Basically, I am still as of now a casual player..i am trying to get deeper in SH3. I can make my way out of sticky situations with destroyers....I understand the basic systems. I am trying to probe deeper by learning the TDC and manual torpedo management. Lets see how it goes.

Anyways....I had a question...I was playing SH3 (I know this is the SH4 section. ;) ) and the bismark mission. Almost 60% of my torpedos were duds. The angle on the bow was very very shallow. Is that responsible?? or is it a bug?? I know there is meant to be a failure rate...but comeon' 60% of all my torpedos?? And I am serious...I fired 3 torpedos on the english battleship (the biggest one) in the bismark mission. It still didn;t sink. And these 3 were torpedos which were actually a successful hit. The ship just started leaning in one direction. THats it. :-? :-?

So a successful torpedo impact is depedent on the angle on bow as well?? I am assuming its possible as a too shallow angle might not cause enough of an impact for the torpedo warhead to trigger. :nope: :-?

cheers,

AV

the torpedoes were likely duds because the impact trigger failed to cause detonation.

this occurs when the torpedo impacts the target at a shallow angle.

a good angle of impact is between 60-90 degrees.

if your torpedoes are striking the target at a shallow angle the trigger mechanism will not ... err.... trigger. causing the torpedo dud.

You should also expect to put a lot of torpedoes into a Capital ships hide until she sinks - I've put 6 into the Hood and 5 into a Renown Class before they've finally gone down.

I find the best place to aim for most ships is under the turrets - there's usually a magazine under them that ignites nicely, taking the ship down with it.

This is actually quite realistic. The impact fuzes on the German WWII torpedoes were a disaster. From the quite simple, and efficient, system used during WWI, the TVA (TorpedoVersuchsAnstalt) had developed an intricate multiple-staged system. It offered many parts which could malfunction and was dependant of a high-angle hit to work. Conditions were made worse by the TVA not being willing to accept the problems, minimizing these. Finally, as the this was being discovered by the crews before the war, icing problems in the Baltics complicated trials.

Eventually, a British impact fuze was being implemented on the German torpedoes. Then it worked. In addition to this came the depth-keeping problems which weren't completely solved untill '43.

The magnetic fuzes had their own problems which were terribly accentuated during the Norwegian campaign. This was much due to local, magnetic conditions. If the German uboat torpedoes had worked as they should during this campaign it would have been a total disaster for the Royal Navy.

AVI am afraid we have quite a terminology problem here. What does 'angle on the bow' mean to you? What it means to us (well, the majority concensus ;) ) is: the angle from the bow of the target, to your position, measured horizontally. So, as seen from the target's point of view. It is very similar (if not almost the same) as the bearing to your target, as seen in the ribbon-scale of your periscope/UZO. Your refference to it being shallow doesn't make much sense. Unless you mean to say he is comming right at you (AOB is small), sort of a down-the-throat-shot. That is definately not wise. This way he is presenting a very small side of himself to you. Shooting torpedos right in his flank (impacting 90 degrees 'angle on the bow') has a much better chance of becomming a hit because of the bigger area, and that surface is better inclined to 'push' the torpedo's impact sensor. (compared to a pointy bow section)

Or is it actually related to the depth-setting of your torpedo? Shallow meaning 'not much depth'. This is better than impacts going too deep, as they (deep settings) can bounce of the curved part of the lower hull. But battleships and such high value targets have an armor belt near the waterline. So, torpedo impacts there do not have as much effect. Unless you hit a spot with fireworks behind it. ;) But too shallow and the torpedo can sometimes be seen by the target in daylight (steam proppeled torpedos: T1), or it pops up out of a wave and goes sunbathing instead.

Please explain what you did better.

I think we are referring to the same meaning..but my terminology as u said is incorrect.

This is what I meant as well.

I guess I must have said "too obtuse" to be more precise.

Wow!! Fascinating to know that SH3 devs modelled the impact dynamics of the warhead in the torpedos.

Seriously!! This game needs a good manual to talk about what has been modelled properly etc. :hmmm:

THanks for the info guys. Looks like there is indeed a lot of detail in here. I didn't realize that the ship's have been modelled so detailed that certain areas are more prone to cause immediate devestation than others. Very very nice. I was wondering...... if u guys know the old UBI SH3 website....there is a video ("in-game footage.avi") where the german uboat is sailing and suddenly a warship formation (I know I am using the wrong terminology again...lol! I was a flight simmer ;) ) with 1 captial ship and 2 destroyers appears from behind the icebergs. After the crash dive, the demo shows the captain opening the recog manual and IDing the ship. Then he presses a "checkmark" box and u can see the various areas of the ship that u can select to assign as target.

Has this been removed from the final game??It has if you are playing GWX. I don't know about other mods. But it still is in stock SH3 if you get close enough I heard, and there was some other requirement I can't remember.

That is a very good question, because it is still viewable in my version of GWX3.0.....I am just not sure if it is for every vessel or those of the multitude I have added since the original release :hmmm:

Yes, a good question.:DL

Here's the answer, which should refer to any supermod:

All the Stock version vessels will have these 'hit boxes' and they will be accurate and usable.

Any/all community or additional vessel may still display the 'hit boxes', especially if they were cloned, but they will not be accurate and shouldn't be used.

To get the targeting boxes to appear, you need to be with in 1000m and with a AOB of (IIRC) +/- 5 deg.;)

These auto targeting boxes are coded to a specific location/compartment on the damage model of the vessel in question. Now considering that all community ships have modded damage models and zones these no longer match with the coordinate system that the recog manual uses to render & display the 'hit boxes'. TBH, I once looked at adding them back in, that is until I saw the coordinate system.:o Well, that and it was a sh*t idea to include in the game anyway.
