View Full Version : What car do you drive?

So what car do we all drive here? It's often said that your car is an extension of your personality.

While drinking my overpriced beverage in Starbucks, I sometimes play a little game of assigning the cars in the parking lot to the individuals I see sitting and drinking their coffee. I'm usually right too....not always though. Sometimes I see someone get into a car that I would never have associated with them.

I think it would be interesting to see what some of the colorful characters here drive.

I have a 2008 VW Passat Turbo. Love it. Comfortable, quick and reliable. :)

None!

I just bought a new, good bike, and changed some things.

If weather permits, I consider every location inside 60-70 km to be "in reach" both regarding things I have to do there, and touring for fun.

Alternatively I use inliners for destinations not more than 25 km away, if there is a good route (smooth tarmac) available.

I hold a driver'slicense, but I almost never needed it, I never liked to drive, and I am lucky enough not to need a car. I hate busses. I like train, and Berlin subway.

Heh, well I wouldn't dare to judge about personality from a materia. I think most people choose the car to buy which they can afford..

Well, that is not my car. The pictures are taken from the German Wikipedia site. But mine is almost in as good shape as the one in the pictures (I even had to take a close look whether that really isn't mine:D).
The colour isn't that great (it looks better in red and black) but I got used to it over the years. Even if I should buy a newer car once I want to keep this one too.

Quick question. I was looking into an older 512TR for a bit until I heard that you have to get them tuned every 5K miles and its about a 10K job. Is it cheaper than this or is my area just a bit over the top?

My first car was a used 1973 Volvo 164E. I liked the way the 142 looked though. The 164 had a 3 litre straight 6 that was a beauty. Unfortunately it was linked up to the automatic that was a bit slushy back in the '70s.

1.2 Million miles? I am impressed. I got 250,000 + out of mine before I moved on. Mechanically it was sound but cosmetically it needed a lot of work that I could not afford at the time.

Did you have a problem with paint oxidization with your '68? In the 70s Volvo must have gotten a batch of bad paint. A lot of the '72-75s had problems with specific paint colours.

I liked my volvo. But then I guess cars may be like women, you always have fond memories of your first. :yeah:

The thing looks like rolling death. The paint has essentially worn away due to wind erosion. There is spotty light surface rust all over it. It started out as a green car. Now it is green, gray, and pink primer.

There is NO rust out holes in it. The body is still sound. The body plates were double zinc chromate dipped. Once someone dumped a pint of paint stripper on it and it ate its way down to the pinkish primer. It never rusted after that dispite having no paint over it.

It was purchased in Europe by my father in law and given to me by my wife soon after we started dating. It has been driven in the states since the early 70's. I have had it since 1994.

Mechanically it is sound. The only real problem is keeping the dual SU carbs in sync. When something DOES break, sometimes finding a part can be difficult.

I really enjoy running down the highway at 70+ MPH and see the look on peoples faces as I cruise right by them. That is the reason I hang onto it besides being a gift from my wife. NOBODY owns anything close to it. It seems that if someone has an old car, it is a Mustang, Camaro, or some other kind of musclecar.

I am convinced the reason I did not get a lot of speeding tickets is that no one looking at the car could believe it could go that fast.

Sorry to hear that the paint problems seemed to have been around in the late 60 models.

Mine was a metallic green but ended up camouflaged. It used to be awkward when registering the car when the form asked for the vehicle colour.

"uh Volvo coloured?" was not a good answer. :D

Sorry no. This like any hi-perf car has to be driven aggressively. By that I mean not like a maniac but you can't lug it down around town.

You have to keep the rpm's up for the legal speed your going.

That is why this car is more user friendly on the open road than in town.
That is why I put on my other post , tuneups as needed.

You lug this car around town and you might be lucky to get it to the shop before 1,000 mi.

I bought her with 1100 mi with fresh tune and all maintenance done.

I have close to 8,000 mi and haven't been to the shop except for oil change service and some minor adjustments.

While I didn't buy her for speed but, for styling beauty and supurb handleing.

I twice while on the way to Laughlin, NV , I STUPIDLY and FOOLISHLY joined the 200 mph club. :-?

I once had a 1982 Volvo 245 wagon. I was blasting down I-10 in Florida knocking back triple digits. I had a 242GLT intercooled turbo engine in it that was overbuilt and overboosted.

Anyway, I BLASTED by a local boy and he pulled out, sirens on, but failed to pull me over. Luckily for me I had brake lights that I could disable with a switch and I rapidly slowed down. He FLEW by me without flagging me over.

As it happens I knew the guy and later asked him why he did not nail me? Did I own him a favor now?

He told me he remembers the radar alarm and the 110+ reading. From his blind he didn't see me approach and when he pulled out all he saw was cars that looked to be at normal speeds. He remembered seeing my car but discounted it as he thought that there was no WAY a volvo could do that kind of speed.

To this day I think it was the fact that I was in a Volvo wagon that was biege in color that saved me.

