I ran into the Yamoto in a task group, fired all I had, 7 torps for hits set with magnetic exploders. A few internal explosions, settled by the starboard bow, engines dead. Hung around for a day, escorts left the area--loyal bunch aren't they?

Decided to surface about 6000 yards and give it a try with my deck gun, kind of like trying to down a brown bear with a pellet rifle. The Japanese crew seemed to resent that act, they opened up with all they had, a very impressive sight but I decided it was best viewed from the scope so I dived. After a bit a escort returns, battery running low so I had to clear the area. What a shame. Was a small fire on board, maybe she sank anyway.

Oh man...just one more. I probably would have kept reloading my game save previous to that point until I sank it :damn:.

I just sunk the Yamato for the first time. After luring 3 destroyers into a narrow passage where they sunk themselves :yep: I was free to attack the stationary convoy. It took about 8 torpedos to sink Yamato. I set the depth at 35ft then a bit deeper as it sunk lower in the water.

The Yamato was sitting in Truk harbor with 2 Kongos and a Fuso. The Fuso went down with 1 torpedo set at 25ft and the Kongos took 2 each, leaving me with none. It worked out very nicely.

Nice work! So, apparently Truk is a good place to bag a Yamato? :hmm2:

Yes, in fact it was your advice from one of my previous threads that led me to finding Yamato. Without giving away the fun (unless you want me to because I made a detailed record of the event)...it was in '43...the convoy was stationary in the deeper part of the harbor very near the docks of Truk. Of course destroyers were everywhere like angry bees. But they are easily dispatched.

But yeah...you were right, after a few unsuccessful trips to Truk, this last time she was there.

I was going to go back to my Yamato thread, to thank you for the intel :salute:

I have been to Truk a couple of times, never saw anything except heavy air cover. I'll try it again one day.

Yeah...it was like that for me too. But one day, on my way to my next objective, I slid over to Truk again, and there it was.

I've never seen Yamato at Truk, but have seen Ise's and plenty of CA's and assorted other ships.

Seems in 43 Truk always has the Yamato, Fuso, ect. Easy pickens for the points. If you plan to sink it, take a full load and use what's needed before you attack another.

I got so mad. I actually ran into a fast moving Yamato TF in 160 deep of water. I got 8 in it my first salvo and stopped it dead in the water, but 4 dd's in shallow water not a good thing. I put a few more in the Y, listing, but not sinking. The dd's made some good runs. My only chance was to hide under the Y. I did, but then it exploded once, so I hit flank speed. I made it at least 300 yards away at 160 feet when it exploded and sunk.
It blew me up........

Armistead... that is so crazy. I played possum under a burning merchie not long ago. Different results tho... eventually I slipped off safely. LOL

What kind of sub are you using? You can add more torpedos if you want...

I've given up saying that. 'Cause if I had one more fish, it'd probably be another dud. :wah:

not just that but often even when smoking with small fires the yamato will take 2 or 3 or more fish to sink.

and waiting makes this worse, i have only my opinion but it seems if you wait between shots to guage the result it can take an extra 2 or 3 fish because the ships recover somewhat. not sure if they get credit for damage control but it sure seems like it.

try it one time, send 2 or 3 fish and wait, then send 2 or 3 more and wait, then repeat and i bet you need 12 torps to sink her almost every time but if you just send 6 or 7 fish she will quite often sink on the spot or only need 1 or 2 to finish her.
