I'm having trouble recognising ship nationalities at night due to the poorly illuminated flag on the staff. the lights arent aimed right toward the flag
and it renders the flag black.
may i assume that an illuminated flag is a nation not at war with GER.
any ideas on overcoming the above problem will be appreciated

so far I have found in all cases that if a ship bothers to put spotlights on the flag, they are nuetral. I often find, given no fog, if I am within 1,000 meters,I can cross-reference the flag with the ship recognition manual found either in the UZO or periscope station.
I know it's a given, but the closer to 90 angle on bow you are,the better view you have of the flag.
hope that helps.

All lit ships are neutral and should not be attacked. Unlit ships are another matter.:arrgh!:

If neutrals dont care about their ships neither would i, they deserve a visit to the bottom if they dont show their nationality clearly. :yep:

I'm assuming that you're using GWX. If so you could download the GWX Contact Colour mod. It restores the ship contact icons in the Nav screen to stock SH3 colours. It's not realistic but it will eliminate the possibilty of you sinking a neutral or friendly ship by mistake.

murr44, thanks for that. i'll download it.
errr...can you point me in the right direction to get the file?
thanks

additionally, anyone here think the problem may be in coordinating the spotlight beams better to illuminate the flag better? and does anyone here know what file would contain the information for the x,y,z coordinates?

thanks

I agree with you. I had the same problem. Now, I've learned that darkened ships are the ones to attack, but still, when I see a ship that has it's lights aimed straight at the flag and the flag is still dark, it's just a realism killer, so I too would like to see that fixed if possible.

I had this trouble the first time I attempted a 100% realism career, I had no "Free View" and I forgot...so I had to get real close to the ship (around 1km) to barely see it's flag altough it was illuminated, but before getting that close already fired 3 torpedos against her, then I found it was a Norwegian merchant and it was 1939, I was lucky she didn't sink otherwise my crimes against humanity count would have started :stare:

if i may, i would also like to comment on the above very good observation. i've plugged a neutral before and the reaction was way too quick. as tho the entire world was poised watching the action in my grid. i like realism. it would be much more realistic to not anyone besides uboot command know of the neutral sinking for months or even years, as in real life.
