One Thousand Miles and Counting: Fusion Hybrid Breaks 1,000 Miles on Single Tank, Presses on (http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/prnewswire/200904271150PR_NEWS_USPR_____DE05693.htm)

The Ford Fusion Hybrid team has achieved more than 1,000 miles -- over 47 continuous hours -- on a single tank of gas, raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Passing the 1,000 mile mark at 9:08 a.m. this morning, the team will continue as their unmodified, regular production Fusion Hybrid has nearly one-third of a tank of fuel remaining

The most fuel-efficient, mid-sized sedan in America -- the Fusion Hybrid -- driven by a team of Ford hybrid engineers, a fuel efficiency expert and a NASCAR star, achieved more than 80 miles per gallon using Eco-Driving techniques
Fantastic!

Disclaimer, I own a lot of Ford stock. You should too :shucks:

It is highly impressive tho I highly doubt John Doe can push it that far on a tank of gas.

Ford can compete I will give it that. But just barely. And only because it was not addicted to the SUV craze like GM was.

Ford is in decent shape, although I personally wouldn't be buying stock in them. Alan Mulally is a great guy to have at the helm.

@ Neal That Torino you posted in my Poncho thread was considered a mid-sized car in it's time. :haha:

And they state the Fusion is mid-sized. :har:

It's the size of a Honda.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Are they not working on a
Battery driven car?
It seems the future is geared
at electric battery operated cars
in the UK,
Rechargeable at points,
the UK Government has poured millions into this
project,
with Ford,and other companys,
eco friendly too :D

Say what???? The SUV was Ford bread and butter....the Explorer was the SUV that shot Ford into a major manufacture of the SUV years ago that spurned other manufacturer to follow suit. They still sell Explorers like hotcakes. The F150 is the largest seller. Throw in the Mustang....all gas guzzlers yet they survive in the small car market with the Fuzion and years ago it was the Escort.

http://www.edmunds.com/ford/explorer/review.html

With fair confidence, one could point to the Ford Explorer as the catalyst that started America's love affair with the SUV. Ford's midsize creation was perfectly timed for the SUV boom that began in the early 1990s. Certainly there were SUVs before the Explorer, but they were mostly utilitarian in nature. The Explorer was the first go-to SUV for the Everyman. Throughout its life, the Ford Explorer has promised to deliver versatility, a reasonable amount of comfort, affordability and, perhaps most importantly, more style than a station wagon or minivan. Seemingly, it succeeded. During much of the '90s, Ford was consistently selling more than 400,000 units a year.

Chrysler was the mini-van maker that cause the other manufacturer to follow suit.

GM demise is poor quality ugly vehicles. GM was the followers in all catagories but quality and attractiviness they did not have.

Ford is fine for the moment. The problem currently, if GM goes Chapter 11 this will give them time to retool and work on things that reduce overall costs to produce cars all the while no one asking for the payments owed on loans. GM has the potential to reduce costs of everything during the chapter 11 protection and can come out a sleek car company. Ford does not have this option and must continue to operate and pay bills as normal. In the meantime, find ways to reduce cost and keep up with the potential that GM/Chrysler could survive under Chapter 11 being a great company when the smoke clears.

However, I prefer to purchase from a stable car company and I think most are in the same mind. This is what Ford has going for it in this present climate.

Okay wtf is 'Eco-Driving' techniques ?

Kind of reminds me of CSX's commercials stating they can haul tons of freight some large number of miles on a single gallon of fuel. Hell yea, as long as its downhill ! :rotfl:

Eco-Driving - It's a stupid name for driving sensibly, not ridiculously fast, smooth gear changes, properly inflated tires (lol etc)

@AVG, It was a nightmare in Iraq last year the air con was constantly full of dust and sand so had to be clean out almost 3 times a week if you were out on ops.; Even then it did not make much differnce, Due to the fact that the cab had a extra 3 ton of armour on. And it's so hot in the summer out there.

@Letum, That is what i drive at my normal unit im just on a 2 year detachment out here. But no doubt i think you could clock up a few laps of the only motorway out here.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid sounds like a nice car for people that can afford them, but what about the rest of us?

The experts during the last oil crisis said that even if America comes up with an energy saving plan that works that the price of gasoline
would then rise even higher due to the law of supply and demand.

In other words gas will still cost $5.00 a gal (in the USA) someday even with a hybrid :yep:

I am glad Ford is moving forward with hybrid cars. :yeah:

This is a parallel hybrid. There are also some series hybrids coming out in 2010 that also looking good.

Soon we should be seeing diesel electric series hybrids in automobiles. Then I will be most happy :)

I really think that diesel electric series automobiles will be great once the technology is ironed out. :salute:

Good going Ford!

Is that what’s also called “Hyper-miling”? Where the driver coasts, as much as possible when traveling downhill;
turns the engine off when at traffic lights and/or while in fast-food drive-thru’s;
setting cruise-control not to exceed 57 mph on highways;
gentle braking, coasting to all traffic stops; etc? (the list goes on.)

Thats what Im thinking. Now in real life just try coasting trying to catch the green light gate from 6 blocks away and see how the folks behind you react. :rotfl:
