Sandbox style RPG.

Not really in to RPG's/MMORPG's, ie. LOTR, WOW etc.

However I tried the demo of Mount & Blade (http://www.taleworlds.com/index.html from the downloads section) and was pleasantly surprised at how engaging it was.
Doesn't look as graphically polished as LOTR or Age of Conan, but it has a certain charm all of its own.
There's a lively modding community (http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php) and with the addition of the ever useful JSGME I was able to add some new map textures almost immediately.

Ended up buying this one from play.com for 9 quid! bargain-tastic!

I guess it's a bit like Pirates of the Caribbean, but without the ships, and no undead super npc's to kill off your career.

Combat is real time with a simple interface revolving around the mouse. Weapons range from rocks to swords, bows, crossbows, spears, lances etc etc.
It's basically medieval stuff, with no magic or demons and the like. Plenty of trade, looting, slaving, besieging, fighting off bandits, quests for various people. You get to recruit other characters to fight in your band, either for you alone or for a faction you are allied to - these include footmen, archers, cavalry. All characters have a detailed level up/skills and points system, which is fairly intuitive.

Battles can have up to 100 participants per side (though there is a mod to remove this limit) depending on how many troops you are capable of leading.

On the whole it's pretty good fun.

Aye, M&B is a good game, especially since there are a whole bunch of mods available to make the game even more interesting

Been playing this game since the earlier betas and have always thought it was great, better than Oblivion imo. The sheer satisfaction of getting a headshot with a longbow whilst riding a horse into battle! Briliant!

Another player from the Early betas here.

I wonder how the multiplayer will be...

Can't wait until the next TLD release.

I didn't play the beta but I have been playing this since it came out. Ironically I was just looking at mods on mbrepository for the first time in months just before coming to subsim. I am looking forward to multiplayer being added :)

Not the best looking game, but a hell of alot of fun. Kinda like a first-person M:TW in the battle sequences.

Player since mid-to-late beta, taleworlds seemed better when they were independent though, and the expansion is most likely gonna screw the game up.

I tried the demo after reading this thread and liked it, but never bought it. That is until I got it for 5 dollars from D2D.

Its great, I just have a hard time with bandits. Most of my party is usually killed off and it comes down to me slaughtering most of them, but getting captured when there is one or two left. :x

I have a question. I have to collect taxes for one of the Lords. I did so, and when I returned to the Castle the lord wasn't there. The last report I had on him was of him heading towards the castle a day prior. Eight days have passed and there is two other lords inside the Castle, and I still haven't seen the Lord I owe the money too. Should I assume he's dead or captured and use the money for myself or what?

I think you might have to go and search for him - some of them are out and about with their troops fighting and such like. Missing a deadline for a mission never seemed to do me too much harm, though I did get a reputation with an enemy faction for running away! lol everytime I met this one faction in battle I'd get wiped out, so I'd leave a few good men to hold em off so my main contingent and myself could scarpper and regroup. I met another lord allied with the guy I kept retreating from and he knew me as 'the guy who kept running from the field of battle' haha

I enjoyed sacking and raising to the ground the peasant villages of my enemies... murdering everyone in sight and making off with all of their stuff  I tell you, there's a pillaging barbarian thug in all of us, just itching for the opportunity to spill the entrails of some poverty stricken dirt farmers :arrgh!:

Well I ended up deleting that character and starting over. Reading this website helped me out alot; http://www.brighthub.com/video-games/pc/articles/20602.aspx

I'm currently a Sword/shield/spear character.

I have another question though. In my last career I was asked by a Lord to be a Mercenary for his faction. If I become a mercenary am I still able to become a vassal of said faction?
And whats the best way to get a mercenary army?

Have a look at these:

In answer to your question.... probably. I'm a mercenary for a lord; you get to be a vassal by being invited to swear allegiance, say if you've hunted a lot of bandits on his territory or protected caravans or attacked his enemies, I think - you get noticed. After that, you move up the social ladder either by force of arms, or by doing your lords bidding.
I think the only way to get a large army is to have enough experience points in your character sheet to command a larger number of men. Leadership or something it's called iirc.

Where did you buy it from?

Whenever I seem to have a Lord as a prisoner, I can never seem to find a Random broker.

I just went from Mercenary Captain to a vassal.
For those of you new to the game, if you become a Mercenary Captain, make sure to collect you're fee's from the King every so often. I totally forgot I was supposed to get paid, until I ran into the king and noticed one of the options was to collect my wages.

IIRC if you keep him prisoner for a while, you'll get an offer from the faction to release him for a nice sum of money.

That happened for my first prisoner; I was offered 5,000. Which I spent on new armor and a sword.

The second one I was offered 1,500ish, I don't know from who. My third was bought off me for 1,800 from one of our Lords.

I lost my fourth lord because he escaped. :x

I had the King of Swadia or whatever that Kingdom is called for some time. Apparently nobody liked him at home, so he escaped. grrr

Managed only to get ransom for one noble so far. The others all managed to flee.

I hate the ransom quests where they ask you to catch 4 of a certain class so they can exchange them. I typically use blades and my spear so knocking people unconscious is rare.

Unfortunately, none of the ransom guys or the slave traders are buying/paying for nobles. They apparently only take regular folks.

I think you have to tell the Ransom Broker you have the person and then they'll negotiate with the family.

Nope.. the brokers wont take any nobles :shifty: But you can take 'em to one of the other lords of your faction, and they will offer money to take of your hands.

Ah that sucks. If I had known that I wouldn't of gone looking for Brokers.

I need to capture a Castle so I can build a dungeon already.
