View Full Version : Convoy Routes Around Late 1940/Early 1941?

My game is currently in the November of 1940. I have been trying to find an OG convoy (around the Straits of Gibraltar,) however after spending about a week patrolling the area between Spain and Africa, I have found only a patrol craft, a sail boat, and a couple of neutral large cargo ships. I have gotten a few hydrophone contacts, but all of them seem to disappear in the middle of nowhere. I have gone about a month and a half in the game and sunk nothing but a tramp steamer.

I am using GWX 3.0 and SH3 Commander. Any suggestions on what I should do to increase my tonnage? Thanks.

There's a decent map of convoy routes at the top left of your chart,
Find a decent intersection, make sure you have a decent guy in the radio chair and patrol

I reckon putting yourself closer to the strait of Gibraltar would increase your chances of intercepting a bit of traffic, but don't get too close to the opening obviously, you want to be in position to intercept them coming in and out at a reasonable distance. In effect you are trying to find chokepoints on the map,and manipulate them to the fullest.

I have'nt been near the med for many months now.

Near to the straights of Gibraltar is a good spot for traffic, but watch out for Royal Navy patrols, and the occasional air patrol.

Station yourself 250 clicks west of Gibraltar and the traffic will come to you....just a little patience is needed at times like in RL, the Kaleuns would often go a few weeks or more without any sightings http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/pirate.gif

Hope this helps you. You can click the upper left for a specific convoy in the OG group to see the list of ships.

I think it's the radioman that's causing the problem. I had no idea the radioman did anything before I got radar, so I just have a raw bootsman in his seat. I will finish up this patrol and train a radioman, and hopefully I will get more contact reports.

Wait... if you have a trained radioman will you get more contacts?

Always the first qualification I award http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

Well, I waited 250 km west of the Straits, and lo and behold, within five minutes realtime, a large convoy came along.

I tried to attack by going to silent running, pointing right at the convoy, going to 150m, and standing still. When I detected the front guard pass over me (warships at approximately 3 o-clock and 9'o clock) I ordered the boat to periscope depth. Unfortunately, I must have come up too slow, as by the time I got to periscope depth, the entire convoy was out of sight behind me, and I had the pleasure of evading a two frigate rear guard.

I have heard the tactic I used being used many times on this board, but it seems I can't ascend fast enough to get inside the convoy. Any ideas?

Go in at PD, Silent running,
Take the fore escort down one flank at approx 1000m
If he misses you then you have time to pick and choose the juciest part of the convoy

If he see's you then its time to use that T1 you had spun up on the fast setting in your fore tube

Do you mean I should sink the front escort? That doesn't seem very realistic...

Only if it spots you, otherwise try to slip past un noticed

you could even attack surfaced at night (better deck awash), just be careful of the radars

Well your half way there....one small step at a time...I'm sure the armchair admirals will get you sorted :03:

Always the first qualification I award http://www.psionguild.org/forums/images/smilies/wolfsmilies/thumbsup.gif

Prior to equipping your sub with radar, is this worth the cost? How hard can it be for a guy to receive and send radio reports?

The first qualification I give is for the hydrophone operator but it doesn't seem to do much good. I often have my operator tell me "no contacts" when I can hear a ship plain as day if I listen myself.

I tend to swap him between the radio and phones....there are fewer of the "no contacts" reports after he is awarded the qualification.
