Hockey - Brutal hand-to-hand combat.......on ice skates

Who would come up with a sport like that?

Let's see

We need big burley guys with big sticks.

We will make some "rule" about not being to "intentionally" hit each other with the stick, but allow slamming of bodies. In fact we need to encourage this.

We need something small and hard that travels very fast to cause the maximum potential damage and give the combatants .. uh ... players something to focus on. I got it a Hockey puck (so named because the first person to get hit in the mouth muttered, between bleeding gums and broken teeth, what the puck was that?)

hmm The "sport" still missing something. What can we add to make this unique. Other than the sticks it sounds like Rugby.

"Smedely, you had your hand up. Got an idea?"

"Uh put em on unicycles?"

"Smedely, you don't have to attend these meetings any more. Thank you."

"Milton, got anything better than unicycles?"

"How bout puttin em on iceskates?"

And the rest was history. :woot:

Have you ever been to a professional hockey game?

True there is some off what you are mentioning, but there is also a tremendous amount of skill, speed, creativity, and clean body checking ( yes there is a proper way to do this ) .....

Plus it's a contact sport and the lads playing are well protected. Hockey gear today is much different than it once was. It's not that far from armor.

As far as being brutal, you could also say that about.

- American Football
- Basketball
- Baseball ( bench clearing brawls, pitchers beaning batters etc. )
- Soccer
- Insert many other professional sports here

Yeah, he's a beast :yep:
Edit: The only fights I do not like are the staged ones. In the end it's a part of the game, and if they were not you may as well
hand the players meat cleavers, because that is what their sticks would become.

Yeah that was a rough one last year

Russia will be tough again this WHC, especially if Washington gets put out of the NHL Playoffs. Ovechkin and Semin will most likely join the team then.

What is interesting is that these championships will be a springboard to next years Olympic Games in Vancouver. I know
Team Canada in many ways is treating this years WHC as sort of a try out for 2010.

Haha, what a great game (Finland-Norway)! Jarkko Ruutu got in to trouble by trying to knock a Norwegian guy out with his helmet. Farking love that guy. :har: Abit before that Norwegian really really really wanted to have some Finn's stick, so they ended up slamming each other in the face in the corner. :haha:

Very exciting game between Germany and Switzerland with a physical 2nd period and a few questionable referee decisions...
At least Germany earned a point now and maybe gets the second in overtime or in the shootout.

Edit: nope, they don't. Nevertheless it was a good game by Team Germany (and Switzerland as well).

What a great game going between Finland & Czech! 3rd period starting with 3-3. Czech side really have been trying to piss Ruutu off, but have only end up being themselves in the box. As usual, when it's an important game, 90% of team Finland turns into a bunch of retard f**k-ups, the same darn thing every year. Luckily we have few good players who seem to be able to stay frosty.

Now, we just need 1, preferably 2 goals and a nice fight between Ruutu and someone to seal the great game. :yeah:

What kind of minor hockey system do you guys have in Finland. It used to be here ( 20 years ago when I played more competitively ) that double\triple A started at the Bantam age level ( 13-15 year olds ) now this type of hockey is started at the Novice age level ( 8 - 9 year olds ).

I struggle a bit with that as I think it does produce a better hockey player but I also think it turns some kids off the sport due to burnout and also from pressures from their parents. To me it's the quality of coaching vs. the quantity of play that makes a difference.

Case in point, after regular hockey season here, which ended in late March, I had a chance to put my middle son in a Spring Hockey League, if he would have played he would have gotten an extra 16 games under his belt. But I checked around and did not hear many positive things about the coaching so we decided to not put him in. I would rather put him in a good hockey school for a week.

Great Web Site from Hockey Canada: http://www.hockeycanada.ca/

Anyway, I am curious at what kind of developmental programs other countries have.

Yesterday's Canada - Finland was imho far by the most entertaining match in this tournament so far. It was great to watch two teams attack aggressively and drive home tackle after tackle. The score being pretty close all the time also had the effect that neither team could really afford to chill out, so the pace was kept nicely until the end. Judging by what I've gathered from a few different interviews the players enjoyed it too. At least Hannes Hyvönen said "It was great to finally play some real hockey"

The end result was a bit of a let down after such a great game, but certainly not a shame. The shootout was just what you'd expecet from a game like this, even if I rofled pretty hard when they put Ruutu on the ice, not just once but THREE TIMES :haha: The guy isn't certainly known for his puck handling skills, but did a great job nevertheless.

In the end it doesn't matter whether it's USA or Latvia. You'd had to win both anyway to take the title.

Yea :damn:

Too bad shots on goal don't count in hockey(something like 60-30 to Finland), but only goals. Overanxious attacking resulted in USA getting a few excellent counter-attacks(one 4 vs. 1 among others), and that's something you can't afford against a team like that. The game was again quite pleasant to watch with both teams attacking aggressively, and the goalies having to really stand on their heads as a result. Very good goaltending at both ends.

I think I'll jump on the Canada bandwagon from now on :haha:

Over his career he has been pretty flaky, at least from what I have seen in the NHL, though he now plays in the KHL. But he does have those moments when he gets hot as a pistol.

I'd say both Canada & Sweetpies can take the title from Russia. But the question is, can the sissy swedes win Canada tonight? I doubt it. :hmmm:

Sweden is always tough. I'd like to see the Canadians leading by a couple of goals with about five minutes left of the third period thinking they've already won. :o

I think Jim meant the whole Canada vs. Russia final thingy. But as he's getting older, his memory doesnt work that well anymore and he forgot which one was the Canadian flag so he just used the Canucks' logo. :O:

It was a good game, bottom line is that we could not put the puck in the net. Lots of shots, but that means nothing if you can't find the back of the cage.

Hmm... Sounds like like a team I know. They did the same against Slovakia, Belarus, Canada and USA :wah:

Good final it was though, and quite a bit rougher than most of the previous games. Not many penalties, but plenty of hard checks and others stuff that would have earned you a penalty before. It was entertaining :yeah:

Yeah it was a good game in the end.

I can't wait until the Olympics next year, it will be a great tournament. There are just so many quality player now, from all over the world. Also some great young talent to watch. I know Canada will have a nice mix of young guns along with seasoned veterans.

I just would not want to be Steve Yzerman, the General Manager who will be selecting our team.
