I did that, I had to manually switch to 1600x1200 prior to starting the game. If you're lazy like me, you can take the following additional steps:
Obtain DC from 12noon.com (http://12noon.com/?page_id=80)
Setup a batch file that switched my resolution automatically to 1600x1200

The site at 12noon.com provides complete instructions on how to switch the resolutions. I had the best results by switching the resolution, then launching the game, then backing out the resolution change on the last line.

Here's a copy of my batch file:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\12noon Display Changer\dc64.exe" -width=1600 -height=1200 -refresh=60
"D:\Games\SilentHunter3\sh3.exe"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\12noon Display Changer\dc64.exe" -width=1920 -height=1200 -refresh=60

Hope this helps!

Hi everybody, I've been trying to get SH3 to run on Win 7 and have encountered a problem.
I'm installing off of a dvd already patched to v 1.4 and to a games folder I have created other than the default. Installation goes smoothly, and after rebooting when I double click on the desktop short cut or click on the icon in the start menu I get the usual (Win7) dialogue box asking me if I'm happy to allow the program to make changes to my computer, I click 'yes' and I'm taken straight back to the desktop where the pointer changes to the 'whirlything' for a minute or so and then nothing, just the desktop. Now for the wierd part....If I then double click on the desktop shortcut or the start menu icon SH3 launches fine and indeed seems to run o.k. (have completed Naval Academy but not yet had time to try career). If I then exit back to desktop and run Task Manager, the first attempt to run still seems to be running (SH3'something'.exe if memory serves), apparently in the background?
I've tried every possible combination of compatability modes and running as administrator but always with the same result. Does anyone have any ideas?

You should not get a prompt asking if you want this program to make changes, unless it is in Program Files, or you configured it to run as administrator on that compatibility tab of the shortcut.

The file that shows as still running in Task Manager after shutting down the 2nd (successful launch) is SH3.exe*32

What difference does that make?

Sometimes on my win7 64bit system the sh3.exe won't run. In taskmanager I can see sh3.exe and a new rundll32 process. No game window appears. When I run the game with admin rights it works. I renamed the exe and all is fine, I can run the game in user context and everytime the game is working well. So it's worth a try :06:

Thanks all for your help chaps, and it looks as if all is now working o.k.

Was looking at the Win7 thread in SH4 and it mentioned running first with the graphic card on default settings, shutting that launch down via Task Manager if unsuccessful, making any necessary changes to the graphic card then lauching again. So far it seems to be working!!

Thanks again and if this solution has been posted here previously, apologies for not having seen it and giving credit where due.

Did as you described, mate, but my SH3 still crushes.
So, my situation is following.
I got Win7 Pro x64, GeForce 560 Ti SLI. SH3 from steam, so I don't need to use any no-dvd, right?
I've installed JSGME, and High Resolution Fix, and activated it in that mod manager. No matter what resolution I set in d3d9.cfg and main.cfg - the game runs only if I change my native resolution (1920x1200) to 1024x768, 1280x1024 or 1360x768. If d3d9 mod is disabled, the error is "Can not initialize 3D engine", if I enable it, APPCRASH appears almost instantly, with d3d9.dll failure module.
I've also installed Living Silent Hunter 3, it runs, but I want to play this awesome game in High Res!
Cheers, captains, you got some wonderful comminity up here.

I think there are various threads about this very problem. I myself just bought a non Star Force copy as they are selling those now. I got mine on Amazon for I think $10 just to avoid this issue.

It's been a long time since I've played and was wanting to start playing again so following a friends advice because of the Star Force issue in 7 I made the choice to get non Star Force version.

Since getting my new computer, about two years ago, I have not been able to go to war with my favorite game platform. The tips given in this thread have made it possible to play the game (bought retail, the first year it came out). Since early this evening, I've added the Grey Wolves, and my wife hasn't been able to get me away from the computer!

Thanks to everyone for their input. I had to use a no cd file, and I'm getting about 30 fps. I'm having a little fun with the Naval Academy, before setting out on my first patrol. It's going to be a long night ...

Hi all,
I'm new here and wanted to thank everyone that contributed to this thread. I'm running on windows 7 also now, with a resolution of 1920x1200. I had an old copy from when SH3 was first released that I wanted to play again.

Just to reiterate for anyone else that might still be having problems with the resolution on windows 7, because this is something I missed the first few times trying these solutions for some reason, even though it has been repeated several times by people here:

Even though you want to run the game at a higher resolution like 1920x1200, you still have to set your windows desktop resolution to at least 1600x1200 in order for the game to start without errors. It will change the resolution up to what you want as long as you set it correctly in the cfg files as stated in this thread. Seems the key for me was finally getting it through my thick skull that I needed to start in a 4:3 aspect ratio, hehe.

Thanks again all! :salute:

Thanks, Jimbuna!

Actually, I'm an old member of the site, from way back. However, my computer died about 2 years ago, and I couldn't remember my username, so I made up a new one.

I am currently in the first patrol, on Aug. 4, 1939, and have just passed the Shetland Islands. I had a beautiful target, last night, and couldn't shoot because the Brits and Germany weren't at war, yet. But I still did a standard approach for practice. Got to within 500 meters of a large tanker, waited until the AOB was 90 degrees, and then "fired". I'm sure that my crew was ticked at me ... :D

BTW, I'm using the Grey Wolves 3.0 ...

