What I love about this place other than SHIII news is that people here are free to express there opinions and say pretty much just about anything.

This is democracy in action! There are limits on cursing and personal attacks but all else is open for discussion in a world where more and more issues are off limits.

So Neal, a big thanks for your tolerance of us nuts bickering about the Communist Left and the Nazi right, about gays and straights, about Christians and Muslems and Jews.

I think I would vote you for president!

Thanks again Neal and long live Subsim!:yeah:

I don't think anyone has any problems with opinions here. It is just when some people post opinions and insist that they are facts that gets people worked up.

Opinions and differences in opinions usually are not causing problems here. The tone in which they are being given, and the behavior of the individual giving them - that is what is causing problems, eventually.

Whenever I have problems with somebody, it rarely is because of the first, and almost always because of the latter.

Free speech? How rude

First you let people have free speech, and the next thing you know, they ask you to have democracy and equal rights...

I say this must be stamped out, now!

Neal has been quite tolerant of political discussion but an extreme small subset of those involved have lately thrown any kind of PC out the window and started using racist and derogatory remarks in their titles and posts.

This is not going to bode well for the future of politics discussion on Subsim.

Well, here is the thing Zachstar, members do not have to visit the thread. That is the beauty of it. Look at it like 4 channels you have to choose from. One channel is broadcasting something you like to watch, the other three are broadcasting material you detest. Just change the channel! I do not visit all the threads. Nor do I respond to threads that I do visit. Normally, the first original post is enough to determine if you are interested or have something of value to add. If not, move on to the next. If it looks like "one of those threads:doh:" move on. Remember, no one can find fault if you state the facts in any discussion. Keep it plan and simple. Keep out words that provoke.

The thing here is not moderators or SS rules....it is ALL about the members. Adult conversation without the grade school name calling. Adult discussions with agreement and disagreements. In the end though and for the most part, a general understanding of participants views are taken, digested and accepted. Not always everyone's view but that is what makes up human. Jim Buna likes red colors. I like blue colors. I do not call Jim names because he likes red colors because Jim said red colors are his favorite because his car is red. Ok Jim, cool. I understand why you like red colors. (just an example Jim. I do not know what colors you like). It is over simplified example but none-the-less, is exactly why the forums for the most part stay civil and relaxed. Sure, there is always an uprising(usually during the full moon) but in the end, the participants get over it and move on. So again, it is the members who make it great. The rest of it is just background noise.

So what you're saying is that Jim is a red lover?

Even in the past when we have had highly disruptive members, now
banned, it never got too rowdy.
I would like to think that the slow pace of naval game attracts gentle
temperaments to the forum.

The Admins maintain the base standard of behaviour required, the
community maintains widely accepted standard of behaviour expected
and individuals maintain their own individual levels of decency. All as it
should be.

Yes. subsim is one of those rare forums that have a good bunch in as a community... I also believe that subsims age has helped it get down a base for how things are surspose to be, and the variety of people with different outlooks on things.

Thanks for the forum Neal.

I personally like this place, it provides me with alot of opinions and arguments that makes me understand the virtue of, what in norway would be called, conservative right wing politics. Its hard so hard to see this side of american politics in europe, mostly its bush was evil/stupid Obama is grate, this forum provides me with a second imput. Thank you subsim!

A naval forum would be a place one would expect thoughtful and reasonable thoughts?

Cmon - we are people that like to blow stuff up - digitally but nonetheless!
We like history - which is filled with lots of periods where other people blew stuff up - interrupted by a lot of boring periods in between - before the blowing up stuff started all over again.

And you expect peaceful civility??????
