I got a screenshot, about 1500m away from a "Armed Trawler" and he cant hear it ! I mean come on, the other day he could not even hear the destroyer running over us and killing him for ******* sake...
Now that i have vented my discomfort.. anyone any idea's ? :salute:
The sonar man can hear ships from max. 20-25km. If he's tired, his efficiency drops. Give your sonar man a "radioman" qualification and some medals. That will improve his performance and his resilience to fatigue.
Also, the hydrophones have a deaf spot at the stern, and at the bow (older model).
For best results, do a soundcheck yourself. :03:

Clear information, just the way i like it :yeah:
Well i am guessing then that he is missing the qualifications and is feeling left behind.. i will give him some credit and see what happens :arrgh!:
p.s. how do i operate the sonar myself, i am doing something wrong.. gosh i wish i hadn't played this for such a long while :P

Is his name Bernard by any chance?
On a serious note, radioman qualification and medals do help, also upgrade your hydrophones as this will help too.

Press the "H" key (or right click on the sonar officer icon, or himself in the radio room). You'll se the hydrophone console (a big round instrument with needle and bearing marks).
There's a button marked as Ambiance volume. Click on the upper part of it to turn the volume up.
By turning the needle you scan in various directions. There are three ways to turn it:
1. drag it around with the mouse
2. click on somewhere in the dial and the needle will turn where you clicked
3. click on the wheel below
You can hear ships more than 30km away. With some practice, you'll recognize warships from merchants, and different types of them.

....and the simplest method of all (provided your using SH3 Commander) would be to select the 'no fatigue' option http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif
