After many campaings at the helm of the Type VII, i decided to go with a Type 9 as early as possible for the extra ammunition. On my first patrol I ended up at Scapa flow around April 1940. Sneaked my way in through a side channel, sunk the more valuable ships (50k tons with 6 torpedoes) and slowly made my way out. I always fear CTD's so I saved often, once at the entrance, once in the middle of teh port, end then once as I am nearing the exit. I got out of Scapa, went to 512X, then BAM! crash to destkop. Loaded the last save, 10 seconds of gameplay then CTD. Loaded the previous, CTD. Loaded the first one (just before entering), no more CTD. And this isn't the first time this happens, it happend on every trip to Scapa. I never have this problem in other ports.

Not related, but here's another bug I've noticed. Patroling near Liverpool I picked up the trail of a convoy, overtook it and sneaked my way to it's middle. 6 torpedoes fired in 30 seconds which sunk 1 Ore Carrier and 2 Empire Freighters. I waited for the convoy to pass, overtook them again after a few hours, and sunk two C2 Medium Merchants. As I waited for the convoy to pass again I noticed on the map two big weird looking Map Contacts between Liverpool and the convoy. They were stated as Unknown and had a circle around them. I decided to investigate but as I was nearing the area of interception I couldn't hear anything and the Watch crew was silent. I went to the bridge and I found a row of 3 unescorted ships about 6000m away: 1 Ore Carrier and 2 Empire Freighters. I sunk them with my remaining torpedoes but altough they all properly sank (one even broke in 2), I never recieved the "She's going down message" and my tonnage remained unchanged. As I was preparing to leave the area 2 more merchant appeared out of the blue, following the same course, 2 C2 Freighters. I sank one with my remaining torpedo, still no kill. Then as i was trying to leave the Irish sea, anywhere i went, I ran into the same old convoy, circling around the exit.
This hasn't happened before but I never attaked a convoy so close to it's departure port. Any thoughts?
I use GWX 3 and a few interface/sound addons.

Used to see this alot on my old computer,
Usually it appeared to be related to the graphics card not being up to handling some of the bigger explosions,

However occasionaly it was just random,

Like you I got into the habit of regular saves, however I named them in sequence and never overwrote,
so PT1, PT2, PT3 and so on, in that way if I had an issue I could always roll back not too far.

Since I upgraded my PC I've not had the issue

So suggestions,

1) Check your graphics drivers are up to date
2) run rolling saves,
3) Make sure when saving you are
i) on the surface
ii) more than 30km from any ship

I think I know what your second problem (I have never experienced it, but I read about it): if you save near sinking/sunken ships [by you] they can after you reload your save game re-appear and if you sink them you won't get the tonnage.

Never save while submerged or within 50km of land or any object: aircraft or ships. H-J is correct; sunken ships can respawn if you save right after sinking them. Again, save at least 50km from your last sinking. It can be inconvenient sometimes but this is the only workaround that I know of.

Not sure if you know this already but don't use the Surface Attack or Surface Cruise buttons in the Crew Management screen. Using these buttons probably will result in a ctd. No solution to this bug except to move your people around manually.

Hope this helps...

Damn my silly memory. I forgot to subscribe to the thread :nope:. Jeez, and I even started a new thread about it .

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, it seems that saving at less than 30 km from a sunken ship is a bad ideea. If the water is too shallow, the save bugs. Any subsequent save will share the same fate. It's not about the land mass, as I can load saves perfectly. For example I always save when i start a mission and I never had problems with those. However, the respawning convoy ships did not appear after a load. On convoy runs I never save before the DDs go beyond visual range because of the "surfaced at 20m below" bug. Yet the bug happened on each and every covoy, sometimes even after a few hours. I spied 2 ships, previously sunk as they rejoined the convoy (from a 90 degree angle, imagine the sight of all the other ships dodging for their lives). After that they were sunkable again :arrgh!:.

I experienced this a lot earlier but since always starting up a patrol through SH Commander it hasn't happened. When it happened it was always (I think) after prolonged submerged action.
