I've got my SHIII+GWX3+OLC+MoBo set running again! Werner Weyprecht is ressuscitatet and lurking again!
All right, my first war partol wasn't that glorious in fact... After the first peacetime tour which made me discover that now I have to actually sail back home after a patrol (I once got my captain 'Gefallen' in August '39 - what a moron!) I went through the Channel and waited the beginning of the war. About 23 00, September 2nd '39 U34 spotted a Passenger Cargo entering the Channel on a ESE course. I shadowed him till after midnight, then opened fire with my gun. That could have been the very first sinking of the war! After som time I decided to venture futther into the channel. This could have been the stupidest death of the war: A Krigsschiff spotted, I dive to a safety depth and reduce speed thinking this would be enough to avoid an armed trawler. A little later the sonar reports a cargo, closing. I set to the interception course and order PD, confident since my operator couldn't hear the warship any more. The scope pops up... Verdammt! A flash and a roar of a close explosion, I'm beind depth charged on PD! Down we go, Schleichfahrt, but the Channel is so shallow... Thankfully the Brit was as dumb as I and I shook him off quite easily. Direction deep Atlantic anyway. But when the warship's noise fainted the cargo was still there. Periscope check, surface, I'd get him anyway! The cargo is spotted about 16 00 and ith only a Mediun Cargo. I'd keep my torpedos. But since British patrols may roam I decide to wait till dark and shadow him at 8000m of distance till about 22 00. Then I show my dumbness again.
I nearly begun my attack when the watch reports another ship. I check - it's just a coal barge. So I simply order Ahead 2/3 to close up and man the deck gun. What the heck, the cargo is zig-zagging? He spotted me? Well, he had to since those morons were shooting at the barge which I didn't notice because of the TC! Thank God we're in '39! I sunk that cargoanyway and head to BF16 square for a last tour before the journey home, I'm about 50% of fuel and plan to cath some Brits in the North Sea.
Ship spotted! And this time, it's a 10k Large Crgo, I want him! Interception course, situation plotted in MoBo, but I'm nervous, I'm a few minutes for 7AM and it's much too bright for a surface attach, and I don't trust my estimations through periscope (the sea is rough and I have to re-train in using OLC's interface). In five minutes the distance drops from 8 to 5 thousand metres, it's definitely time to dive. With only two marks I calculate his speed (seems quite likely though) and coure, I turn for a 90° shot, AOB set in the TDC... He's close but I'm doing something wrong and can't get a range estiation. Never mind, I trust my previous calculations (the cargo isn't zig-zagging) so I launch two eels just a little too late. I lower the scope and turn to a parallel couse. But then, a hit! New check: the ship seems stopped and it's leaning to starboard. I turn toward him. It's really close by now and his speed must be 1-2kts at most, I simply aim a torpedo to fis bow mast and score a killer hit midship. That's it, he's going down. Now I can start withdrawing round the Isles, with 17k on my score and 11 eels on bard
Definitely, I'm not the best of all Kaleuns but it's damn' good to be back down there!
