View Full Version : 3 knots drift..?

While cruising eastwards in the North-Western Approaches a Hunt came on a crossing course. The weather was extremely bad so we didn't dive, just cut the engines and let him pass a few clicks ahead. Then comes the funny stuff. Even if we had cut the engines the knot indicator still showed 3 knots. This lasted for a long time - like an hour or so. If this is to illustrate wind/sea drift I am impressed by the game. Problem is we had the sea/wind against us.....

Of course, we could be drifting backwards. Anybody experienced this...?

You are correct in assuming it is down to the drifting action.

The game has never allowed for sea state/wind (funnel smoke example) unfortunately.

The quickest way to stop the drift is to throw your engines into reverse....stopping them when you approach 0 knots.

Lots of times I will do my own navigation with no Navigator. If you do not check, and adjust, your course frequently you can have drift problems. Once after three scotch & sodas I was D.I.D. by collision.

Thank you, Jim! Not that the drift was a problem - just got curious. After all, there is fuel to be saved......:hmmm:.......if not drifting backwards....

You might actually be glad of some drift behind you if trying to sneak through St.of.Gib,just like in Das Boot :03:
Is this possible in the game?,can you allow the current to push you through for prolonged periods? :hmmm:

Not possible....no underwater currents, coupled with the fact that the passage is too long and you'd run out of oxygen in the process.

Bugger

Even though it isnt modelled in the game, would a SURFACE current be enough to push a UBoat through at night?

Cheers Jim

Nope....besides there are a multitude of surface patrols.

Forgot about the surface patrols :nope: ,guess it would be like a circus up there on top.

Currents looks like another thing to put on the wish list to the Devs for SH5. :yep:

You may be right there FW :yep:

At least where the currents are very important like gibraltar, channels, narrow straits and others like a storms