If I ever do the hot rod thing again, I am going to have it painted in fleshtone biege. They are ignored as they are so ugly.

You bring up a good point. It is not just having a car capable of such speeds, you also need a road capable of supporting it.

Oh really?! Mmmh, you should be nominated for this month's "Good Taste Award" :03:.
So far i am very happy with it - as you say it is fast and comfortable. I am also pleased with its fuel consumption: Despite having 60hp more power and being almost 400kg heavier, it needs the same amount of fuel as my old Opel. You also have the 7-gear Double clutch gearbox?

@Schroeder: Of course :arrgh!:.
I know that it is a shame to scrap cars which still have a few more years in them (as my old Astra), but noone wanted to give me more than 400€ for my old car. Here is the last pic of it:

I agree.....the subsidy usually only benefits the person who can afford to buy a new car.

A lot of people drive older vehicles because that is all they can afford.

Besides....they brought the subsidy out a year after I prurchased my new vehicle :DL

My oil burner disco tilts the bonnet with the torque, but he old rangie v8 practically turned itself on its roof. And the noise! Straight through pipes v8 burble until you gave it some stick; those were the days. Out in the middle east it cost about 15 dinars to fill up - the only real reason I didn't get a v8 here is that with the cost of fuel I'd only be able to drive it about once every 6 months, despite the advantage of v8's having less mileage and wear on a second hand buy.

I twice while on the way to Laughlin, NV , I STUPIDLY and FOOLISHLY joined the 200 mph club. :-?

That must have been hard to do in a car with a top speed of 180 mph.

lol no way! You never struck me as the sort of guy who would cane it about in an Evo10. Now I have visions of you pulling gees whilst drifting round corners! :O:

Does yours have the little button on the dashboard that sprays cold water over the intercooler? I remember seeing that on a Top Gear review...

As for my wheels: '97 land rover discovery 300 tdi

Yep, I drive an Evo :D
And, yes, mine is submarine black.

The European version shown in Top Gear includes a higher HP engine (with the little button, I suppose). In the U.S., we have to live with just 291 horses:

2000 Honda Accord and an 07 Accord for me they last. For fun I have a 97 Prelude with some things I did over the years. By the way unless FIREWALLS car is very highly modified its top speed is 180MPH according to http://www.ferrari.com/English/GT_Sport%20Cars/Classiche/All_Models/Pages/Testarossa.aspx thier offical website and that would be new no way any older machine no matter how well kept they are always going to lose power over time even the 512 max speed 195mph.Also I have seen several of these inside over the years the speedo does not go to 200mph(used to vallet park in Ft.Lauderdale in the summers).I might as well say that my Accords can go 200mph. Dont get mad at me FIREWALL it will just entertain me.:har:

Nice EVO Bill 291 HP is alot more than what most cars are pushing out.I bet you eat those little street racer punks for breakfast with it.I know I do in my Prelude and you got about 71 BHP on me.:yeah:

I do carsharing. If I need a SMARTfour2, i get that one. If I need a SMARTfour4, i get that too. If I need a Focus Kombi, a small bus... you get the idea.

Its cheaper than owning a car (for my usage anyways), environmentally it makes sense and I am totally flexible with which car to choose.

Oh, I also do own two bicycles, which work great for my everyday commute to work and/or visiting friends.

Hey do any of you motor heads know what the top speed on my GLI is?? The engine is the 2.0 turbo if that helps.

The speedo goes up to 180 but I chickened out at 135, only because there are just way too many toolbags on the NYS highway systems.

I dont know how it is in other places but in NY if you have the fee you get the license, you got it. I'm sure they turn down some applicants but thats only because the "seeing eye" dogs can't find the DMV!

Hanomag why dont you look it up? No one else can since you did not list the year. But Id say about 150mph or so a buddy of mine had a 2002 Jetta with the I-4 turbo i think it put out 180BHP in that range and he got it up to 145mph according to the speedo a few times while I was in the car with him. Of course speedos tend to loose accuracy once you get over 100mph they start to get off +or- a few mph.Honestly though you dont really want to go that fast anyway at that rate of speed if something goes wrong it aint going to be pretty.Much safer to go to a track for that sort of thing. Also most cars if they have an analog speedo they will put a speed on there that the car cant really get to not in stock format anyway it is a marketing thing.

OK I saw your earlier post an 08 Id say 150mph range then I know that Benz and BMW sold in the USA that can go over 155MPH are cut off at 155MPH so I will assume the same here VW being another German make it may be a DOT law for anything that is not considered an excoitc car to be limited to 155mph. Dose not matter though as you cant outrun a police raido or go fast enough to get out of the line of sight a chopper.

I didnt want to look it up cause I am lazy and theres always someone who knows better or more....

Actually I have had my radio "outrun"... alot of times. In fact with the NYPD's cowardly no pursuit rule, it always gets "outrun". Patrol supervisors call off the pursuit before you can mash the pedal. We even had one instance where the perp was firing at the pursuing unit and the patrol supervisor was still trying to shut it down.

