Sorry everyone,
I gave it my best shot. I bought SH4, played it. Downloaded several Fleet Boat mods, played them. Downloaded Operation Monsun, played it. Tweaked, fiddled and fussed. But I just can't make SH4 "feel" the same as SH3. SH4 is a technically superior piece of software, of that I have no doubt. But SH3 is what it is, the very best WW2 North Atlantic naval experience available on the PC, period. I reinstalled my old copy yesterday, downloaded GWX gold and am already on patrol number 2.
It feels good to be home.
Peace.
Different people, different opinions. :) I feel the same, just the other way around. Even though I own both, only SH4 has a permanent place on my hard drive. Evey now and then I install SH3, but after a while I cannot resist the call of the Pacific.

I personally prefer the Pacific, but I think SH3 has more atmosphere. Cooped up in that small CT, shouting orders directly at your men (rather than clicking in the command bar).
No one said you can just play only one of them. Just switch every now and then. :yep:

Sorry everyone
Don't feel you have to apologize. Different strokes for different folks. I remember when SH2 came out we had similar messages where people said they were going back to good old Aces of the Deep because SH2 felt uncompelling to them. ;) But then SH2 was a bit of a dud.

Hey, at least you gave it a try. Did you try the mod that has the SH3 colors? That just might be the mood setter for you in SH4. :03:

Skookum;
I would agree that SH3, particularly with the GWX mods has a certain something that really captures the North Atlantic/U-boat atmosphere/immersion (pun intended). In it's current form it's a great game.
Having said that I thoroughly enjoy SH4 and plying the Pacific with my Fleet Boat (I really don't like the U-boat part of SH4 at all).
While I spend most of my gaming time with SH4 with the USN I regularly switch to the Kriegsmarine for the challenge of the North Atlantic.
I'm just glad we have such a great choice and I hope TMO and/or RFB evolve to the level that GWX has achieved.

Guess I'm gonna have to try SH3. After the Uboat missions is SH4, I assumed SH3 would be the same. Sounds like it's a totally different game.

Both are really great games. I had trouble with SH3 because it kept forgetting my careers, especially after I had 30 days of playing time invested in them, but the gameplay was great.
SH4 will never have the feel of SH3, but it is also true that SH3 will never have the feel of SH4. It's just wrong to judge one by the standards of the other. "I just can't make SH4 "feel" the same as SH3" reveals an inflexible attitude similar to the guys at SubSoWesPac who kept judging SH4 by SH1 standards. No game will EVER be like another and it's wrong to expect it to be unless your intention is that all progress and innovation to stop. I don't think that's what you really want.
Let the games stand on their own merits. Neither one has to make any apologies to the other. Either one alone would be my favorite computer game.

I go both ways!
Uh I mean I play both games.
But I can understand your feelings. For me, there is a "magic" about SH3 and something just not comfortable with SH4 (which I think is due to the GUI).
But, hey, these are just games. Play SH3 until you want to play SH4 and then go back to SH3 when the whim hits ya! :yeah:

Yup, if you haven't tried SH3 with the GWX mod I'd highly recommend it. As Rockin Robbing stated they are two different games in two different theatres of war. I think you'll find SH3 depicts the U-boat fight in the North Atlantic very well indeed. You'll be hooked after your first crash dive and hearing "Alaaaaaaaaaaaaarrm!!!" being screamed in your headphones.
Conversely I think SH4 (I use TMO) does the same justice to the Pacific with the USN fight.
I'm pretty sure you'll find yourself switching back and forth between the two games, LOL.
I think a different feel of SH3 doesn't come from the game engine or the game itself. It's more because you go with different expectations into the Atlantic theater campaign, probably still hearing voices from some accordings movies in the back of your head. And what makes SH3 feel differently are those associations connected to the imagination of both sides of the war. Also can movies, books or other media shift those expactations and images into both directions.
Talking gamewise both games are pretty similar with one becoming harder and harder as you go on playing and the other one becoming easier.
Yeah, for me also SH3 in its current status (NYGM3, GWX3) has something special when playing with U-Boats that the U-Boat part of SH4 simply doesn't provide.
That said, the fleet boats part of SH4 is to me as compelling and fantastic as SH3 is to german U-Boats. I feel SOOOO LUCKY to be able to have one good sim per theatre ... :yeah:
And with GWX 4 there will be both in one program