Hey all. I don't want to labour this point too far, but am having trouble with launching SH3 in Windows 8, and I think the issue is one of resolution, so just wanted to check I have things right.

So I set the desktop resolution to a native 4:3 resolution, such as 1600x1200, set the game resolution in the cfg file to...that same resolution? Then it should launch ok?

Currently the game crashes when loading the map, with one little sliver of the download bar remaining. However, strangely, I can load all the sub school missions. Which doesn't make much sense to me :haha:

But many thanks on any clarifications offered :salute:

if you can load and do the school missions then i don't think it could be resolution (in fact i don't think the game would run if it was resolution related). do you have any mods activated if so can you list their order? do you have the 4GB patch?

nattai
05-10-13, 02:27 AM
Ah, I wasn't aware of that 4GB patch. Just applied it and it has loaded for me, so many thanks :salute:

Perhaps the game was hanging and crashing when trying to load all the objects in a career patrol? I don't know, but it did seem to fix the issue, so thanks again

Hmm, on further testing it still seems to often crash on load up. Was just lucky a few times in a row when I tested it before. Very strange.

As for mods I only have GWX, OLC MKiic, MKiid patch, ACM Reloaded and ACM lite installed, but its not a conflict there. When I remove all the mods in JGSME I still get the issue. Bah!

so not even using the game resolution of 1024x768? thats weird might be one or more of your graphics card settings. that or the graphics card itself...

Don't you think it maybe the game considering all the problems people are reporting. I've not a problem with any other games concerning resolution.
It doesn't put me off playing, I am just wonder if it wouldn't look even better at higher resolution.

desertstriker
05-29-13, 12:23 AM
Normally though it is fixable as something is overlooked. The thing that gets me is your card seems to be modern enough these problemes should not be happening. I know when i first installed my issue was that I had not switched the card to auto switch with aplication and would not initialize the 3d engine.

Also some cards (and systems for that matter) do not want to run older games. Mind you i was working entirely off of your card type. There are about 4 differnt win 7 versions, 6 or so if you count 32 and 64 bit versions, no idea what RAM... and yes it could just be the game which in of it self has 2 different versions alone starforced and non-starforce. this is one of the big problemes with computers not everybodies system is the same :wah: so it can make helping people more difficult.

anyways yeah i think the game looks better in its higher resolution which without painstakingly modding for widescreen is 1024x768

What path is your SH3 installed under? If you installed in Program Files or Program Files (x86), you can encounter access control issues, especially when running mods. It's best to install the game to its own folder on the root directory. IIRC the installer defaults to Program Files (x86).

Yes, better to have a secondary drive to install everything to.

I recently installed Silent Hunter 3, but I am having some issues getting it to run correctly.

The game starts up just fine and lets me load a mission, but when I try to leave the sub's command room to use the periscope or free view the screen becomes extremely blurry and the water is black, not sure if its an issue with windows 7 or if its a graphics card issue.
My pc has 1.8 ghz processor, 2gb ram, graphics card is Geforce 6150SE Nforce 430 with 256 mb dedicated memory.

Is it an issue with graphics card or windows 7? or something else?

I uninstalled SHIII from program files (x86) and a fresh install to my D drive root. D:/SilentHunterIII updated to 1.4b added the 4GB patch and the Res fix and reloaded no DVD, and removed the two intro videos from the movies folder. I still get "cannot initalise 3D engine" at all resolutions other than 800x600. Its not a Grey Wolves problem as I haven't installed that yet.

You had to patch your installation to 1.4b?

Do you have an old - original - starforced - DVD?

If so - install the game, patch and 'no DVD' it, before applying 4GB and HiResFix.
There may be a problem with 4GB first and 'no DVD' second anyway, as 'no DVD' replaces the 4GB'd SH3.exe.

What monitor do you deal with?

06-05-13, 03:29 PM
Ok I uninstalled. Reinstalled exactly in the order you have just prescribed and still no joy. My monitor is a LG Flatron L246WH (1920x1200 native res). Yes its a starforce DVD. I'm showing my age.

I still use the original 2005 version as well, but I don't use the HiResFix.
Did you try to run the game without the HiResFix?

Did you update your graphics card drivers?
Maybe it's worth a try to switch back one/two/a few versions?

sooo cold
06-05-13, 06:18 PM
Yes I've tried it with each fix only and in different combos. I always have the latest graphics driver. I play plenty of other games too, so I don't want to revert back to an earlier driver really. I used to play this on WIN XP on a 1280x1024 res screen just fine when it first came out. I just though it would be nice to play again. Note GWX3 mentions somewhere they fixed the resolution problem in their latest version but that doesn't work for me either.

Strange...

Run a DXDiagnosis and see, if there are any problems named.

START -> Run -> "dxdiag".

Work through the tabs and save the results as a TXT file.
There's a button on the last tab to do this.
Copy and post the results here - at least the upper part including the audio section.

Please post a screenshot of your 800x600 show.
Do you have to switch your screen to this resolution manually to start the game or does it switch and pop up itself?

I have to switch my screen to this resolution (800x600) manually to start the game.

Nice rig!

DXDiag shows your monitor mode at 59 Hz?

This is a 640x480 JPG. Did you scale it?
Please check your screenshot BMP to verify.

I don't run Nvidia hardware and don't know about your options at the Nvidia control panel.
Please try to check, if your graphics card recognizes your monitor correctly and if the different possible resolution modes show properly.

You said no other games show this problem. Did you try recently?

You may want to disconnect and reconnect your monitor cable.

There was a workaround with the 59 Hz problem:

1. First of all, set your Desktop resolution to another than the native one of your monitor. For example 1440 x 900. Then set it manually to 60 Hz. Make sure, it is 60 Hz now.
2. Now set your SH 3 resolution in the DX9HiResFix (http://www.lsh3.com/v5/tools_en.html) to the native monitor settings, that would be 1920 x 1200 in your case.
3. If you don't run a DX9HiResFix (http://www.lsh3.com/v5/tools_en.html) mod, leave 2. out. But you could use the DX9HiResFix (http://www.lsh3.com/v5/tools_en.html) and even set it to 1024 x 768. That could help running the game in your case.
However, the game should start now with 1024 x 768...
4. Run the game.

This 59 Hz issue has sometimes been reported with NVidia cards. I have reproduced it myself with a 9800 GT...

Thanks, I need it for Photoshop; my living.
Strangely I'm not given the option of 59 or 60 Hz only 75. So I reconnected my monitor cable and I went into 'advanced settings' and 'listed all modes' I could select 1024x768 60Hz as my highest playable setting, yes playable at more than 800x600. By the way reconnecting the cable now gives me the two monitor options 59 and 60 at my native resolution; 1920x1200
Yes I had re-sized the images above to forum guide lines but have made a cropped composite below without re-sizing.

http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/5139/38451680.jpg

As you can see there is no real difference its as if the 800x600 setting made to my card before the game is improved in game. I note most other screen shots on this site have a similar look to my screen. I would say both settings 800x600 and 1024x768 give the same in game look, a much better look than the desktop screen (yuck) before starting the game. One thing learnt here is I must start SH3 with 60Hz. Note top section of image was SH3 vanilla and bottom is GWX3.
Yes I have a number of other games on my PC all running as they should.
Thanks all for your help

Hey folks,

New to the forum as I've encountered an issue getting SH3 to run on my machine. After installation I'm met with the following error and unsure of the required fix.

You need to remove starforce there is a way and a remover tool here http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55 . Though i hate to say for system stability i would recommend getting a non starforced copy.
Edit: forgot to add after you remove starforce you probably will need to patch the game to 1.4 if you plan on using any of the mods here on subsim. you can find the patch here http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=158

Thanks for that. After running the Starforce removal tool I'm given a dialog box to inform me 'no drivers were found to remove' also when installing the patch it says it can update to v1.3 not v1.4b

This has already been posted in the wrong section (but of course it has), here - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=205498

I used to run SH3 all the time (you might even consider me an olde sea dog) with my now olde WinXP-sp3 machine back about ... oh... 4 years ago... ish.

Since then I've upgraded to a Lenovo IdeaCenter machine (Intel dual-core 2.8GHz, 8 GB ram, on-board graphics @1696MB with 16Gb virtual ram, 500 Gb hard drive, and Windows-7 Home premium 64-bit). Yeah I know, it is a step up, but I still have no dedicated graphics card. BUT, I've played all kinds of graphics-hog games and have had NO Problems, (such as BGO, FarCry 1-2-3, Ghost Recon, etc etc), and even do video editing with this. NO PROBLEMS THERE.

(The following has probably been reposted and rehashed over & over again and again many times un-numberable. I apologize ahead of time.)

So NOW i can't even get SH3 to play. I've read through all the forums I can find, and did all the changes suggested, AND NOTHING WORKS. The game simply will not play. It shows me the loading screen and a red bar, and that's it, then it kicks me out to the desktop. I keep reading that SH3 is the BEST sub sim ever made. And thus, I feel somewhat vaclempt in whether I should go buy a newer version, such as SH-5.

I'm wondering if SH-5 is really worth it, or is it not as good as SH3? Does SH-5 address Win-7 compatibility issues? :hmmm: Any suggestions will be read and considered.

If your machine won't run SH3, you probably shouldn't spend for SH5. I doubt it would run. It's a LOT more graphics intensive than SH3.

Just a thought, did you install SH3 in the default location program files x86? The reason I ask is the Win 7 UAC is very picky about file changes. It is best to install to a location outside of the program files. If you have already installed outside of program files, I'm sorry I wasted your time reading this.

though depending on which mods you get might get the same effect...

I keep reading that SH3 is the BEST sub sim ever made.
You keep reading that from dedicated SH3 players. The two are so completely different that there is no real comparison. On the other hand I still play the twenty-year-old Aces Of The Deep, so what do I know?

I'm wondering if SH-5 is really worth it, or is it not as good as SH3?
It certainly looks a lot better, if that's what floats your boat. For a lot of people that makes all the difference in the world.

You can walk through the entire boat. That's what a lot of players wanted. The downside is that to make that happen they had to limit it to one boat, the Type VII. You do get nice representations of different models of the Type VII, though.

You can have conversations with the crew. Their side of the conversation is extremely limited, and it's only the officers and the cook. The rest of the crew is gone, as in nonexistent. There are guys to look at, but they don't exist in a register or have names. There is nothing to compare with SH3 Commander either.

Does SH-5 address Win-7 compatibility issues? :hmmm:
As far as I know SH5 was designed for Windows 7, so there are no issues.

* UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE *

I GOT IT TO WORK in Win 7. FINALLY !!!
Here's how:

1. Do NOT install the game (yet). If you have installed it, UN-INSTALL the game completely.

2. Download the following files to a TEMP folder or your desktop, so it'll be easier to find them, AND for other reasons later on, such as - C:\TEMP\Downloads\SH3\

A. 1.4b patch - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=158
B. No DVD patch - rld-sh14.rar (http://m0003.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_silent_hunter_3.shtml) - (scroll down to where it says "Silent Hunter 3 v1.4b [ENGLISH] No-DVD/Fixed EXE", click on the floppy disc icon.)
C. SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1092
D. 4GB_Patch_Reloaded - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=2888

3. Unpack, unzip, extract these files ONLY TO a TEMP file, such as - C:\TEMP\Games\SH3, so that you will ONLY need to do a Copy-Paste of the required files just in case there's an install issue.

4. Install SH3. DO NOT install to the default directory C:\programs(x86)\Ubisoft\SilentHunteriii.
For some odd reason, the game crashes if it is installed there. Windoze UAC is a useless "feature" that just treats the user like an idiot leper. Instead, install the game at the ROOT of your hard drive, such as - C:\SH3

5. DO NOT install the game's update system.
Do NOT install the directx version that came with the disk.
Do NOT attempt playing the game.
Don't argue with me. Shut-up & do what you're told.
** If, by chance you have an older version of the game that includes Starforce, you will need to download the following file (to a TEMP directory) - http://onlinesecurity-on.com/downloads/sfcdrvrem.zip -
and install it to remove the insulting BS the game came with.

6. Install the 1.4b patch (exe). Make sure you install the correct patch - for US DVD's use the US DVD patch. Do NOT use the european patch for the US DVD. The same for the EU DVD, use the EU patch.

7. Install the "No DVD Patch" by doing a Copy-Paste from the temp folder to the game folder C:\SH3\. This will replace the following 5 files: sh3.exe, MissionEngine.dll, SimData.dll, StateMachine.dll, Utils.dll

8. Install the "SH3_XPSP2_Res_Fix_for_1.4b" by doing a Copy-Paste from the temp folder to the game folder C:\SH3\. This will add the following 5 files: d3d9.cfg, d3d9.dll, SHIII.sdb, SP2 Rez fix.bat, SP2 Rez fix uninstall.bat

9. Install the "4GB_Patch_Reloaded" (exe).

10. Go to the game directory C:\SH3\ (or whatever you called it). Execute the batch file "SP2 Rez fix.bat".

11. Start the game. If it starts and works fully, congrats. don't bother with the next steps.
----------

12. If it refuses to start and/or crashes, then you may need to do a bit of hacking to the "Main.cfg" file such as located here - C:\SH3\data\Cfg\ - Open the file by right-clicking on the file, select "Edit", and it will open in Notepad. In there you need to find the following:

VIDEO
Resolution=1024 x 768
Make sure it has "Resolution=1024 x 768" in there. Save file as "Main.cfg", NOT as a text file. If by chance your 'puter won't let you save it (no worries - just don't close it yet), right-click on the file (using windows explorer), choose "Properties", goto the "Security" tab, and then click the "Edit" button, a pop-up window will open called "Permissions for Main", click on "users" in the security tab, then under "Permissions for Users" click on the check box "Full Control". Click OK, then OK again, THEN save the "Main.cfg" file. Welcome to windoze (what can I say).

13. Next you will need to do a bit more hacking by going to the main game directory, such as C:\SH3\, and right-click on the file "d3d9.cfg" choose edit, and then look for the following:

config
; ResX: Horizontal resolution setting
; ResY: Vertical resolution setting
; useFiltering: Use linear filtering for UI elements
; enableScreenshots: Hook printscreen keypress to save TGA screenshot
resX=1024
resY=768
useFiltering=1
enableScreenshots=1
screenshotPath=.Make sure it has resX=1024, resY=768 . Then save the file as "d3d9.cfg" not as a text file. If it won't let you save it, remember what you did to that other file (in step 12)? Do that.

13. Then start the game AGAIN. It should work. If by chance it STILL doesn't work, then I'm a moron. :know:

Glad to see you had a win hienz!

I had to go through the same process a couple of years ago to get it to run on an old lappy with win7 someone gave me.

I read your post in the 'comments' forum and was about to start sifting through my old posts to see what I did to fix it, when I thought I'd better see if you reposted here first! That just saved me a heap of effort :haha:

Hope you enjoy your old stomping ground; SH3 is definately worth the trouble!

Make sure it has resX=1024, resY=768 . Then save the file as "d3d9.cfg" not as a text file. If it won't let you save it, remember what you did to that other file (in step 12)? Do that.

13. Then start the game AGAIN. It should work. If by chance it STILL doesn't work, then I'm a moron. :know:

I've followed everything in this list precisely and it still will not run on my Windows 7 desktop. Strangely enough, I had it running perfectly on my Windows 7 Laptop with no fuss.
Now, when I run it on my desktop, it plays the two opening movie things, and then, when those are over, a window pops up saying that the program has encountered a problem and will be shut down. It doesn't give me any more information.

