View Full Version : Letting off some Steam...

Last night, after avoiding it for some time I finally 'subscribed' to steam.

I only did it to get the demo for Empire Total War. A title I was considering buying. The demo is available 'exclusively' from steam

So after dealing with filling out information, downloading updates, updateing the updates, rebooting, yadda yadda I was finally ready to download the demo for ETW.

The download took a bit of time but nothing unreasonable 1/2 hour or so. Getting all excited I go to run the demo, a few update files flash by and theres the starting screen..... wait.... wait... wait some more. Reboot. Okay maybe I dident wait long enough. Start the game again... and wait and wait I set a stop watch and waited at least 5 minutes of watching the opening splash screen.

So now Im stuck with a demo that doesent work (probably not going to get the game now) and freakin steam that starts up every time I start my machine. Yea thats what I need is more processes running espically intrusive and snoopy ones.

BTW there is no 'unistall' option for steam. Tonight Im going to get rid of the startup calls, manually remove steam and the demo and probably spend hours cleaning up the registry and .dll calls.

Thanks for nothing steam I hope you shrivel up and die. I hate the concept. If I want something patched Ill go get the g.d. patch myself.

Wha? You can uninstall Steam, I did when I had to switch it to the other drive

To stop steam and any other starting up when you start windows:

Ctr+Alt+Del
File
New Task
Type 'msconfig'
OK
'Startup' tab
Unckeck the check box next to the program name
Apply the changes
Reset the PC

You can also go through the control panel and remove it via the add/remove programmes.

There's actually an option to make Steam not start with windows in the Steam's settings tab. Settings->Interface->Uncheck 'Run Steam on Windows start'. :03:

I know about all the above. What grates me is I have to do some of the above after recieving nothing for my time and troubles.

So your all cool with some third party web applet managing your drm?

If it doesn't work, most chances are the fault is in your computer, rather than in Steam

Also, Steam isn't some sort of DRM, it doesn't spy on your computer or limit your game installations to a certain number

Or just right click on the steam icon in your bar, go to options, and deselect the start on system start up.

Just realized Dowly already said it.

Steam is actually quite a good program. I uninstalled steam the other day without problems. Planning on installing it again soon, because that is where my company of heroes was bought.

I've used Steam for a few different games and can honestly say it has never been problematic for me :hmmm:

Call me strange but there is just something about steam that creeps me out.

Anyhow figured out it was a firewall issue.

Wether or not it was steam or the demo that had the issue is yet to be determined.

Have only had a brief glimpse of the demo now.

Anyhow.. thanks for the inputs. :salute:

Same here...I've been using Steam ever since HL2 came out back in '04...it's been nothing but wonderful to me. Makes it real easy to move games from one machine to another.

Same, been using it for a few years, never had any problems except that downloads are always a tad too slow for me

Oh, you're still alive?
