Hello folks. I have here a copy of Enigma Rising Tide Gold. It has been on my shelf for some time and I have today reinstalled it to give it another try and decide whether to keep it or not. I have spent two rather frustrating hours trying to complete a patrol and failed every time. Is it that I have been spoilt by enjoying Silent Hunter or am I expecting too much from this game? I have tried the simplest patrols offered, above and below the waves, and I just don't feel I am able to do what I want. Lack of information and sonar awareness, if under the water - all I have is the radar screen and rough range guide, and when on top and I am supposed to man the guns, I can't find out how to do that either. Grr. The quick start manual is basic and though there is a short manual on F1, it doesn't offer much in the way of tutorial, just keystrokes. If I look through the scope I have to come away from that to aim the torpedoes when in the sub, but have no clear idea how to do that:damn:. Maybe it is me being dim. I would like to give it a decent go. Is there a tutorial anywhere please?

Long time no-see She -Wolf:D.

Enigma-Rising Tide is not the most in-depth game, but it can be fun. I found the surface missions easier, and a quick tip on sinking subs - head towards the sub, launch hedgehogs (if u have them) when your practically on top of the sub, then stop over the sub. Drop d/'s at various depths and you will sink the sub soon enough (move your destroyer if u have to). Its kinda cheating, but it was the only way I sunk subs, so I could get onto later missions.

Good luck:up:

Hello Papa Smurf :) nice to 'see' you again. So... it isn't SH3, but its fun, if you can get into it, I guess that is what you are saying. Hmm, well, I will give it another go later and see if I can do better with surface missions, and squeeze some fun out of it. If not, Davy Jones Locker for it methinks. Thanks m'dear :):yeah:

Au contraire ;) AFAIK, the D/C's in Enigma will explode not only at their set depth, but also when they hit something (a sub contact, in other words). Setting your charges at variable depth may help, but not much IMO.

As for the difficulty of the campaign: I also find it notoriously difficult, and that's a common complaint. Once you get to play the missions where you're attacked from multiple directions by torpedo platforms, it gets really messy. Situation awareness is also something I found dearly lacking in ERT, apart from some of the most basic controls. After I was playing the game for about 15 minutes, I started reading the manual only to find out that it was really all there is to it - nothing more. Nice to look at, but IMO a pretty shallow game.

Shearwater, thank you, you have made up my mind for me - its going. I don't mind persevering if there is something worth the effort, but seems to me there is likely to be more frustration than enjoyment, so... :salute: and goodbye little game :yep:
