I just saw this episode of the twilight zone. Yes, it was on late lastnight. Anyway....It involved a U-Boat using it's deck gun to sink a ship.
My question is that it showed the gun crew going down ropes from the top of the tower to the deck below.
I always thought they had a hatch to get to the deck gun quickly? I know that the show may not be pin-point perfect, but was this done in real llife? And if so which type sub could it have been?
It was set in '42.
Good story, made me think twice about sinking a passenger/cargo today.

There were rungs on the conning tower, so ropes wouldn't be needed. Seems like ropes would make you pretty vulnerable to small arms gunfire where as using the rungs would be quicker. Must movies and films about U-Boats prior to Das Boot had a lot of screwy detail. The Enemy Below in particular. I don't think the deck hatches on a U-Boat were meant to be used outside of port given a U-Boat's low freeboard.

This must have been the "Judgment Night" Twilight Zone episode with Nehemiah Persoff. ;)

Good question but I have no answer. Maybe Jimbuna knows?

AAAAAGGGGHHHHH.........Sorry I did not post earlier, I have been busy being questioned by DGS ( Das Spelling Gestapo). Sorry guys, but I had to drop some names.

I kind of figured that they would not have used ropes, but did not know that they did not use the hatches at sea. Thanks.

NEXT QUESTION:
Has any one ever ran into the S.S. Queen of Glascow? Could it be one of the Ghost ships? If not, it would be cool if it was...Hint, coughf, hint.

Thanks again guys.
