i lost the covflgalb.dds file from my menu/gui/rec file. As a result SH 4 loads but then dies. the error message reads no covflgalb file. Short of reinstalling SH 4 is there somewhere I can retrieve the file?
Thanks

There may be other methods but I would go with a re-install. When you go to remove it will ask if want to keep your save files say yes and they will stay.I hope that helps but do be aware that I am an idiot so taking my advice might be harmful to your health that is what my 8 year old daughter said to me anyway when I asked if she wanted to learn to ride her bike without training wheels you should have seen my wife laughing at me.:har:

Welcome to Subsim, krosen! I wouldn't even hesitate. I'd reinstall. You can keep all your savegames when you do that.

After you do that, make a new directory, \SH4 Pristeen and copy everything from your \Wolves of the Pacific directory into it. I write protected the whole shooting match, although that means when I copy back to my active game I have to write enable everything. As long as you keep SH4 Pristeen write protected and never play it, it can be your toy box for problems like you're having now and you never have to worry about reinstalling again!:D

OK, I've already had one request to run that by one step at a time, so here are hopefully complete and detailed instructions on how to make an SH4 Pristeen folder (hate folders, I always sat directory since I'm an old DOS houind).

You have to start out with a freshly installed virgin copy of SH4. I wouldn't even play it before I do this. You want to know with 100% certainty that this is a brand new unmodded game. Now start Windows Explorer Those DOS hounds like me are yelling "Use xcopy! Use xcopy!" Yes, after 20 years xcopy can do this whole thing in one step, where we will be using the wimpy Windows Explorer and doing too many steps.

The first thing you want to do is create a new directory (folder--yuk!) under /program files. So open up /program files in Windows Explorer and right click an empty spot. In the pop-up menu pick new, then folder (yuk!). The new folder will have its name selected so all you have to do is type "SH4 Pristeen." That's your empty shell to carry your toy box.

Now switch over and open your \program files\Wolves of the Pacific directory. Install JSGME.exe into it. If you're doing multi installations, put MultiSH4.exe in there too. New type ctrl-a to select all files and subdirectories. Either type ctrl-c to copy or right click and select copy.

Switch back to your empty \program files\SH4 Pristeen directory and press ctrl-v to paste copies of all those files and directories there. You can also right click and choose paste.

To ensure that your pristeen game cannot be altered, and in fact cannot even be played, you'll want to write protect all directories and files therein. Navigate back out to the \program files directory and right click on \SH4 Pristeen. In the pop-up menu select properties. In the attributes section on the bottom, check the read only box and press the OK button. This will take awhile to write protect everything there.

You've now made a clean copy of all game files that you can plunder at will when you lose a file or if you're curing mod soup. You should never have to reinstall the game again. Just remember to remove the write protection from any restored files or directories after you copy them back to your active game directory.

Clear as mud? Any questions?