I've updated Windows and my graphics card drivers are fully up to date. This is a fresh and fully updated install of Windows 7 and Silent Hunter III is the first game that I'm installing on it. It worked perfectly (without even having to go through the above process) on my Windows 7 laptop. I don't understand the problem here.

*Edit*
Okay. Problem solved. My computer doesn't like either the "4GB Patch Reloaded" or the "Resolution fix" one. One of those two breaks the game on me.

sounds like a 32 bit OS as the problem you described happened to me once. just something you might want to look into even though you solved the problem.
another issue might be firewall/AV software.

YUP! Sorry for me I am on a Vista 32 bit operating system. So enjoying the great mods avail for 3.0 GWX is out of my reach. But playing GWX 3.0 without mods still keeps this old guy alert.

Thx.

I used steam before, but i downloaded the reloaded version.

One question though: I've got a screen resolution of 1680*1050, can i put these resolutions in the main.cfg and the d3d9.cfg files?

Hello!

I'm having some trouble. I've been reading about subs, and I'm dying to play my old SH3 with the Grey Wolves mod.

I have Windows 7 and an old DVD version of SH3.

When I try to run SH3, I always get this message:

"Protection System: Error: This application can be launched with a release version of Miscrosoft [sic] Windows 95 OSR2.1/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/ Server 2003 only."

I have uninstalled and reinstalled at least 4 times now, trying different things to no avail.

I understand the old version has a protection system called "Starforce." However, whenever I run the Starforce removal tool, I get a message saying that no drivers were found.

I tried Heinz1's 13 step process to the letter, twice, and I get the same message about the version of windows.

Any ideas? I know I could just spend $10 on Steam, but, I bought this game already, and I'm a poor man.

(Question: It shouldn't matter that the game isn't in Program Files (x86), when I'm on a 64-bit system, should it?)

Welcome aboard, Meadowfield :salute:

I'd recommend uninstalling what you've already done, clear out any SH3 reference in My Documents folder, and run a registry cleaner (until recently I'd used Piriform's Defraggler, but now I prefer Puran Defrag - both free and easy to use). Now run the StarFarce removal tool (link in Neals thread (below).

Have a read and follow Neal's thread - http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=160118

Important parts are to grab those files via Google, don't install in the default Program Files, or Program Files (x86), and don't run the game until you've transferred those files.

Do report back.

Danke schön, kameraden! :salute: I will try Herr-Berbunch's suggestions.

A few questions:

1. If I have StarForce (I assume I do since I have an old DVD), why doesn't the removal tool detect anything? Will running the registry cleaner fix something that will allow the StarForce removal tool to work correctly?

2. Does my error message suggest that this is a StarForce problem? ("Protection System: Error: This application can be launched with a release version of Miscrosoft [sic] Windows 95 OSR2.1/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/ Server 2003 only.")

3. Lastly, every time I have installed so far, I have left the box "Windows Media 9 Codecs" unchecked. Should I install these, and would this have anything to do with the error message I'm receiving? If I do install them, will that screw up all my more modern games? If so, can I just reinstall a newer driver to counteract the ones from the SHIII installation?

Danke!

HW3

1. If you do not run the game before installing the noDVD files, StarForce is not installed.

2. I do not know

3. It should not hurt anything, it hasn't for me anyway.

Herr-Berbunch
11-21-13, 07:33 PM
1. I don't know, and running a reg cleaner will remove any left-over bits of previous installs that may affecting a clean install - some may be starfarce if it's on there.

2. Yes, I think so. (but could be wrong!)

3. Any media codecs from an eight year-old game, I hope, would be superceded many times over by the time Win 7 was released. Try it, by all means. Definitely don't install Gameshark or whatever it's called. :yeah:

@Jim - I'm surprised, you normally mention reg cleaner first.

And I made a mistake, quite a big one. Forget Defraggler and Puran Defrag - replace with Piriform's CCleaner and Puran Utilities. :/\\!!

Mittelwaechter's post over on the Ubi forum is spot on - http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/356680-SH3-and-Windows-7?p=2102805&viewfull=1#post2102805

Same here. Three years' absence and reloaded SHIII into my Windows 7 1920x1200. No luck. Tried all the fixes. Works on 1027x768 though. Just annoying having to change resolution before playing. Plays OK and have run GWX, LSH, WAC that I downloaded back in the days when I was running XP.

I'm running SHIII 1.4 from a Focus distributor group disk that I bought when last in the UK in 2010 and which doesn't have Starforce in it. I've been thinking about reloading without that windows codecs, though, just to see if that might do the trick.

Hi All,

Just downloaded Silent Hunter III from Steam, then downloaded the Grey Wolves Mod from here:

http://www.thegreywolves.com/

When I went to run the install .exe it said that my version was not compatible as it was already modded! It is a brand new steam install so I am not sure what I can do! What is the problem? Thanks to anyone that answers!

