Yes, exactly, they can see underwater. I was hiding on periscope depth to wait nighttime on time compression when there was horrible sounds and when i did switch time to normal level all was already over. It happened twice now...:(

And i had no periscopes up...

Are you using the Trigger Maru Overhauled mod? It's my understanding that it was designed so that subs could be sometimes spotted underwater even down to a substantial depth.

21.) Planes are detecting me at impossible depths! What gives?!

This mod assigns additional visual sensors to unit types. One of these sensors goes to just aircraft. This visual sensor gives aircraft the ability to detect shallow submerged objects. However, there is a small problem. The radius of visual detection can be adjusted, just not the depth. There is a long drawn out explanation for the way things are set the way they are, but suffice to say, yes occasionaly a plane will make a detection at a seemingly impossible depth. Such occurances are by my experience however, rare. Submerged visual detection by aircraft, isnt a 100% thing. Several factors come into play such as, what angle your sub is to the viewing plane (bows on vs broadside), state of the sea, lightinig level, fog level, etc. Every step has been made to ensure that submerged detection is as realistic as the game engine allows, and fair to the player. Visual detection was even made to be effected by thermal layers. So all that can be done, has been done. You may wonder why this was one at all. Simply because the positive aspects of this particular mod far outweigh the occasional scruple. In the end this is a MODIFCATION, a mod is really nothing more then a hack at a finished product. Its not like i have acces to the source code to effect "real" changes.

As a general FYI, the ordinance that the planes in TM carrry, are designed to detonate at 77 feet (20 meters), and 148 feet (45 meters), as well as when they come in direct contact with the players submarine. Something to keep in mind when patrolling areas with frequent air cover.

Even in the "stock" game, you can not sit at periscope depth and expect not to be attacked. 150 ft is about the depth you want to be at while running submerged. While in shallow water where depths are less then 100 feet, you will want to be as close to the bottom as possible, and travelling 1 to 2 knots.

It is realistic to be seen at periscope depth.

So to say ... even when periscope is lowered there is a good chance to be seen when the recon plane is close enough ...

Yes, i do use Trigger Maru. I guess i did learned my lesson, no more time compression on periscope depth...

Once you get used to this feature in TM it really adds to the overall experience.

You don't need to be running with your periscope up anyway with TC if it's a concern. You're sonar picks up ships just as good. You should get radar after your first patrol, T key sticks it out of the water. I run using TC all the time with both scope and radar out of the water...as long as radar is out of the water:DL. Still a glitch can happen and maybe once a career you'll get that no contact plane that bombs ya.

I have been damaged using TMO at 200 ft...but very rare. Most planes carry 2-4 bombs. If you use the pause key and follow the bombs pausing every second, you can use the cam to watch them all the way to your sub. One will explode shallow, one deep...and so on.

I forget for the moment which boat was doing lifeguard duty and picked up a downed aviator and the pilot asked the skipper to keep his life boat as a momento. The skipper lashes the bright yellow lifeboat to the cigarette deck to only find out he is being spotted even hundreds of feet deep...:salute:

Makes me wonder how much TC you were using... I got good advice a while back and now never run over 256x in enemy waters - 512x in coverage gaps.

I generally use 8192*, and never have any problem with it. If there any AI units in the area the game starts to lag so I know there's something near my sub, and I go to 512* TC.
Never had any problems with aircraft detecting me though.. I remember one occasion where I was near Kobe, and for some reason the game kept sending huge groups of aircraft right over me with intervals of 30 minutes, so I must have encountered a few hundred aircraft, but none of them ever spotted me (periscope depth, day, calm weather)
I think it was with my RFB+RSRDC install.

If you go to that high a TC with no issues you are very much the exception to the rule.At that rate how do know for ceratin that you did not miss something?Unless you have a top of the line pc and even then I think the game itself has issues at high tc no matter the power of the system it is on.But you could be an exception to the norm.

There is some truth to that, but 99% of the time I think anyone can use high TC and have no problems as long as they...play smart. However, it's that 1% of deaths...you're moving along and high TC and get the death spin and have not a clue...no land, no contacts, probably not a mine in the middle of the ocean....but it was something. Be nice to have just a death replay only so we could know.

Wow... 8192 TC - by the time the game says back to 1x yer getting shot. Hard to believe you are not missing stuff... no matter how good or bad your PC is. I have missed contacts in bad weather at low TC and I am watching the screen! Sometimes they just pop in and pop right out... and even at 8x the target icon is just a flash. Poof!

Periscope depth while there are planes around bad idea. Very bad idea. Use the external cam to view your sub and change the depth until you're hard to see or disappear entirely. Better to wait out the day at 200-300 feet down than 60 feet below the surface.

Oi, i cannot use external view cause i always play on hard way...Only external view is event camera for some fun. :)

Ah well. Just remember the old saying then. "Run silent, run deep"
