View Full Version : I've Got A Few Questions Regarding Torpedoes
Bent Periscope

1. Normally I creep along in out subs at 2 kts or less when coming near a convoy. The I fire off this torpedo that is doing 30 kts of better. Can't the destroyers hear this? Wouldn't they be able to track this and warn the convoy so some attempt of escape is made?
2. How does a torpedo react if set to magnetic when the shot is nearly at 90 degrees of the ship and I am not attempting a below the keel shot? If the magnetic setting was not in place, then the impact setting should explode the torpedo when it strikes the ship. However, if the magnetic setting is set, would that that when impact the timing of the torpedo's detonation? Would it be a distance away from the ship? Would this cause less damage then the impact setting since it is not below the keel?
3. When I am in base, I can set up my torpedoes as I want them. Can I change the order that the extra internal torpedoes are placed in the tubes or is the placement automatic. I know I can decide the order that the external torps are place in the sub.
4. What is the depth that torpedoes can be fired? Is it dependent on the sub or torpedo? If so can you list out the depths for each. Also, is there anything else I need to take into consideration when firing from deeper then periscope depth?
5. Acoustic Homing Torpedoes - Is there any want to set them so that they run a certain distance before the homing system starts? I'd like to see if I can shot from outside the convoy, from a distance , but have the torpedo run straight to near the center of the convoy with the juicier ships normally sail. The as it gets in there the homing setting can kick in. If not, what do you suggest as a tactic to use the homing torp against the center ships?
Thanks,
BP:salute:

Hello, BP!
My "expertice" allows me to answer only one question tho..
You can uncheck the "auto loading" in the weapons management screen (I) button for a shortcut. That way you can manually drag the torpedo you want to be loaded in to a tube.
Hope that helps :salute:

By the way, do you happen to remember what was the post count to get rid of the "Navy dude"? :hmmm:

Wouldn't they be able to track this and warn the convoy so some attempt of escape is made? In real life, yes. Torpedoes were detected on hydrophones. It was harder to hear the electric motors than the steam powered ones, so the G7e's were generally reserved for convoy attack useage. I don't think this is modelled in SH3, but I may be wrong.
4. What is the depth that torpedoes can be fired? Is it dependent on the sub or torpedo? If so can you list out the depths for each. Also, is there anything else I need to take into consideration when firing from deeper then periscope depth? As in real life, there is a depth at which you can't fire torpedoes. I don't know what the number is exactly, but a little trial and error testing should give you an answer.

Noone can hear your torps being lauched or hear them on their way.IT is not implemented in sh3.
If you shoot a ship from 90 degrees AOB, on magnetic , the impact still works. The torps wont detonate a distace from the ship (they are not that sensible though early in war they (magnetic pistols) can blow prematurely) , they will detonate on impact.
About homing torps, i dont think it is possible to make them travel straith . They go about 300m when they arm and the acoustic homing system begins operating. So there is no need for solution just point and shoot, though hit is not guarnteed.

In my last game i fired a G7a set at 44kts against a Hunt I at night, the destroyer didnt try to dodge it. So i think they are not modelled to hear them, only to see them.

Real Life: As Mookie mentioned, they could be heard. But only if the soundman happened to be listening in that direction at the time.
Game: Don't know.

Real Life: Yes, that was one of the problems. If the torpedo ran too shallow it just might go off before reaching the target. If it went off close enough, though, the result could be the same anyway - the concussion would still make a nice hole.
Game: Don't know.

It works that way in SH4 - don't remember from SH3. Try it once and let us know what happens.
4. What is the depth that torpedoes can be fired? Is it dependent on the sub or torpedo? If so can you list out the depths for each. Also, is there anything else I need to take into consideration when firing from deeper then periscope depth?
The deepest the doors can be opened is 25 meters. If you open them at periscope depth and then dive they'll stay that way. In fact if you try to close them you'll be told "Cannot open torpedo doors at this depth!" Don't know if they'll fire, though. Since I can't see anything down there I've never tried.
5. Acoustic Homing Torpedoes - Is there any want to set them so that they run a certain distance before the homing system starts? Sorry I can't answer that one as I've never gotten that far in the war.:dead:

Of course the answer was in front of me all along.

It will first change at 179 but you'll be in for a real surprise.
Then you become the Planesman at 180.

I known that depending on depth, the sub can open its tubes. When I am below that level, it won't let me open. I think I read somewhere that it was 25 meters for most boats and 50 meters for the XXI. I'll have to test it. I guess the depth does not matter to the torpedo.

If my torpedo is not a G7e, what would cause the detonation? I know that the earlier electronic torps had issues.
Also, if the water is choppy, can this set off a magnetic torp that porpoises? What about a Impact-only torp that porpoises?
Also, I can't believe that you've never made it that far. I haven't either but I'm try out a mod that has given me access to homing torps.
Thanks,
BP

The Wren's were made for defense against destroyers, so I don't think there's a setting to have the homing mechanism delayed until it reaches the center of a convoy. I generally load one in my aft tubes in case of emergency.
