View Full Version : How to get into scapa flow?

I'm trying the scapa flow mission and I am being detected by destroyers even submerged with no periscope. What's the trick? The waters around there are so shallow that there is sometimes only 7 meters under your keel.

BTW, on my chart, scapa flow doesn't have a harbor.

Honestly, I don't think trying to get into Scapa from the South is worth it. As you mentioned very shallow water and a pretty good screen of ASW.
Every time I have tried getting in to it, I get detected and then life gets a bit "sporty"

You don't have to infiltrate Scapa Flow to sink a battleship. If you hang around one of the entrances in deeper water they tend to appear if you wait about long enough. I caught the Hood that way once, Too bad I didn't have enough torpedoes to finish off the Nelson class BB that was with her.

what side of the flow do you find tends to have more battleships come through? east or west?

The South entrance....
They don't really have much business in the North Sea though. I would say that the the area West of Scapa should have more activity in general.

Though a bit unrealistic, my technique for evading pesky frigates in Scapa involves inviting them into shallow water to dance and letting the over zealous skippers ground their boats as they attempt to ram my submarine.
Cruise close to shore with just enough water under you to stay submerged without scraping bottom. Make lots of noise. The escort will line you up and punch it. Hit flank speed as late as you dare (ever play chicken with a train?) and if you time it right he'll scrape past your quarter deck and end up on the beach like a stranded whale. Then you can laugh at him as his propellors grab mud and rocks while he tries to reverse himself off the shore.
Resist the urge to surface and moon the hapless frigate crew. They are still armed to the teeth and will shoot to kill. Just pray you saved enough battery power to get out of scapa submerged and you're good to go.
Happy hunting.

In GWX Scarpa can be easily penitrated from either the east Pren entry or the west (in stock I think only the west approach is available),
Entry from the south is suicide

I play GWX3 + OLC and the east approaches seem blocked by sunken ships blocking both gaps.
Did I miss a small opening I can sneak through. :hmmm:

get in from west ,watch out the mine when you r to get in the channel ,keep the speed in "ahead 1/3",when u r close to the sonar range of a DD ,ahead slow

I dont know if they changed it from 2.1. But on that version there is a small opening between the blocking ships on the east. Its not very hard to get through on surface at night.

Here's a link to the British report about the mission and at the end is a course map of how it was done. And they did navigate through block ships from the east.

It is doable, entry from the east with decks awash. I've never spotted anything worth doing is. You better try to get into Gibraltar, knowing the Nelson lays at the end waiting for your eels :arrgh!:

Okay, I snuck into scapa flow from the west by hugging the coast. I lined up the Battleship Revenge and put several fish into her. She was on fire and low in the water, but not sunk.
Problem was, there was no escape. I had destroyers coming at me from both escape directions. And with only about 5 meters of water under my keel, there was nothing I could do. Heavy flooding was the cause of death.
How does one escape a harbor with no place to hide?

Don't stick around to admire your handywork, fire the eels from around 1km away on slow and then sneek off on slient running back towards the enterance whilst they are running
Once clear of the search you can stop and reload before going back in if you like
Also for large warships aim for magnetic shots under the turrets objective is to ignight the magazines and blow the ships up,
In harbours it is common for large ships to settle on the bottom, without being sunk, blowing them up is the best way of destroying them.
no points for a damage in this game :(