Oh my word, I got the bloody thing to work! with Greywolves and widescreen mods!!! here is what I did:

followed the instructions on this forum page in the first post - http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2881085392/m/7691096797/p/6

EXCEPT, here is the slight changes I made:

1. Uninstall SH3 if installed already
2. Run SFRemove
3. Reboot
4. Begin installation of SH3 as normal
***change setup.exe properties to Run as Administrator and change for all users. Afer that, Click Troubleshoot Compatibility and click Run with Recommended Settings (WinXP SP2). Now run setup.
***I also changed the installation directory to C:\games\ubisoft\silent hunter III\

5. When you get to Game Shadow cancel install
6. When you get to finish screen DO NOT press Finish. This IS crucial!
7. Install the 1.4 EU DVD patch with Run As Admin
****The EU Patch would not recognize my version, so I used the U.S. Patch. Again, I set it to run as administrator for all users and ran it under recommended compatibility mode.

8. ONLY after Patch has completed hit finish and the launcher screen runs to check system spec and reboot message appears. DO NOT reboot.
***No reboot message showed up for me.
9. Exit spec check. DO NOT choose Launch.
10. Overwrite the files with the NO DVD rld-sh14.rar
11. Run the game. Should now work.

I have no clue how or why this works, but after a few hours of troubleshooting and whining, I'm just happy it does. I did not buy a new copy, but installed from an old DVD with Starforce on it, but of course I didn't launch the game with the DVD so it never installed it. I don't have to change any video settings to make SH3 run, this was all I did, and I can install any mods via JSGME so far including GWX3 and Widescreen fix. I'm running it on a widescreen 18" with 1366x768 native resolution. ha, I was almost going to break down and buy Silent Hunter 5 to make me feel better, but now that SH3 is up and running Ubisoft isn't getting any more of my money.

THANK YOU!!

This worked for me. It runs after you set your desktop resolution to 1024x768, then once you're in the program, just go to graphics setting and set windowed mode. I've started and closed the program multiple times and it runs in a little box perfectly!

Now I just need to figure out how to run it in full screen with my native resolution(1900x1200)

Update: I just wanted to let you guys know that SH3 wants the game to be played in a 4:3 ratio. You don't have to put your desktop at 1024x768, it can be any resolution that is 4:3. If you put it into any other ratio you will get the 'Cannot initialize 3D engine' error. Here are a list of resolutions you can play in:

640x480-----4:3
800x600-----4:3
1024x768-----4:3
1152x864-----4:3
1280x960-----4:3
1400x1050-----4:3
1600x1200-----4:3
2048x1536-----4:3
3200x2400-----4:3
4000x3000-----4:3
6400x4800-----4:3

i got the steam version of SH3 with GWX3. Problem is that I've to set my resolution on desktop everytime to 1024x768 to force the game to start.

I was trying the "Silent Hunter Resolution Fix 1.4b" fix (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=file&id=1092) but it didnt work out for me. Is this fix even working with WiN7 64 Home Premium?

check your permissions in the steam folder (i find that is often the cause)
as for resolution you will need one of the resolution "mods"

One thing I have noticed is that certain Mods seem not to work with 7. For example, water streams and exhaust. I'm not convinced that I'm not doing something wrong, but it may be the case.

I should add that as long as my native resolution is indeed 1024x786 the game starts and also works with the "Silent Hunter Resolution Fix 1.4b" fix.
But the fix apparently only changes the resolution ingame, means i still have to start from a 1024x786 desktop and messed up shortcuts...

I doubt that everyone starting the game with a native resolution of 1024x786, maybe it's only a problem for steam users...

UPDATE:
It's working now the way I want it to. One random mod must have fixed the issue for me I guess....

I'm having similar problems to the people above. Just installed SHIII on my computer which is running Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit). The native resolution of my monitor is 1900x1200 at 60 Hertz. The game will run if I switch to 1024x768, but I prefer to run at my native resolution. Any solution to this problem?

Been reading the threads and it helps alot! Thanks

Although SH3 runs fine in higher resolutions like 1920x1080, for some people (including me) the game only starts when desktop resolution is 1024x768.

I have a simple workaround for that:
Get qres from here. (http://www.home.no/aksoftware/products/QRes.zip)
Qres can change resolution, color depth etc. from command line.

Create a batch file which change desktop reslolution to 1024x768 before running the game and changes back after you exit game.
My file (sh3.bat) contains this:

qres.exe /x:1024 /y:768 /c:32 /r:60
sh3.exe
qres.exe /x:1920 /y:1080 /c:32 /r:60

Edit parameters in the third line according to your desktop resolution.

Good hunting.

Mods please remove my post in the General area.

Okay, I have Win 7 64-bit. I have installed a clean install of SH3 and also installed the 1.4b patch. I downloaded the StarForce removal tool and it says StarForce isn't on my comp. No idea if that is true or not. At any rate, I get this message:

"Error - This application can be launched with a release version of Microsoft Windows 95/OSR2.1/98/ME/NT 4.0/2000/XP/Server 2003 only."

I tried changing the resolution, but that does nothing. I get the same message. I tried changing to EVERY Windopws compatibility setting but it isn't fooling the error message. Same thing comes up. I even installed Direct X 9 thinking maybe something was missing from there. No help.

So what is the magic that has to be done to get SH3 to run on Win 7 64-bit. Or is it not ever gonna happen? :wah:

Apologies if this has already been asked or answered, but I haven't found anything on it.

I've gotten the steam version of SH3 and installed the GWX mod, and I've been confronted with a problem: my left mouse button doesn't seem to work very often in-game. It seems like it gets worse the longer the game is up, and last time I nearly couldn't exit because it would not register my clicks. Also, it would then not stop clicking once I exited the game, and I had to force log off just to get it to stop left mouse clicking.

I know this seems really weird, but does anybody have any ideas of what this could be?

scott_c2911
06-12-14, 05:03 AM
If its happening out of the game too its a faulty mouse. The button is sticking. Try a different mouse. If you use a wireless mouse then try changing the battery. Apart from that I would reinstall the mouse driver if its not plug n play. I dont have any other explanation for it maybe someone else can add to that

Cobalt09
06-12-14, 03:25 PM
Oddly enough, I found my answer. Apparently windows automatic updates was bugging my computer just too much and told my mouse to stop working because it wanted to update. I guess the computer fought back, but windows decided enough was enough and made me get sick of the rampant clicking errors. So, I restarted it and all was fine. First time I've had it happen, but it's all been smooth sailing since.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. All this time I've been looking for something to blame, and since the updates were bothering me, and the subsequent shut down fixed it, I thought it was fixed. However, I was massively wrong, and earlier it dawned on me that some time ago I downloaded an autoclicker, which happened to have a hotkey of F9. When I went to hit F9 in a search for different things, it would activate the autoclicker and drive me nuts. Whoops, it seems like the fact that we all make mistakes is too true here.

I've searched a number of sources and have yet to find anyone describe this problem. I have SH3 purchased off Steam and have added no mods. When I run the game everything is fine until you start a campaign or mission. You can even choose your crew and boat modifications in a campaign. You go to the control room screen and everything is still rosy. However, as soon as you go to the bridge or periscope the graphics become extremely blurry and remain that way throughout any other screen. I'm running Win7 64 Home premium with Athlon II X4 645 3.1 GHz, 4 GB RAM,NVIDIA GeForce 6150 SE / nForce 430. I know the graphics on this aren't great but they run many far more recent games without a problem. I've made sure desktop resolution is set to the games max and I am running in XP compatibility mode.

* UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE ** UPDATE *

Make sure it has resX=1024, resY=768 . Then save the file as "d3d9.cfg" not as a text file. If it won't let you save it, remember what you did to that other file (in step 12)? Do that.

13. Then start the game AGAIN. It should work. If by chance it STILL doesn't work, then I'm a moron. :know:

Thanks again Hienz for the tips!

This morning I got SH III working on my netpc (Packard Bell Imax Mini 3600 Atom@1,6 - ION - W7) in a vanilla 1.4b flanked with a GWX 3.0 with full screen vision on my 28" video (is the standard 1024x768 resolution but at least I got it in full screen instead of a black barred one)

At first the game don't run the 3d engine , so I had to switch monitor rex to 1600x1200 because the game need a 4:3 screen resolution to initialize the 3d.

After the game load the intros and the loading screen but after loading stops to work....

....every settings of compatibility and resolution don't solve the CTD....

So I let the XP sp2 compatibility and administrator privilege but enabled to all users the full control (in the advanced settings) and the game start to run flawless!

Now I'm enjoying SHIII+GWX 3.0 in my 28" screen!

I must to understand how add SHC 3.2 and the game is done!

I installed SH4, pacific, golden on my Windows 7.

I set the graphics, etc. and all works.

Well, except for one small thing. If I change the game setting realism, and save it. The next time I start the game it has been reset to the original low setting.

I switched this to XP compatible and still the same problem.

I can play the game.... I just have to use it in the easy low realizes.

Any thoughts?

I changed the permission properties, and I changed it for all files in the SH4 folder. Still did not do what I wanted.

Perhaps, I am missing something. I want to set some of the realism switches on and then run a career. I choose easy because I am just starting out...

So, does the difficulty setting override and rewrite my game settings? I have tried setting to difficult etc but it continues to play and show afterwards as a very low easy level.

However, if I go into the game settings, apply the changes, and then exit to windows. Go back in and look at the settings they are still as I had set them. Only after I have run a mission does the game settings reset to all off.

Ubisoft support told me the problem was that I am running on Windows 7 and suggest I should be in Vista.... never in a million years will I run Vista.

I haven't this situation in my rig....if I change difficulty settings the game keep the new values....

Try to check if the SH3 DATA folder allow to modify the files....

Otherwise I can only suggest to try look at the installing guide quoted above and try to reinstall the game....I do as it until point 7 but I don't install the 4gb patch and the HiRes fix....

I suggest you to start campaign only when the game is working flawless....

KeithDo you realize that you posted in the wrong section? This is the SH3 section. SH4 is a few sub-forums higher in the list. The game structure is mostly similar. But it's better to keep things organised in here.

Did you run the game as an administrator account the first time (perhaps directly after installing), and after that as a different account? Or vice versa. That could explain why the settings did not stick. It was using the configuration settings in the SH4 folder of a different user Documents folder, which did not contain the altered settings yet.

No, I did not notice. Sorry.

Yes, I did all of that. So, I took my time and ran a test.

As a Bilge Rat, I am in the SH3 area, but... if there are any in my position attempting to run SH4 in Windows System 7 Home Edition, here is what was discovered:

Go to: Options
GAMEPLAY SETTINGS
Change to "High", realism 73
uncheck Manuel Targeting System, realism 58
Apply ChangesAre you sure? Yes
Back

Start: American Career

The difficulty setting will change the Gameplay settings as follows:
Easy -------> Low
Normal -----> Medium
Hard -------> High
Very Hard --> Realistic

Otherwise, the Gameplay Settings are remembered and used as you set them for the other types of play.

Thank-you all.

Hi all...

I'm playing SH3 on Windows 7 64Bit. I got it from Steam about 4 years ago.

I'm playing it pretty much clean, no mods installed etc., apart from SH3 Commander, though if I'm correct that's not really a Mod of the game itself, it's more some added features before the game starts.

Anyhow, it's working perfectly but I'm playing it in 1024x768. I can't get it to play any higher than that. No errors, but it's always 1024x768 no matter what I try. My monitor is 1600x1200 native. I've tried editing the setting in the main.cfg file, and I tried downloading the High Res fix (the one with the 9d3d.cfg file) but still just 1024x768.

Any ideas how to get a higher res?

Thanks...

J.

Ok, some more details about my problem...

I've read all 30 pages of this thread, and tried most of the suggestions.

To recap, I'm running SH3 that I got from Steam about 3 or 4 years ago. It's 1.4b with no Mods at all (apart from SH3 Commander, but I had the same issue before I installed that).

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit with 6GB of RAM and an ATI Radeon HD4850 (512MB) Graphics Card.

Basically, I can't get SH3 to not run in 1024x768. My monitor's default resolution is 1600x1200, so I don't even have to worry about Widescreen issues, as it's 4x3.

After reading lots of answers on here, I decided to do things 'properly'. I downloaded and installed JSGME. I then used it to install the 4GB patch and the DX9HiResFix patch and they're all enabled via JSGME. In fact, when I enabled the DX9HiResFix patch, it detected another one (_DX9HiResFix) so I tried enabling that as well.

I also tried things like running the SH3.exe executable in 'Windows XP SP3 Compatibility' mode.

But no matter what I do, the resolution isn't changing when I'm in the game. After each change I've made, I've run the game and started a new single mission, but the screen always looks the same.

Any ideas what else I can try? One thing did occur to me, maybe, just maybe, I'm already at a higher resolution without realising it, and have been all along. So I took a pic of the monitor during the game, maybe someone could let me know if they think I'm in 1024x768 or not. It looks different to some of the screenshots I've seen on here, but with so many mods out there, it's possible that's the difference? It's a 20 inch screen.

Thanks...

J.

I followed heinz's instructions to the letter, and when I clicked on the SHIII icon nothing happens (no error message or anything, it's like the icon doesn't even work). Went through like you said and gave it all of the permissions for all users, still nothing. I'm not sure what could be wrong...

I mean to:

Right click on the game icon over the desktop , open the property window and then the security label , you'll find all your rig users; when you select one below is shown it's level of authorization....enable all users to full controls....

Hope this'll help you....

Try to uninstall the game , delete all folders left from uninstalling , reboot the rig and reinstall the game checking all Heinz passage one by one....

Yeah, I did it to the letter. I had heard that guys were able to get the Steam version going, so I bought it on Steam and it doesn't work either. BUT, I get a different issue with the Steam one, it says it cannot initialize the 3D engine, and I think that's something I can work with (I think people have fixed that one). I will see if I can get the Steam one to work first...

The 3d engine not initialized can be due the monitor resolution not set to a 4:3 resolution....try to set res to a valid 4:3 value....

Thanks, walter! I changed it to 1024x768, the game started, then I alt+Tab'ed and put the desktop rez back to 1920x1080, then went back into the game, saved the settings, then restarted the game! Perfect!

Thanks!

After changing my resolution to something 4:3ish, I was able to launch the game. Great. However, I then grabbed an apparent hi-res mod (that allows you to change the resolution) and tried it various ways. First just enabling it manually, then using a mod app. What happens is the executable launches, then sits in memory and dumps after a few seconds. The game never goes beyond that. When I enabled a splash screen mod, it went to the screen, then dumped out. I've tried any number of things without success. Now, I suppose I could deal with it and play in low-res... but I want to see if anyone has found a workaround to this problem. Thanks P.S. Windows 7 AMD CPU NVIDIA 560TI 16:10 monitor Also, I used to be pretty active in this game back in the day. Probably put in a thousand hours. Picked it up on sale on Steam thinking I'd be able to jump right back in... oh boy.

Just wanted to mention a solution to a problem I was having that I imagine some other folks might run into (if it's already been covered, my apologies!)

I was having some problems starting SH3 for Steam recently. The game would immediately crash on startup with no error reported. Loading the EXE file directly gave me an error prompt that read "The procedure entry point direct3dcreate9ex could not be located in the dynamic link library d3d9.dll"

This is apparently a common error for games that don't like you to have nVidia Experience installed. Since I had absolutely no use for it, I uninstalled it, and it now works just fine. :woot:

There are still a few left floating around. The download is the cheapest. If you do buy it from Amazon, go there through the link in my sig and SubSim will get a small portion of the take, at no extra cost to you.
