View Full Version : Oh Where, Oh Where Have Those Battleships Gone...?

Early this morning I entered Loch Ewe through a screen of 6 to 8 destroyers, Torpedo Boats and ASW Trawlers. I crawled on the western side of Loch Ewe by hugging the coast at 1kt to keep quiet while hopefully not running into and mines or subnets. Well, near 6AM I hit a subnet but suffered very little damage. The day was just breaking and I had a stationary destroyer about 500m from my sub but I chanced it and crawled over the net. My conning tower showed a little while I crawled over and the sub’s hull made all kinds of noise as it scraped the net but I finally made it and dropped back down to periscope depth. Again I crawled slowly towards the deck.

Finally I chanced a peek since the day wasn’t fully up. I am playing GWX 3.2 and was expecting to see the Battleships Revenge & Nelson per prior post. However, they were missing!!! I’ve looked all over Loch Ewe but could not find them anywhere though I remember the there were plenty of post describing where the Moored Capital Ships were located and their dates. I made this trip to show Bdu my value and show Prien that he wasn’t the only hotshot captain.

How disappointing, I came across a Modern Tanker, Small & Medium Merchant ships and off limits Hospital Boat and US Troop Transport. :-?

There is also a floating dry dock for 26,000 tons (Can this be sunk? How much renown? How many torpedoes are needed and where do I aim?)

Of course, once I open fire on the ships, I expect all heck to break loose with the destroyers and other support ships in and near Loch Ewe. I could deal with that if the payoff was worth it but I don’t think it is.

I blame the bad intel on Goering and his flyboys with their weak recon photos.

What also upsets me is that I was tracking a big convoy and already had sunk a large tanker. It also had 3 Ore Carriers that I would have liked to sink but I let this all go since I was saving my torpedoes for those 2 battleships.

So unless that Floating Dry dock is worth tonnage and/or renown, I’ll probably just crawl back out and resume my patrol.

So are there any known Moored ships for GWX 3.2? I don’t take this as cheating since there had to be plenty of spies:shifty: in GB passing on this information plus there had to be recon flights.

And what about that Floating Drydock, is it worth an attack or just a waste of torpedos?

After this experience, if I leave empty handed, I swear off entering ports.

Thanks,

BP

To find the dates of when capital ships are present consult the Campaign_Scr.

There are two floating docks, one is 33,200 tons and the other is 26,000 tons.

They are worth 30 and 25 renown respectively...hardly worth the effort.

A couple eels should do it, just put them on both sides if you can. Renown is minimal, around 20 i think.

I sunk one on Scapa Flow a few days ago, nice thing in a tonnage way but very disappointing when it comes to renown.

BTW, be sure it doesnt have a subnet around before you attack.

EDIT: Oh, jimbuna beat me posting.

OK, I might try this, if I can take out the Dry Dock, Modern Tanker and finally that Medium Cargo Ship, I would be up to around 40,000 tons.

Since they are all stationary, I hope I can take out the two merchant ships with magnetic shots while the Dry Dock will be with impact torps. I don't think I can hit each side of the Dry Dock, I hope I don't end up firing all torps to sink that thing.

The renown is not great but at least I get tonnage plus the crew gets some glitter to impress the ladies.

I’ve looked at the Campaign_Scr file. Can you explain to me or direct me to how to interpret the Longitude and Latitude lines.

For example, the Campaign_Scr file shows that the HMS Royal Oak is at Long=-360760.000000 and Lat.=7071270.000000. How do I convert this to something I can find on a map such as Google Map and then how do I eventually convert this to the SH3 map? I know that Scapa Flow is at Long. (58degrees, 55’33” N) and Lat (2degrees, 58’33”W). These can also be converted to (58.925833, -2975833) but I don’t know how to get it to the Campaign_Scr position..

Also, I noticed that the Royal Oak has a Way Point 1 of Long=-359961.000000, Lat=7070070.000000. Why? Does it move & why?

Thanks for helping out a fellow Kaleun,

BP

i'm wondering the same thing about what the values of Long and Lat in the campaign_scr.mis. i'm assuming that's the ship's entry point in the game, but where those coordinates relate too is a mystery to me

i searched in the mods subforum... but the only stuff that comes up are mods people released, not any thread explaining what the values are

i have a patrol coming up that's right around the time of operation weserubung, and it would be cool to get an idea where some big capital ships might be at... because they need to be sunk :DL

BBs and tonnage at anchor? Scripts and coordinates?

Why not just skip the patrol altogether and just alter the files?? :hmmm:

Seems easier to me...

oh well after enough searching i figured it out

next time i'll search for the proper terms instead of the coded stuff in the files. short version, use the editor

btw, sorry for necroing this thread, i had no idea it dated back to 39

As to the floating dry docks... In reality they have between 6 and 12 independant ballast tanks per side, and the dock itself is usually light enough to float with 2/3 of the tanks out of play. If there is a ship on dock however, it might be a bit more fun :p

The two drydocks represent the standard drydock and then the same one flooded. Why they have different renown values is beyond me.

That was intended to reflect the difference in tonnage.

So that's why SH3's Long & Lat are wrong.
Thanks for the link, and info. Mystery solved.
