View Full Version : Re-Install SH3

I played stock SH3 with none of the patches since 2005. (Truthfully, I was in hiatus from 2006 until a few months ago but now am playing again). I made some upgrades to my RAM & Video card to patch up to 1.4 plus maybe use GWX.

(1) However, when I tried downloading and installing the 1.4 Patch, it didn’t take. :damn: I’ve made some small configuration changes, i.e. increased speed to 4096x and some other ones. It has been a while so I don’t know where I did then and what exactly was changed though it was probably just 5 items max.

Could this be interfering with the patch install?

If so, I plan to uninstall and then reinstall SH3; however, I’d like to hold on to my careers since it was a lot of work.

How would you recommend that I do this? I do have an external hard drive where I can transfer information if needed.

Thanks for your responses. I’m a little slow on the computer lingo (I went through college when they still data-punched and I saw guys with cartons of cards to play Tic-Tac-Toe) so if you think something might need a little more explanation, then please embellish.

(2) I am also considering rebuying SH3 without StarForce since its fairly cheap. I’d rather do this since my disk is getting scratched and I’ve had some problems with it as of late. Can I download SH3 and still not lose my careers?

(3) How would I get rid of StarForce since I’m sure it is currently in my computer? I don’t know exactly what it does but I keep reading how everyone hates it and that if is kind of invisible. So if you agree that I should reinstall with a 1.4 patched SH3 with no StarForce, please let me how to get rid of StarForce.

Thanks again,
BP

I would recomend uninstalling SH3, go to the Starforce web site and download the removal tool, run it to remove Starforce from your system, buy a new copy of SH3 which comes already patched to 1.4 and Starforce free, install GWX 3.0 and perpare to be blown away by what looks to be a totally new game. Unfortunetly you will lose your current career but, the improvement will be worth it.:yep:

There is no way to save your career when you make these necessary changes, as it pertains to a completely different game

Then is there a way for my to move everything to an external drive and then reinstall a clean copy of SH3 then update the patch? If so, what do I need to move to the external drive.

What I would then end up with is my original game Version 1.0 game (with a career in place) in an external drive and a new 1.4b SH3 game (with a new career) where I might also add on the latest GWX.

Would this work? Would I be able to play both?

Also, I guess I will still have StarForce, is this really a problem? Since my computer is 4 years old and I've had StarForce on it for that long, will I really notice any difference on computer performance if I completely remove my old game and StarForce? Saving an extra second or two for something to happen does not constitute a big saving for me.

Would I be able to do this off the same DVD disk (2 SH3 copies) or should I download a new game. If I download, can I only do this through Ubisoft since I think subsim only has a DVD game?

I know I've asked a lot of questions but I appreciate any help.

Thanks,
BP

To my knowledge, if you patch to q.4b and install GWX there is no way your saved games will work. Most Kaleuns in real life were promoted after 5 or 6 patrols and were at other jobs (frequently training and or desk jobs, and not on subs anymore.
The new DVD are starforce free, already patched to 1.4b and do not require the disk to be in the drive to play the game. And they cost about $10.
I don't know about downloaded games.
If you wish, you can save your SH3 folder from My Documents, reinstall, and then place the SH3 folder back into My Documents. The worst thing that will happen is CTD. In which case, delete and run SHIII again and you are fine.

I never had any careers to save, as most of my Kaleuns went down with their ships.

To remove starforce, google it and it will take you to the web site where you can download the tool to remove it.
