I'll be continuing the Germany campaign I posted some pics of in the Screenshot thread, figured it was better to make an AAR thread.

Some notable events so far:

1839 - Prussia overthrows the monarchy and becomes a democracy, the German states are plunged into the first unification war.

1847 - After 3 wars, the last of the German monarchies fall.

Germany is formed by popular unification as a democracy under Prussia.

The Austrian Empire collapses. The Balkans and Italian parts claim independence while the formerly tiny Hungarian Prussian-puppet state is granted much of the former empire's territory (But still remains Germany's ally). Germany annexes Austria and Bohemia.

France invades Germany for the first time.

1853 - The Crimean War, Germany invades the Russian Empire in Poland. No territorial changes, but Russian military power is severely weakened.

1862-1864 - European intervention in the Mexican succession crisis puts Germany and France at war. The war claims over a million lives, at the end of which Germany annexes most of Lorraine-Alsace.

1864-1869 - Major economic crisis in Germany following the war, national income is down to a sixth, Liberal revolutions are brought down by force. The Netherlands are annexed by Germany (1869). The Freisinnige Party's victory in the 1869 election restores the economy to what it was in 1862.

1870

WAR!

February, 1870 - France, perhaps looking to restoring it's former glory and territory, declares war as soon as the peace treaty expires.

Germany doctrine draws heavily on the lessons of the previous war; Artillery is issued to 25 fresh divisions. Doctrine now dictates that no attack will be conducted at less than 2:1 odds unless absolutely necessary, no attacks or movements will be conducted if they create gaps in the front, fortification lines (Though none are apparently present, perhaps they didn't have enough time or resources to put them up again) will never be attacked without artillery with odds of at least 3:1.

German strategy once again calls for the annihilation of enemy forces and a march on Paris, which will proceed carefully in case of sudden deployment of French reserves.

In order to avoid another economic crisis, German leadership decides not to mobilize the reserves unless the situation becomes desperate.

Épinal, which has been deliberately left out of the negotiations in the last war because it lengthens the line too much, is encircled and crushed in the first moves of the war. 8 French divisions surrender.

http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/8941/victoria200906252102460.png

The German army (With the help of some Hungarian expeditionary forces) advances south as far as possible without creating any possible weak points in the line and in the north as far as Cambrai and Amiens.

In South America, a single division invades the formerly Dutch colony in Guyana from French Guyana, 2 divisions (Already present in the area to crush a revolt in the West Indies) under August Karl von Goeben are landed in French Guyana and quickly occupy it.

22 German divisions attack Paris. The French capital soon falls for the second time.

The peace treaty drawn up cedes even more lands to Germany, the Franco-German border now stretches from Charleville and Cambrai to Besançon. Additionally, all of French Guyana is annexed by Germany. The treaty is signed on August 15, 1870.

With France thoroughly defeated, Germany turns to improving it's already huge industrial capacity even more. The laissez faire and free trade policies of the Freisinnige Party means that while the state is nominally powerless, capitalists are free to build and expand both factories and railroads. While that means that things needed by the state, like armament, may not be produced as much as it wants, industrial expansion is greatly increased.

This is put into contrast with the absolutist Russian Empire to the east, it's lack of industrial advancement is easily seen by a comparison of the German and Russian railroad networks.

Revolutions in the (also formerly Dutch) East Indies call the attention of the government, and a military force is assembled to be sent there in order to crush the revolts.

1871

With France crushed, the only urgent matter left is the mass revolution that started in the East Indies during the war.

By now, the revolutionaries have taken control of most of Java and a part of Sumatra. To counter this, 3 colonial divisions are raised on Sumatra.

http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/9913/victoria200906280020275.png

2 Divisions which has been sent from Germany itself under Karl Friedrich von Steinmetz also land in Sunda, Java and quickly meet the main rebel army in a pitched battle.

The 3 colonial divisions, now under the command of (formerly Kronprinz) Friedrich, move to meet the rebels on Sumatra.

The German army decisively defeats the rebel army in the Battle of Surakarta and moves to liberate Java.

The French also seem not to like Germans occupying their land.

The former-Kronprinz continues to crush revolting armies in Sumatra.

Java is finally cleared by von Steinmetz.

http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/783/victoria200906291138160.png

Some worrying news, the Greeks and Russians have entered an alliance.

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/152/victoria200906291138445.png

The final revolts in Java are crushed and the East Indies are finally subdued.

1872-1873

With the revolutions crushed, Germany faces a new problem. The German army, now numbering hundreds of divisions and millions of men, has run out of people to crush and conquer. Some in the Frankfurt Assembly call for the demobilization of the immensely expensive divisions while the pro-military government refuses to cut down anything.

The German General Staff devises a plan to crush the French threat to the west once and for all. France has guaranteed the independence of Belgium in 1839, and Franco-Belgian relations are good. If Germany declares war and subsequently invades Belgium, France will be forced to react before they are ready or risk their frontier being expanded across the entire Belgian border. Furthermore, France is still under the terms of the peace treaty signed in 1870, breaking it would mean a great loss of French prestige.

The plan is put into action in June, 1872. Germany declares war on Belgium, and, as expected, France immediately declares war on Germany.

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/9862/victoria200906300207427.png

The German army marches into Belgium, reaching Brussels in a month. France rushes forces to help the Belgians, but soon enough the German army thrusts north from Cambrai in order to capture Paris, trap and destroy the Franco-Belgian army.

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/6893/victoria200906300214219.png

By November, Belgium is under complete occupation. While the German army was too slow in it's march to the Channel, a large amount of French forces have been trapped. The French army is also engaged in massive pitched battle with the Germans in Dunkerque.

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/3386/victoria200906300218030.png

Germany demands Belgian surrender, under terms which would include a massive annexation of most of Belgium and the rest becoming a German satellite. The Belgian government refuses, though their country is under complete occupation, perhaps hoping the French could still save them.

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/8240/victoria200906300218569.png

The Battle of Dunkerque drags on as the Hungarian Expeditionary Force engages the trapped French troops at Cambrai. The Germans push the offensive in the north with an attack on Amiens.

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/5279/victoria200906300219568.png

Germany drafts a new surrender offer to Belgium which includes a slightly less drastic amount of ceded land but still requires Belgium to become a satellite. The Belgian government, perhaps seeing that the French cannot save them anymore, agrees and subsequently declares war on France on November 29th.

http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/8634/victoria200906300221071.png

With the Belgians now on their side (Though their army was destroyed), the Germans can move forward with their plan. Belgium was never the target of the invasion, France was. With the French army bottled up in the north, the German divisions in the south attack.

http://img22.imageshack.us/img22/3687/victoria200906300221492.png

http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/5806/victoria200906300222322.png

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/2073/victoria200906300225384.png

The right flank of the German army now commences a massive envelopment. Dozens of divisions sweep through Normandy, cutting off Brittany and marching into southern France.

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/4153/victoria200906300227300.png

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/365/victoria200906300230155.png

By the end of March, 1873, approximately 2/3 of France have been overrun by German troops, with German divisions as far west and south as La Rochelle. The French army lays in tatters and is only able to field a few divisions to oppose a million German troops.

Seeing the French situation as hopeless, the Germans offer France a surrender. France would not lose any territory beyond what they lost in previous wars, but would become Germany's satellite as Belgium had become. This would secure the German's western frontier, freeing up approximately a million men for other duties.

http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/4452/victoria200906300234341.png

The French accept.

With the French now puppets and allies of Germany, the only real threat left on the mainland is the Russian Empire to the east. Though relations with them has warmed since the end of the Crimean War, they are still a direct threat to Germany. In order to deter any attack (And perhaps conduct an invasion in the future), Germany redeploys the 100 divisions that have, until now, been used to man the Franco-German border to the east.

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/1356/victoria200906300238477.png

Britain still poses a massive military threat, but they have so far been content to expand their colonial empire at the expanse of anyone in their way. Though the German land army is massively superior the British, the British fleet dwarfs the tiny German fleet. The Frankfurt Assembly now calls for an expansion of the navy, but nothing is yet certain.

Yeah, VIP is quite worth installing.

Unfortunately this campaign was made obsolete by the release of VIP 0.3...
