View Full Version : Double install SH3?
Hello Kaleun's!
Can somebody help me with this question?
1) I have installed SH3 + GWX 3.0 + SH3 Commander. All works perfect!
2) I want to install SH3 again, to try it with LSH3 v4. So that I am able to see how LSH3 is. But don't want to loose my SH3 + GWX 3.0 installation!
When I try to install it again, Windows XP (SH3 DVD) gives me three options?
A. Change the program.
B. Repair the installation.
C. Delete (remove) SH3 from my computer.
I bought the DVD at amazon.com, two month's ago, the latest patch is installed on the DVD and it is not necessary to leave the SH3 DVD in the computer. I don't have any crack NoCD. It's not needed and I don't have a serial number too?
The DVD is original, but how can I install it twice on one computer?
Thanks! :salute:

I'll point you to a post by the ever-knowledgeable and all around good guy TarJak that should answer your question: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=716838&postcount=3
EDIT: Err...that answer requires an install of the program "Multi SH3" which I can't find a working link to at the moment. Hopefully someone will come along with one...

Found it in old SHIII mods thread http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=141242
It will be under Utilities.
Sorry guys, but I don't understand how it is explained? :wah:
I am an 'Apple' man and I don't understand that you are able to rename the program files folder? Because in that case nothing will work anymore.
I cannot find MultiSH3, but I have seen MultiSH4 on this website.
In Google I cannot find a donwload link for MultiSH3 ... is the only option to delete (remove) my SH3 + GWX 3.0 and go for a fresh install ... to try LSH3 v4.
Or is it enough to remove (if possible) via SH3 Commander only GWX 3.0 and install with SH3 Commander LSH3 v4? Thus leave the original SH3 installation?
Thanks again!
Hi Kommandant. I have 4 installations of SH III.

Thanks again! You shouldn't rename "c:\Program Files" to something else, if that is what you mean. You should FIRST copy the folder that IS the (still virgin) SH3 folder. Paste it onto the drive, and rename that pasted folder.
For those reading this that do run Vista do not install it in the 'Program Files' folder. It hates when the user makes changes/moves files there. Unless you like to acknowledge User Account Control over and over. Older Windows OSses like XP do not mind it (or maybe that is because they have administrator privaleges by default), but I'm sure future windows versionswill threat the Program Files folder with the same vigilance.

Thanks for your answer. You are also from The Netherlands, so I suppose you speak and write Dutch too?
My son is on vacation, I will ask him to do it. That was indeed what I meant ... to rename C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII but that would be incorrect.
I still don't understand how to do it myself (me dummy), I have now MultiSH3 and wait for my son.
"You should FIRST copy the folder that IS the (still virgin) SH3 folder." ???
Still virgin?
Anyway ... thanks ;)

Yes. Just right click the original folder (Ubisoft) and "COPY" it. Then "PASTE" it into another folder for instance...
Heres the original... ( C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII ) and here would be your second install ( C:\ProgramFiles\GWXUbisoft\SilentHunterIII )
That simple.

Double hard drives and the problem is solved! :haha:

Thanks. Simple ... :hmmm:
Step 1:
Copy and paste Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII. (Let's say in My Documents folder).
Step 2:
Delete the original Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII in C:\ProgramFiles\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII (So I don't uninstall the game).
Step 3:
Put the DVD in the player and install the game (path) e.g.:
C:\ProgramFiles\GWXUbisoft\SilentHunterIII
Is the above the correct way?
:)

Anyway ... thanks ;)Inderdaad, nederlands is mijn moedertaal, dus als je de nederlandse versie van het onderstaande wil (of gewoon meer uitleg) moet je me even een prive bericht sturen. :)

Ok, back to English now.
Virgin is meant to be: installed, patched, but not modded! (ff weer in het nederlands: 'still virgin'='nog maagd' ;) )
But since you allready have GWX3, and most likely played with it is far from being 'untouched'. I don't know what LSh3 is or how it needs to be installed. But I presume it doesn't go on top of GWX3. And that makes your situation difficult. But that much you knew allready.
All of our responses you got sofar expect there isn't ANY Sh3 installed on your system from the beginning. (or what was there is thuroughly un-installed/removed) So no wonder we are of no help. We are giving the wrong solution to the problem. GWX 3 must remain on your system.
I must admit I have never tried to install multiple Sh3 versions, so what MultiSh3 does exactly is a mistery. So please take the below with a big grain of salt.
A solution is perhaps to:
- temporily back-up (only the Patrol folder in 'My Documents' and the MODS folder is important I think, someone correct me if I'm wrong),
- then uninstall (to keep the Windows Registry clean) and remove what files and folders are left, (like it is advised in the GWX manual)
- reinstall and copy according to the procedures mentioned earlier using MultiSh3,
- then mod one copy back upto GWX 3 standards (identical to what you had before) as if nothing happend by adding back the mods you had in the MODS folder,
- then overwriting the Sh3 in 'MyDocuments' with the backed up profiles/savegames, setup Sh3 Commander again and go play GWX.
- with the other copy of the new SH3 folder install LSH3 as is needed (after 'switching over' with MultiSh3).
But I don't know exactly if that is possible without the risk of breaking some things. As said before, I need confirmation by others if I'm right.
Aside from that I initially thought you wanted to change the "C:\Program Files" folder into something like "C:\Renamed Program Files". That would really screw up your system, as other programs (virusscanner, MS Office or whatever you have installed) that are in there would also be unaccesible. A big NO-NO!. If you just wanted to rename that Sh3 folder that is inside the 'C:\Program Files\Ubisoft' folder then I see no problem in that. It temporarily disassociates (nl: 'ont-verenigd' is de juiste vertaling hoop ik) the Sh3 folder from the installation settings in Windows. Windows simply can't find it anymore, but the files are still there. It's temporarily since you can rename it back to what it was. Windows wouldn't have noticed a thing. But I see also not much use in that, since you need a Sh3 folder that doesn't have GWX in it. It works as a way to make a huge back up of everything, except that the folder in "My Documents" also needs to be saved backed up. And whatever settings are stored in the SH3Commander folder too.
I'm sorry I don't have a simple answer to your problem. Your requirement wanting to keep the current Sh3 folder intact or atleast functional makes it very difficult in my view.

I have sent you a private message. I thank you for your 'complicated :DL' explanation!
Take care :salute:
Edit: Added image why I want to install LSH3 too.
