Kaleun Hans Bauer - U 51
2nd Flotilla
Hey everyone, I don't know if anyone besides the GWX members here remember me, but I used to be somewhat active in the community about a year and a half ago, then I kind of dropped off due to life concerns, but im trying to get back into it now.
I started a Dead is dead career earlier, I think its a good first step, Im going to document it here.
Now because of a glitch I don't have any screenshots of my action in the first patrol, but it was pretty successful, snuck into a convoy and it had a Light Cruiser! I managed to destroy it with 2 fish, and one missed but hit a small merchant in the convoy, which sunk later. :yeah: Escape was all but easy. :ping: The rest of the patrol was rather uneventful, some single merchant sinkings.

Its too bad the game glitched my save game so those tons were not counted on the top U boat aces list, which still says 0 for Captain Hans Bauer.

Doesnt matter what is says, you know the truth, and truth means 32981 tons less for those damn Tommies.
Nice job! :yep:

@Packerton
That's very bad luck! I think this must be an awful feeling to lose such a high tonnage at this way.

The rest of the reports will be written from the perspective of my boats Sonar Man, Peter Weller, to make things more interesting. :ping:
If you guys reading find it too boring, (im not a very good story writer, I never wanted to do this at first) just tell me and Ill stop and make my entries more to the point.
2nd patrol went all too well, with probly my best escape ever not a single ping, or idea where I was. 53000 or so tons sunk, all merchants this time.
Enjoy!
"War Journal: Entry 1, November 2nd,1939 "
"My name is Peter Weller of the 2nd Flotilla based in Wilhelmshaven, I am a Stabsobootsmen on board the U-51,my qualified and current position is the Sonar, or hydrophone man as the crew called me before we got to know each other."
"I am writing this in the hopes that one day someone Might read it when all this is over, I must admit right now this was not my first war patrol, we returned home from that one about a month ago, but our Oberleutant Hans Bauer or, Kaluen as we address him, said to us its bad luck to write about the first patrol, hes very supersticious."
"We departed on the 2nd patrol after shore leave on the 2nd of october, our assignment was to patrol the AN grid in the position 23 on our maps, I never knew much about maps, it was not my field anyway."
"En route our crew had our first bout of enemy attack experience, a single British aircraft attacked us, being the over confident group we were at the time, after our successful first patrol, Kaluen ordered Adolf Manfried, one of our low ranking watchmen, to man the flak gun and engage it. The next thing I cant remember very well, the boat rocked extremely hard and I was apparently knocked out for 10 minutes, as Our Radio man, Heinrich Bernard, was the one who woke me up. He told me that the plane dropped an air bourne depth charge and it just barely missed, we lucked out with only minor deck damage, which we repaired several hours later on the surface. I had hoped somebody would be more conservative next time."
"Heinrich is a good man, we quickly befriended one another due to our close proximity on duty, hes a wierd one though, an air of unluckyness and odd behaviours seem to follow him, but its probly just me and my worries."
"The highlight of this patrol was our attack on a Convoy in the BE sector, where our Kaluen rerouted to after not running into a ship for days, hes a very impatient man, but noone argues with him. We approached the convoy from its front under the cover of night, the sound of a destroyer on my hydrophone makes me extremely uneasy, any second it could speed up, in which I know it has found us. However fortune favored us this time, we snuck inside the convoy under the cover of night and our Kaluen ordered a 4 tube spread of our remaining torpedoes to be fired down the middle of the convoy, we scored 2 hits as I remember fondly over my hydrophone and the next noise told me the that the tanker we saw on periscope had exploded, it was our only confirmed sinking of the attack."
"I dont even think they knew what hit them, we quietly dived to 100 meters and the escort destroyers never even got close to us, Ive never been more thankful in my life."
"When we returned, we were welcomed with a celebration of our successful patrol, at the time our Kaluen was the top U boat Captain with 70000 tons of warship and Merchant shipping to his boats name, our entire crew was awarded the U boat Combat Badge, and the Kaluen awared myself, our Chief engineer Oscar Beckenbluer and our Chief Torpedoman Joseph Richtoven the Iron cross 2nd class, he personally commended me on my expert hydrophone usage, that allowed us to find the targets and escape the convoy efficiently, he also promoted me along with 3 other members, which gives me my current rank"

I like the style, more from an ordinary crewman's point of view, more concerned and just a tad unsure of himself, just how I would expect him to be really:03:. Very good, you should keep this up:salute::salute::salute:
