View Full Version : Any Chance of Luftwaffe Support?

When, where and how quickly can I expect to get Luftwaffe support.
Obviously this would depend on the year and my location.
For example, if I’m stationed on the West Coast of France in 1940, how far out of Brest or some other point of the map, might the Luftwaffe fly out and how long should it take them to get there.
If I run into a convoy, how long should I trail them before hoping to have some air support?
What can we expect for each year? What can we expect off France, Norway and in the Med. Sea? Is there anywhere else they might show up?

From personal experience of Hermans fly boys you might just get some help near Norway when that all kicks off, anything else and you've got next to no chance, they are a waste of overated space, fat boys flying circus:nope:
As far as I know you can expect air support from Italian ally and Herman's lads in the Mediterranean Sea, but also in the French zone, Norway..

I can give you a decent answer on when to expect events to happen based on your location etc,its really no different to calculating where ships, convoys etc will be at a certain time.I don't know the exact speed of German bombers at this time, but I am guessing they are around 200-250kts?.I'm not sure, but if we use that figure for this example that would be fine I reckon.
Say you are about 500km west of France.Bomber is moving at 200kts minimum.
200x1.8=360km.This is how much distance he covers in 1 hr.If you divide 360km by two you get distance for half hour, which is 180km.180+360= 540km.You would expect to see the bomber in about 1.5 hrs time, give or take any problems/events along the way.
I am not sure if this was any help, but it does give you an idea of when to expect your support to arrive.I would stick to using increments of 0.5 hrs,as any lower than this and the calculations can get too complicated.
Regarding range, someone correct me here but most bombers have a max range of about 2000 miles?which is about 3200km?So if you were on the fringe of his range, and using the previous formula you would expect sightings after about 8hrs,which is very unlikely as he will have turned back long before then.
Let me just say,I havent seen the LW once in my campaign, and I am almost at the end of 42 :stare:

If yu are within visual range of a convoy and radio it's location the game will throw an imaginary dice to decide if assistance is forthcoming.....provided the nearest Luftwaffe base is within flying range of course.

Are the Luftwaffe bases in set places or can I just use the coast of the occupied German areas?
Also, once you have contact, how often do you update? Does this draw the attention of any escorts?
Thanks,
BP
I know you must be in sight of 3 ships at least to send a succesful message. In this event, you will read your sent message in radioroom (M) with convoy grid, speed, course and sighting hour. Expect an air support within 1-2 hours.. if you are in the cover range, of course!
There is a Condor base near Brest, with a 800km of radius (see campaign.mis files in Data/Campaign).

Never seen a friendly aircraft in the Atlantic/North Sea, even after sending contact reports.
I've been playing a career in the Med and have seen them attack a 4 ship convoy I had just attacked and later on a single Greek vessel just as I was about to launch an eel. They threw my solution off due to changing speeds(due to damage they caused). I saw she was unarmed and I popped up to get her with my gun before I wasted eels only to have the flyboys get the credit.
They attacked one other 3 ship convoy on another patrol after I sank the Aquatania :D and they got the Large Troopship that was with her.
I never sent a contact report in any of the cases.

Hello sharkbit
Do you play stock, GWX, WAC, NYGM ?
I ask because obviously they are different, with different Campaigns, and different Air Bases.
With WAC I saw air attacks in enemy harbors, nothing more. With GWX nothing never.
I try to insert a german large air base (a secret one...) in Azores Islands or Madeira, but I received CDT. . . :shifty:
But the game accept improvement for bomber's speed and radius . . . :D

I'm playing GWX2.1 right now. Waiting on a new rig to update to GWX3.0.
I may give NYGM a try when I get to the end ogf the war in my 2 GWX careers(one in the Med and the other out of Lorient).
:)
The LW did show up once during one of my Med campaigns. Even though they weren't really invited (hadn't sent a contact report) they were most welcome. I had just hit & sank a freighter that had been escorted by two AA destroyers. The escorts were busily hunting for me; trying to exact revenge when a flight of 3 Ju-87's & another flight of 3 Ju-88's arrived on the scene. They provided a much needed distraction for the escorts & I was able to slip away unmolested. When I last saw them the aircraft were pounding the crap out of the AA destroyers; one ship was burning & listing heavily...:har:
