Hey everyone,
I'm only at my 9th patrol so far but I do enjoy the game very much. I'm in command of a type VIIB with a slowly becoming competent crew. However, I was wondering about the type XXI. Do we actually have a chance to command one for more than a single patrol, like that was the case in SH2? SH2 wasn't so bad even though it was too restrictive but I would have liked to be able to experience command of a XXI a lot more that just for an escape mission. If so, when does it become available?
One last thing. I'm having real difficulties to find convoys. During my nine patrols, I only received one radio message mentionning a convoy, which I managed to catch and score significant tonnage :yeah: . I usually run alongside coasts, where I always encounter isolated merchants or warships. Any hint would be appreciated. Thanks a bunch for everything! :salute:

Can't remember the exact date a XXI becomes available (at work right now) but it's a good six month or so depending on (if using SH3 Commander) whether you use historical U-boat availability dates or not.
Look at your shipping map (top left of screen) for a pretty accurate guide to the general convoy routes.
My favourite spot is 250km west of Gibraltar.

I'm not using SH3 Commander or GWX. As for the shipping map, I'm not sure I'm following you... :hmmm:

Okay...if you didn't get a paper version with your game disc, go into C\Program Files\Silent Hunter and you'll see a section named 'Documentation'. It will be in there.

Arrrgggh. Now I remember! Even though I found that map to be a nice addition to the package, I've never really looked at it carefully since I started playing ; it has stayed carefully folded in the game box. How dumb of me! Imagine all the juicy opportunities I probably missed... :haha:
Thanks a bunch bro!

Well, so far I haven't been lucky following that either. Always encounter warships but we much prefer merchants, don't we? :O:
Try looking around those areas:

As for XXI's they are available from July '44. Try a flotilla operating out of Bergen. Beware of aircraft and minefields. When leaving Bergen follow the minesweeper out the last part of the way. Allied bombers are doing night raids over the U-boot bunkers.

April 44, 11th Flotilla out of Bergen (with SH3 Commander historic U-boat availability dates unchecked).

I wasn't aware that there could be mines. Awesome! Do they start appearing right from the start of the campaign?

They come in at different dates, just as what happened historically.

On my first patrol out of Bregen after installing GWX, I was stupid enough to ignore the escort and went out on the southwestern way, like I used to while playing stock. I crashed my brand new XXI into the net. Twice.

I have entered/leaved through that route a couple of times with no problems. Probably a little coincidental. I have always been surfaced, though.

There are some maps in the GWX manual that outline where some of them generally are.....generally. ;) However, I think I've blundered into more friendly minefields than enemy ones.

Give me a date and a location and I'll give you a screenshot or better still, use the mission editor to have a look http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

If you really want to try out the XXI at any stage in the war try this mod:

Historically inaccurate but a hell of a lot of fun!

Historically inaccurate but a hell of a lot of fun! Thanks but I'm not that eager to try it ;) I still want to try all the nice equipment I can fit on the type VII, as I started in the 1st flotilla.