As for choppers, you have to pull Aviation away from there spaghetti and clam sauce before they can even get authorized to take off.

I am definitely aware of the dangers of high speed driving.-----> You are only a half second away from being in a twisted ball of steel with your intestines hanging out of your mouth.

Personally 75 is my cruising speed although I have drifted to 85 on occassion. Just that one time the highway was empty and I wanted to see what that lil German car could do, so I stomped on it. I have had Crown Victorias and Chevy Caprices up to 120 but NYPD patrol cars are wrecks and they shake apart at high speeds. Needless to say my VW was much smoother.

Anyways Thanks for the answer... like I said someone always knows better or more... :arrgh!:

That is in your sissy northern states down here in FL they are not that strict they arent that strict in most states really. They have such good raido down here in alot of the poorer counties they dont even have a chopper.

Thoughy really in most of the US there are not many places where you can really get up to a high speed anyway becasue of traffic and such. I live in a pretty rural area and there are only a few places I can think of I can aslo think of the wicked crashes NY is really lame if they call off a chase where the person has fired on cops.Funny thing is some guy came up with a chip that is only $20.00 that could be placed in every car that would allow an equiped L.E.V disable the car safely it basicly what those bait cars have.As for cop cars the ones that are used by most are not that fast topend wise. Now The ones that Highway Patrol/ State Police use those are much faster.

I know a city cop and he had just standard Police Interceptor(Crown Victoria) and he attempted to stop a stolen Honda Element (the top all wheel drive model) the guy ran got over the top speed of the city PI which was about 135mph so they asked an FHP to come in with thier version of the Police Interceptor the Honda could not pull away from that one with a top end around 160 MPH. the crazy thing is this means that the Elemant must have been able to go around 145 mph since he was able to pull away from a cop going 135 mph with ease. But it was not the FHP that made him stop it was the raido as there where some Deputies in thier cars waitng up the road and the guy got nailed.

I bet it was more than one time no man can resist trying to peg it you just need a very long very empty road. The time my friend did 145 in the Jetta we where on this very long road outside Hastings FL, the cops never hang on this road much and very low traffic we passed this guy in some POS Sunfire and we stayed at about 85 and this Sunfire trys to overtake and I tell my friend no way your going to allow this so he said nope and we took off we got up to 125 and Sunfire was beat so slow back down to 85 and he tries again. So this time we went all the way to 145(the car just wont allow more) and the guys lights faded into the horizon. You can also go to Germany the Autobhan. I was stationed at Ramstein and I once took the old 87 M3 I had and pushed her all the way to about 145mph(speedo was metric no mph) this was early in the AM and there was no one else on the raod to endanger but myself if I had made a mistake of course over in Germany they know how to drive unlike here in the states where most people will sit going 80mph with one hand on the wheel fully ready to control thier car staring at a dvd player and yaking on their cell phones with thier left foot proped up on the dash borad.:dead:

Yep lovely looking machine though the body shape was based on the Mustang MachII and unfortuantley Sledghammer I don't own one though there are a few about. I used to have an 351 XA coupe but the bloody drum brakes on the rear wheels cought alight on one drive and I ened up having to scrap her. The XB had discs all round which worked much better.

That limo has one problem it has to be a bitch to get out off. Also who cares what the MPG is how the hell could you pull up to the pump?It must have the old flip up the plate gas filler neck that would really suck to try and fill at a normal gas station.Ha it would be like the dash 86s we had in the Air Force nothing to stop you from over filling them man i saw so many dofus airmen over fill those things.Nothing like seeing 5 gallons a second of JP-8 spray all over the place.
It does look like it could be in that stupid reality show with the redneck weddings theyd have to have it done in Real Tree though hook up a trailer and go on a hay ride then park in front of the 72 trailer home/meath lab and spend the night in the "suite".They could use the Prius as a step ladder.

While I drive a gas guzzling 2003 Toyota Sequoia, my dad drives a
2008 Porsche 911 GT2. I, as you can all imagine, am very envious. I asked for a 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda (http://images.forum-auto.com/mesimages/327261/Plymouth%20HemiCuda%20Black%2046.jpg) for my graduation and my 18th birthday present, they said no. I have to wait until I turn 18 in November to get it, yet I still gave up the grad present:cry:.

My dad is going on vacation to the Swiss Alps with some friends of his for the next 2 weeks. He said, to keep me at bay for wanting the Cuda early, I can USE his car while he is gone:D:rock::yeah::smug:!!
2 FULL WEEKS:cool::o!!! Then the convsation about the Cuda stops until November.

While I would love to post an actual picture, my camera is broken so I just have the Porsche picture.

I always go for someone else's car. I can't tell you how nice it is to drive someone else's vehicle. No payments. insurance, gas. I just leave it a few thousand feet from where I'm going and pick up another one on the way out.:DL

You all should try it! Its easy and inexpensive.
