Just to the right of the direction wheel is a black circular "object" on the hydrophone control panel.
Upon mouse overing (mouse overing?) the tip "ambient Volume" comes up.
I can't figure out what this does. I click on it, click on parts of it, try to rotate it and I can never detect any changes in the game.
Is this functionality not implemented in the final version of SH3 (or do some of the more popular mods disable this control)
Or am I just not getting it....... again :88)

When I use it I find that it increases the volume slightly.

Yeah the volume knob at the hydrophone station does not operate as a knob that you can turn like the wheel. Click on the top half of the knob once or twice to increase the volume of the hydrophones, which helps for hearing distant contacts before the hydrophone operator can hear them. You only have to do it once after relaoding a save or at the start of a patrol to last the entire gameplay session.

Ok, I usually just turn up the speakers on my computer.
I will try using that knob and see if that helps me.
Thanks

it helps to point the hydrophone directly at the stern, and keep the electrics running for a sec, when turning it up, that way you can hear the difference and when its at max volume.

Good point :yeah:
Usually when I point the sensor aft all I get is Bernard fartin back in the aft torpedo room

Other than the answers already given, which are all right I think, its main function is to switch between being able to hear distant objects better and bring them nearer, via the top half of the knob, and to differentiate between various different sounds at closer ranges, bottom half. For example,if pointing the HPs towards a large field of noise like a convoy, and you drop the ambient volume you can actually pick out different sounds better, like a tanker amongst merchants. ;)
I think thats its main function,at least I use them for that purpose :yep:
Oh,and in conjunction with some good speakers and stereo headphones (surround sound ideally) and you turn your volume up even higher then you have a very good set of virtual HPs :D
oh! is it really working in this manner? :o
I'll try in this way soon!! thanks for the news
