View Full Version : Starter pack - what essential starter mods do you recommend with GWX 3.0 Gold?

I apologize for starting a new thread about GWX 3.0 Gold,and maybe it is in the wrong section,but I would rather discuss it here instead of the Mods Workshop,as that is used primarily as the shopping centre for the mods themselves.
I want to talk about what mods you deem important or even essential for a fresh install of GWX 3.0 Gold.
Below are the mods I currently have enabled through JSGME -

- 16km atmosphere (I wanted this in stock,due to the poor observation skills of the watch)
- Captain America's Officer Icons (I used to have this in stock before)
- Enhanced Damage Effects
- Integrated Orders (I need to get familiar with this)

The other default mods inside GWX Gold I have left for the moment,as I guess they are there for you when needed,and so will be installed only then accordingly.
nikbear who kindly shipped me GWX also gave me loads of mods too,but I am a bit unsure of which are deemed important by most GWX players.I could ask nik himself,but I would prefer opinions from a wider audience in order to get an average of the most popular mods.

The first thing I want to get rid of is the edge around the scopes,leaving just a black border instead.I DO have a mod for this already,but I am unsure if it is the right one for GWX Gold.Can someone direct me to a mod that caters specifically for GWX?.

I like sound immersion a lot,and I actually like radio chatter,so again,a list of appropriate mods will be welcomed.
Do you also recommend installing Thomsen's sound packs over the GWX sound files?,as a lot of the GWX sound files sound great already,especially the crash dive sequence,prob my fav.I wouldnt really want to overwrite this if I can help it,but if Thomsen's files are even better then so be it.

I hope you don't mind me asking all this,and I would like to come back to this thread as more wants and needs become apparent.

I almost forgot,

I hate to be picky here,but I noticed the diesels in GWX Gold default sound a bit odd/quiet,is this normal?.I like to think there would be more mechanical influence,the sound of the pistons working etc.Same with the electrics,I like the quiet hum of the engines this time,yet,they sound a little strange,but that is probably me because I dont know what real UBoat electrics sounded like ;)
Am I right in thinking Thomsen's sounds recognize and correct this?.

My off the top of my head list(I'm at work, so I don't have my exact list):

Thomsen's Sound Mod-really good. I recently disabled it for Sailor Steve's Das Boot Sound Mod though for a change.

Longer Repair Times-I think it is a must have. Gone are the 2 second repairs of a compartment in stock. It will make you sweat when being hunted by destroyers.

Water Stream/ Exhaust Smoke Combi-mod-just added it-AWSOME MOD! :yeah:

Another Combimod GUI v1.1.0 by Mikhayl-based on OLC's GUI

Realistic Torpedo Damage-great graphics of torpedo damage and gun damage on ships and your sub. Not just the dirty brown area where your torpedoes hit in stock.

GWX Mission and GWX Warning Orders

Ultimate Aircraft Sound Mod

British Asdic Sound

Lutzow's 5th Music Tale-Provides some nice atmosphere at times. I've recently downloaded his 4th one and am waiting a return to port to enable.

There are a few others that I have enabled but I can't think of them off hand.

There are a ton of other great mods out there.

Don't forget skins, Von Dos' ships, and a ton of gramaphone music to keep you and the crew entertained while on patrol.

The best thing to do is peruse the link I supplied and/or the download section, experiment, and enjoy!

I already got a few of Ven's the other day actually :woot:,I like his war radio mod,lots of traffic and interference hehe.Good for chasing a convoy,could simulate the interference from the convoy :hmmm:
He seems to specialize in sound mods at his BTS site,lots of music and sound files.

I mentioned before about a mod I have for removing the rim from the scopes by default,leaving a black border,like having your eye pressed up to the eyepiece.Is anyone familiar with the following mod and do they know of a better one for GWX Gold?
The mod was done by the alias 'Sale' based at www.flottenbasis.de (http://www.flottenbasis.de)
It is simple,effective,and gets the job done,and seems compatible with GWX

OLC Gui will do that for you (And I bet it got included in the CD sent to you by nikbear), but in case you want something even simplier and are not bothered about the in-game stadimeter dissapearing, you can also try my own mod, which has a NYGM and a GWX version: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=147757

Can you just explain a little about both?,what is contained in the packages.I want something simple,effective,and fairly realistic.What I dont really want is something too complex,which can actually be a hinderance as it diverts your attention from more serious matters.
And no,the stadimeter is practically useless to me,I prefer using estimates based on the eyeball method,and then the ruler for more accuracy.

I just DLed Hitman's optics mod,which I have to say looks a lot better and is far more accessible.There are just two things troubling me here -

1 - I am not sure if Hitman put the manual/auto switch on there,I cant seem to find it.Would be handy to flip that from the same screen.

2 - Not sure if this is related to the new optic mod,but I am just leaving Kiel on my first mission,and noticed something very odd.My watch officer seems to have shrunk in size,he looks about 2ft smaller.I cant tell if he is stood in some sort of depression (I am in a Type II) as the light is too dim at the moment.

Anyone experience this before?

It seems Thomsen's Sound Pack was causing one or two problems,when used in conjunction with Hitman's scopes mod.The CTRL+S function had also stopped responding.I decided that I wanted to keep Hitman's scopes and disable TsSP :nope: Shame they wont work well together.But having a stable game with SUPPORTED mods is far more important :yeah:
Suffice to say my game is back to normal now,so far so good.I must say Hitman's scope screens are great,just a shame the manual/auto switch isnt there (I cant see it that is),its a switch that gets used quite a bit.Other than that,excellent :up:

Torpedo Explosion...this is a small workaround brought about because the game engine associated two sounds to one file (the explosion and clatter of cutlery).

As I am about to experience my first proper night in GWX3G I have just caught sight of the moon coming up on the horizon,yet it doesnt look right,its far too big and doesnt give off enough luminosity in my humble opinion.I really hate to start looking for faults with this expansion as its bloody brilliant,I would just like to see a better looking moon,that is both brighter and smaller.Is there a mod out there for this?

I didnt mean anything bad by my request jim :o,I just thought a brighter smaller moon would have been nice for those that wanted one,something like that top image of yours.I just thought the moon looked a bit too big,and didnt look luminous enough,at least from the moon I am familiar with out of my bedroom window.I am sure you understand and its no big deal,I am still engrossed by the experience.Man I havent even skimmed the surface yet.

How did you enable that brighter moon?

Try these Paul, there are two moons to choose from...you can copy and paste the files or better still, install via JSGME.

Only try one at a time mind :DL

You must remember that the nights in GWX3.0 are the darkest they have ever been as a result of the inclusion of the excellent olc environmental mod.

I know what you mean about the nights getting darker,I have experienced it now.Brilliant effects.I imagine it does get very dark far out to sea :timeout:
