depth noises in GWX

Just curious...when underwater in GWX, as shallow as 20m, I get metal creaking noises. Is that just ambiance? Or can DD hear it?

If any of you have played Morrowind, the creaking noise is the same one from the interiors of Dwemer ruins.

I'm pretty sure I read in the SH3 manual about depth pings giving away your presents...
