View Full Version : False sinking

This has only happened a few times as long as I played, but maybe someone can make sense out of it.
Sink a ship...locked periscope on it, not a blind shoot, two torps hit. No ship sunk icon. Could still see the ship, but scope wouldn't lock...like it was sunk. Finally sunk 700 yards away, but no ship sunk message, icon or credit.
Next ship sunk fine...TMO, RSRD, correct patches.... mods are in proper order.....

I have had similar occur in stock.
Most times there seemed to be a lack of ship sunk icons/messages for me, it seemed to involve visibility, with my sub at periscope depth or deeper with scope down when such things occurred, or with a ship being 'visible' on screen, but not shown on the map, indicating it was likely 'outside' of the crew's visual range.
One surface night attack on an unescorted convoy comes to mind, little light, poor visibility, I torpedoed a 3 ships (2 fore, 1 aft) before surfacing and sounding general quarters. Darn deck gun started firing at a smaller merchant aft, which got hit maybe a dozen times and set on fire by one shot below and to the fore of the stacks, before I designated a bigger target, as I didn't care about the little ship at the time. The small ship was still on fire and was no longer in 'visual range' (it stopped showing up on the map) as I chased another bigger ship heading away at a 90 degree angle. The burning small ship then had an explosion shortly afterwards, which I saw and heard, and it appeared to sink, but there was no ship sunk icon on map and I don't recall a message either. Due due to the chaos of the overall convoy attack, I was unable to confirm if I got credit or not. Part of the trouble is the ships went 2-3 different directions, some were damaged, and I had (bad) luck and detected another potential convoy (with at least one warship), so I bugged out before anything actually dangerous joined the party, so it was hard to tell if I did get credit for all the kills I was responsible for.

Ha ha maybe it was one of those infaltable deals like the fake tanks and planes that all sides used in WWII you sank a giant pool toy. That has never happened to me i have sunk ships that did not show up marked on the map at times but I always got the credit.

Attacked a large convoy late evening, fired 8 fish at 4 ships with 3 sunk ship icons on the map. Not much of a problem avoiding the escorts, get away, secure from SR. Go to periscope depth and hello, there are two stationary targets burning, one large tanker and one medium transport. Go to 35 feet, radar picks up an of escort laying off a few miles just drifting. Turning my attention back to the burning ships, I get within 500 yards, the scope will lock on to only one, the smaller transport. One torp takes care of him but I really want that fat tanker.
More persecution by the escort, finally shake him, he leaves. I wait around finally surface and sink the tanker with the deck gun. Only takes a few rounds. The tanker sinks but I don’t get a sunk ship icon where it was. Looking at the log, I was credited with sinking two large tankers, one large and one medium transport. Did the game give me credit for the tanker as being destroyed even though it wasn’t completely sunk? I didn’t shoot at 5 ships but since I was in the middle of a convoy, I could very well have hit one with an errant torp.

Running RFB I have noticed a ship I torpedoed sinking and with only the tip of the stern out of the water, only then do I get the timely message
"She is going down" I wonder about my crew sometimes. :nope:
Really? What a relief, for a moment I thought I had torpedoed one of those rare Japanese submersible cargo ships. What gave you the first clue she was going down?
Was it the big gaping holes that coincidently lined with up with where our torpedoes exploded?
Or was it when the whole bloody ship SANK BEFORE OUR VERY EYES???
It is like my genius of a lookout.
I torpedoed a ship and am following it to see if I need to hit it with another torpedo. Ship is 1000 yards in front of me. Been following it for about an hour. Been firing my deck gun at it.
Suddenly I hear "Ship Spotted" I crap my pants thinking that some destroyer has arrived. No only one ship in the area.
"ship spotted, short range"
Oh really, you mean that big metal boat looking thing about 300 feet long that we have been following for an hour? That big boat about 1000 yards right in front of us? THAT BOAT? AND YOU JUST NOW NOTICED IT?????
Why oh why did they get rid of Fleet Flogging? :damn:
Really sucks that you did not get credit for the sinking

It happens from time to time.
My favorite was striking a freighter and crippeling her. A DD in his haste to teach me a lesson broadsided the freighter causing her to explode and taking them both down :o
No credit for either.
