Beware, Paul. Schnorkel is not a 100% solution to the ASW aircrafts. Under certain conditions the contrary.

I appreciate that fact Leandros, thanks :yep:
Still,it has to be the only viable option next to risking a full surface run,or running at 7m decks awash.Using the Schnorkel would be ideal at night, then lower it in daylight using the electrics as normal. The only problem I can think of with it is the complete lack of warning from warning receivers etc, relying solely on your own eyes and a bit of guesswork as to when you next expect an air attack.
Regarding radar, does it give off much of a signature?,does aircraft radar really become that deadly like in real life?,so that even the smallest raising of the periscope can be picked up?,hope so,after all, this really was the case and must have been a nightmare of a revelation for the UBoat crews, making it practically impossible to do anything later on without being destroyed for it.
Lastly, and this relates to stock only,do you get smoke coming from the top of it in game?,just like you do with ship funnels.I ask because I havent seen the device in game yet, only in a few books of mine.
Cheers

Welcome aboard Alopezh http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/welcome.gif
I'm going to presume your playing SH3 stock/vanilla.
If this is the case then your snorkel will be detectable (especially by aircraft) because of the latter year availability and the obvious availability of centimetric radar by to the Allies.
If I were you I'd consider trying GWX3.0 because that comes ready equipped with a Late War Sensors and Snorkel Antennas mod.
The above will equip you with the following:
FuMB-3 Bali (Type VII and IX) from Oct44. Detection range/radar warning approx 7.5km
FuMB-37 Leros (Type XXI) from Jan45. Detection range/radar warning approx 9.5km

Jim,
Did the Schnorkel also have a warning reciever on it? I never knew that,I would have thought with the waves coming close to the top of the tube sometimes this would have interfered with the reception of the reciever :hmmm:

Do you recall the saying below...often used on such occasions in a joking fashion (as on this occasion) :DL

Per this site, http://www.uboat.net/technical/schnorchel.htm (http://www.uboat.net/technical/schnorchel.htm), it looks like the snorkel was not available for operational u-boots until early 1944.
This of course does not explain why the renown value changes. I wonder if this is to show when the prototype was available? Still, I don't know how that works into the equation and at what point are we able to use a prototype + its reliability.

If rquired in GWX3.0...the dates are as stated above.
TBH I wouldn't get hung up on the finest of details. The game engine is nearing 4 years of age and as a natural consequence, great limitations continue to be imposed on modification developments.
I do not want you to take this statement as an afront because it is meant in a respectful context, but the more you 'rivet count' will only more than likely detract from your enjoyment of the game.
I honestly think there is a thin line between historical accuracy and game immersion....the trick is IMHO, getting the balance right.
