hi,
it happened that, intercepting a convoy on a clear calm night (1940), the watchman has spotted the convoy from over 12000 mt :o , and the leading destroyer has spotted my just surfacing attack periscope (all stopped) from about a kilometer :o (this doesn't seem to match that the sub may approach emerged less than a km away a cargo ship at night, remaining undetected, isn't it?)

that's the way it was or ....?

thanks

Sometimes, **** happens. Try not to be overconfident next time and dont fully rise the periscope, do a little pick-a-boo with it and let the sonarman keep you informed about enemy position.

Sometimes the smallest thing gets spotted, other times you get lucky. I was cruising along trying to get to a reported contact the other night, decks awash, I got up to make a cuppa tea and neglected to pause the game. When I came back I nearly filled me pants as there was a destroyer about 800 yards off my starboard side! I dove, knocked down my speed and went to silent running, then watched the destroyers course, it never changed! The swine hadn't seen me at all! So I snuck out of the area and counted my blessings.

You can see ships from 16km, even at night.

How do you know they spotted your periscope? Like it was said above, s**t happens :DL, but I don't think that was the case. It's more likely that the escort changed course during his regular sweep, came too close to you and detected you with hydrophones.

During the night you are almost invisible. I did a little test: I passed 500m from the Hunt I destroyer, in oposite courses (ahead slow). Then I increased speed to ahead flank, turned after the destroyer, followed it and overtook it, almost touching it. They never knew I was there. It was May 40.

I've thought about being spotted for the periscope because there was no other factor accounting for ownship detection: periscope depth, engine stopped (thence enemy hydrophones should have been silent), about 1000mt 20° AOB, 5am: the destroyer at that distance suddenly turned on the lights (but why?, it's not that I went with active sonar pinging :) , ... I swear ...gramophone was off), shot a flare in the sky and charged at me full speed

maybe I agree with th **** happens option :03: :

BTW were they asleep on the destroyer you chased ? :D
are we playing the same GWX SH3 and the same settings? (provided it may be of relevance)

Don't know, mate, but I can tell you they awoke when I started to fire at them from point-blank range. I was sunk within a few minutes. (before you start to think I'm crazy :D, I would like to say that it was a custom made single mission, not during the career. If you like to mess around with it, I can upload it for you)

Yes, GWX3, almost 100% realism (except for external camera, obviously).

thanks meduza for the offer, at this time I like to stick with campaign and try to get to 1945 in one piece (maybe succeeding in smashing one of those nasty british destroyers along the way)
