Some WW2 Aviation Research Help

Hi guys,

My uncle has given me & my dad a 1:24 MkVb Spitfire to build for him.

If anyone has any, could you please forward to me any useful photos, information or diagrams that will help me build this model accurately. Airfix sometimes don't get the colours accurate on certain things, or miss out small intricate things.

Here's a pretty good reference for the colourschemes. The paints should be easy to find with the names used in the pics.

A funny side-note about the colour chart Dowly posted: The underside colour is listed as Duck Egg Blue (Sky Type "S"). Some sources claim these were different colours, with 'Sky' being greener. To confuse matters, there is also sometimes listed a 'Duck Egg Green'. Almost certainly these were names given to different batches of the same paint, with some variations in tone.

But more fun is the 'Sky Type "S"' reference. All British aircraft colours were officially listed as "Type S". Why only 'Sky' had the suffix tacked on in unofficial use is a mystery I've never found the answer to.

Yes, didnt notice it when posted. AFAIK, the normal lower surface paint was 'Sky' or Sky Type 'S' (used from 1940 until the 60's IIRC), if I'm not mistaken, Duck Egg Blue and Green are different colors. Sky being kinda mix of the two.

Oh certainly.

I only recently completed a Revell 1:72 VIIC and was really pleased with the results, a great learning experience with the ol' glue. It's suprising to see how little you have to apply for it to work.

I'm planning on weathering this Spit, with exhaust fumes and the black marks left by machine gun fire. I'm also considering ways of implementing bullet holes. Any ideas?

Only issue is, I have to give the end product away :cry:
