I was patrolling off of Honshu. Minding my own business, when my world-famous look-out calls out "Land Unit Spotted!"

We were a bit close to the shore but I was trying to shave a little time off my transit time.

Land unit spotted? What do they think I am, the USS Barb? I have been called a flunky, but I am no Fluckey.

Land unit spotted? Gee I am happy for you, exactly why should I care about land units being spotted?

It became evident that land units include shore based artillery units.

Unlike submarine based artillery, it appears that shore based artillery are not only much more accurate, have a faster rate of fire, but a rather long range.

Shore artillery units hurt :o And it takes a long time to out range them.

Education occured. Lesson learned. :88)

Anyone else experience the unpleasantness of "land unit spotted"?

Well I see you answred your own question.

Too bad they have to use the generic 'land unit' instead of "Shore battery spotted" that might be a little more helpful.

Typically though you can spot them while still out of range and take evasive actions. I dunno like diving.

Not yet, but I avoid land, shallow water, and in general, want as much water under my keel as I can get.

I haven't got too many Special Missions yet - I weasel out and skip 'em, although harbor penetration can certainly be a stiff challenge.

On this specific mission I was unable to dive due to previous damage. Or to be more accurate I was able to dive, I was unable to surface again. Submarines can always dive :D

It made for a sporty return trip, hence my cutting corners. A tactic I will not be using in the future. :88)

Yep! Most painfully... :)

Shore batteries should also have an advantage over you in terms of camouflage. They can just lurk between the trees while you come cruising on open waters with a nice and shiny bow wave smiling and waving at them so it might be almost too late when you recognize the first shells coming in.

I suppose my subchaser issue could be technically be interpreted as a land unit! LOL

Nope, I never suffered from "Land unit spotted!" in terms of being shot at afterwards...

I have been shot at without the warning, with disturbing precision.
I guess black Porpoise class subs going 1/3 at night are easy to spot 6-7nm away...
I now avoid Wake like the plague... no more hunting for stray patrolling ships around there while on the way back to base... Luckily, Wake only has 5in guns (historically, iirc, I think...)

I dread actually running into such things during the day, then I can be freaking out about being shot at, rather than freaking out wondering what was shooting at me.

They tend to wait until you are well within range and hit you on the first shot.

One gave my boat bad damage off Singapore once, thought I had hit a mine at first.

I don't mind the shore batteries so much.

What I DON'T like is not being able to shoot at something that can shoot at me!

Those shore bats can be a bitch and you never really know where they are going to be either one reason why I avoid being within 8 miles of any coast if I can unless it is a photo rec and then I try to stay in the middle away from either shore.I have seen those suckers even spot my scope a few times at night.

I've had the "land unit spotted" sometimes when close to an enemy shoreline and IIRC it occurs when you approach Pearl too so it applies to both enemy and friendly "land units".

If this only occurs regarding shore batteries (enemy or friendly) couldn't the sound file simply be changed from "land unit spotted" to "shore battery spotted"?? Is there such a phrase from a WWII Sub movie etc which could be inserted?

Comments?

I avoid enemy shores. I syopped going into harbors in SHIII because it is just to predictable within the code. You can sink a BB, head home, and go right back on the next patrol and there is your BB again... I prefer the deep water.

I did get hit by them once in SHIII because I needed to get up for air and underestimated their ability to get you in the first shot or two. The haven't got me since ;)

@rditto48801: It doesn't matter if your Porpoise was black, pink, green or a pretty shade of fuchsia.. AI will see it the same (unfortunately).
