View Full Version : Depth to Ocean Floor?

I'm an SH3 noob, but I really enjoyed SH2 back in the day. I've noticed that there's no ocean floor indicator on the map or the depth gauge the way there was in SH2. Am I missing something? Is there a way to find how deep I can dive without hitting the floor? (Do I need to find an IRL map, and if so, does SH3 correspond to real life depths?)

Another curiosity: On the realisim setting page, the final checkbox on the right hand side has no text explaining what it does. Is this a bug or is this some sort of spoiler prevention? (I think I'm running 1.4)

Thanks.

You can always ask your navigation officer to give you a reading from the fathomometer. I forget the shortcut command. Or ping it yourself from the control room. ;) That'll give you the depth easy.

Welcome aboard,

I do not know about the realism settings page, but about hitting the ocean floor; go to the Navigator and choose 'Depth Under Keel'. That will come in handy.

oops, Torplexed beat me to it. That's what happens when you forget to hug your submarine.

I think the poor Seaview got hugged or mugged in about every other episode of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. ;)

Welcome aboard jimmyv http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/welcome.gif

The depths in SH3 bare no resemblence to the real world...they tend to change in increments to an eventual maximum of 'over 1000 metres'.

Don't you think it would be good if we had a reinforced glass underside?,so we could marvel at the abyss? :ping:

I don't remember the original key (if there was one). I mapped it to the numberpad #5 like this:

[Cmd130]
Name=Get_depth_under_sub_keel
Ctxt=1
MnID=0x3F250005
Key0=0x65,c,"CTRL NumPad 5"

..but don't do this whilst the enemy is around. I understand they can hear your ping too!

IRL, yes.

I've been told that in the game the Echolot is not detectable by the enemy.

I decided to test it once, I'd snuck in quietly close to some escorts without being noticed, made sure they didn't know I was sat there and tried pinging a few times to see if they'd hear. They just carried on sailing on without hearing a thing. Well till I let off a few eels any way! :cool:

The escorts can not hear you pinging....which is a pity I suppose, but there you are, we work with what we've got. Similar to asdic/sonar being able to detect things through the other side of land masses http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pissedoff.gif

Arrrggghhh!!!! My fault I suppose for not asking the question earlier (or, perhaps missing the comment previously on the forum). How I'd wished to know how far I could push the boat before running aground and not dared to ping the bottom for fear of waving the "here I am!!" flag..

But thanks.. that is indeed very good to know.

EDIT... along the same lines I suppose, but it makes sense to ask the question here: Radio reports to KM HQ (even late war)...do they give away your position/draw in the hunters?

Yes, sending a radio transmisson increases the chance of detection, or at least of aircraft showing up in your vicinity.

But only of consideration if your within the base air range.
