Im using Silent Hunter 3 V1.4 bought 3 weeks ago.

I am getting verry confused about all the patches and downloads mentioned in this forum.

Which patches/downloads would you recomend.

As far as Grey Wolves expansion, what are the pros and cons? What do I actually get with it.

What are the drawbacks - raduz in his hydrophone hunting tutorial mentions:-
"Since there is a difference between stock game settings and GWX, as for range to contact reporting, I decided to use the stock game settings because they are more practical for purposes of this tutorial. This is the reason why you must replace the contacts.cfg file in the data folder by the contacts.cfgattached to this tutorial."
What does this mean?
Are there any other drawbacks from GWX?

Welcome aboard
Stock SH3 is rather simple; you should use it to get familiar with the game, and especially to do the Naval Academy.
After you have done this, download the 1.4b patch and install it.
Play this for a while, and then, if you are still interested, check out the super mods, of which there are several. GWX is one of these. NYGM is another good one; WAC another.

Sea Hawk, you are fully patched to the latest version DO NOT try to add any additional official updates/patches.

As for mods, there are 4 biggies which alter the entire game to make it more of a simulation. GWX, NYGM, WAC and Living Silent Hunter (sp?).

These supermods all have their own take on what was needed to make SH3 all that it could have been. Personally from my own involvement, I would choose GWX it's the all rounder that keeps the game requirements to a min.

Although you won't know if you like them until you try them.

As said above, if you have a recent version of the game trying to add patch 1.4b on top of it will just mess you up.

Harbors filled with ships coming and going. K-ships (blimps) escorting convoys late in the war. A much better visual experience. Much more realistic behavior from AI ships. All around a huge improvement on the game. But so are the others.

What are the drawbacks - raduz in his hydrophone hunting tutorial mentions:-

Only if you consider realism a drawback. I'm pretty sure Raduz used the stock settings because it's easier to explain it that way, not because it's better or more realistic.

And again as Danlisa said, try them all. You'll be amazed at the different ways folks have found to improve the game.
