Maybe I am not being patient enough...but I remember in the previous GW versions, on the 1st patrol you would eventually receive a radio message stating essentially that Germany was now officially at war with England, and to "commence operations". Then enemy ports would trun from green to red, and...well, it was on!

After installing GWX 3, I went on my 1st patrol (1st flotilla, August 39, in a type IIA) and was ordered to perform a 5 day shakedown cruise in grid AN81. Since we were not actually declared at war yet, I attacked nothing.

I returned to base (was never ordered to "commence opeartions"), and my 2nd mission now states...go to grid AN18 (right off the coast of allied territory) and perform another 5 day shakedown cruise.

Am I missing something?

several boats were deployed to blockade position a week or so before the outbreak of war.

this is what that is simulating.

pick an area to patrol where you think you would encounter the enemy and wait for the war to start

Enjoy the peace, sightsee, visit English and French harbors. The war starts on 01 September. Don't get caught in a Brit pub. :har::har::har:

Ah, thanks so much everyone!! I have to admit that bingeing on my Director's Cut copy of "Das Boot" this past week (can you believe it took me months to track down a copy in 5 different video stores??) has given me a mad hankering to go through a full campaign, which I've never done before.

I think I've watched that movie 7 times, start to finish, since I bought it last Friday. :)

Again, thanks so much for the help!

What date did you start the 2nd patrol?

I agree with Pisces in that you need to supply some dates here.

WWII started 09/01/39 but I don't think Germany started fighting with GB & France until 09/03/39. If you are in these periods, then those two countries should turn red.

Also, do you have someine in the radio room. Then you would recieve messages talking about the sequence of events that gets the war moving. If not, you'll never receive the order to start attacking.

I took my radio man out of the room since all the radio messages got annoying after awhile, might you have done the same thing?

Yes, or he was only one day in port, or some other (too) short duration by SH3Commander.

While waiting for the war to start, if you happen to see the SS Athenia... let her go!! You will save yourself a lot of grief later. :D

I just started playing SH3 and am using GWX3.0. On 3 Sept. 1939 at ~02:00, I got a radio message which told me that the English are fair game. I thought this was someone odd considering that England didn't declare war on Germany until 12:00 on 3 Sept. 1939 (at least if my memory serves).

Nobody seems to have mentioned the salient point here, which is that GWX3 starts you the first day of August (as the new Capt mentioned in his first post). The war doesn't start for a full month after that. This lets you simulate being on station before the war begins (which someone did mention, but not why).

...Director's Cut copy of "Das Boot"...
Now you need to order the 5-hour "Uncut" version, which is incomparably better.

Oh, and WELCOME ABOARD!:sunny:
