I've heard that allowing a torpedo to detonate under a ship instead of direct impact causes more damage.
But is it really a big difference?

It all depends on where the torpedo detonates and also the weather conditions.

Often, breaking a ships back can be more productive than putting a hole in her.

i usually sticked to impact so i would be sure i got a hit,but i guess i could use it for crippled foes :salute:

On my current patrol I ran across two ships sailing together unescorted. It was very dark so I couldn't see what type of ships they were. Not knowing what depth to set a mag at, I set up a fast 90 with an impact torpedo. It hit, stopped the target, and set it on fire. But the target did not sink.

The light from the fire illuminated both ships well enough for me to identify them as two Liberty Ships, so I set my torpedo depth to 7.5m with magnetic pistol, and fired at the second ship. It split apart and sank. I then wasted a second fish to finish off the disabled first target.

In my experience, a torpedo detonated by magnetic pistol about 1.5m below keel will usually cause more damage than a torpedo detonated by impact against the side of the hull. This is as it should be.
