As awesome as this game is and I do live this game. I can't help but to want for a naval war game focused around Surface warfare.

Can anyone suggest a game like this that is as good as SH4

While I don't know much about such games, I have heard of a newer game coming out soon.
It is called Battlestations Pacific, and it is supposed to be a sort of a strategy game that involves not just surface combat, but also includes air power.

I looked up the site for you.
The videos in their video section look interesting.
It may or may not be what you are looking for.

Cool thanks. I will go check it out. What I am looking for is a game that plays like SH4 but uses Serface ships

Probably the closest one I can think of lately would have been Destroyer Command which came out back in 2002 and was the sister game to the U-Boat simulator SH2. There were a few that came out in the 1990s like Fighting Steel. A more recent one is Jutland which covers World War One surface combat. You can read Neal Steven's review here.

However, no surface ship simulator is going to be quite the same experience as SH4. In a surface ship you rarely have the same independence as in a submarine or a fighter plane with the ability to make your own decisions. Your ship is usually a single component of a fleet, formation or squadron and your movements have to conform with those of others. You more often play admiral than captain if you want to control events. A destroyer is about the largest ship where you still get some autonomy. About the only exception would be a solitary surface raider like the battleship Bismarck briefly was, but those circumstances were rather rare.

If you're going for a bit of nostalgia you might wanna check out the 'Great Naval Battles' series. It got quite a bit of criticism during it's time but is loved amoung the naval sim community, I think ;).

You would have to play it in DOS-Box, the first part (dealing with the Atlantic theatre) is legally available for free on abandonia.com.

I played Battlestations Midway a lot. Actually, it was a fairly good game, just didn't get support. The online play was rather fun. I hope the Pacific game will be much better.

... at least in SH3 to be doing the Destroyer Command thing (i.e. commanding a destroyer and using sonar and depth charges to try and hunt down the U-boats etc).
I know this is an old topic but that (at least from the U-boat aspect) would have been the icing on the cake for the SH3 side. Wasn't Destroyer Command supposed to be linked into a sub game at one point so that you could do just that (i.e. play either sub or tincan skipper online etc).
I think I'd grab a copy of Destroyer Command just to cut my chops on trying to find, hunt, destroy a U-boat (I'm assuming the game modelled that).

Destroyer Command was designed to multiplay with Silent Hunter 2 online. However, from what I heard it was never an ideal setup. The game did model hunting submarines (German and Japanese) among other things like surface and air escort battles.

That's right, SH 2. I remember waiting in anticipation for that combo to arrive but forgot why it never came to pass.

I still think that SH3 with the Destroyer Command aspect would be huge but admittedly for a particular audience! That would make for serious online play. With all the emphasis on online flying squadrons and online FSP squads it would be a real treat to see an online wolfpack vs an online convoy escort etc. Admittedly this would have to be designed in such a way to take into account the time aspect given that stalking a convoy takes a helluva lot longer than your usual online 'shooter' or flying game. The only way around that would be an ability to save an online game and be able to pick up where you left off on another day etc (there I go, thinking out loud again,LOL).

SH3 online was a novelty at first but didn't have the appeal (the clunky connectivity GUI etc didn't help at all).
I know SHIV has an online aspect to it but it's never seemed to work for me and I haven't really seen anything great posted about it. Besides it's just not the concept I was hoping for.

I remember a cheezy little game back in the days of DOS called Wolfpack which let you play one or the other (I think there was a screenshot of that oldie on subsim a while back).

I remember "Wolfpack" very well. USed to love that game when it was first released.

Sort of adding to what the OP was saying, I want a good surface game as well. Jutland, BS: Pacific don't really scratch the itch because they are strategy games. What I am looking for (and I think was the sentiment of the OP) is a game where you are the Captain of ONE ship, just like in the SH series.

I do happen to know that the only option right now is older games or modded SHIV which is why I did not ask myself.

They never make the game I would like.. I am still hoping for a helicopter sim that is war-based but not as a direct combatant. (ie. Ambulance birds in Korea, Vietnam etc and troop transport into hot-zones..)
