For those members that are moving on to Vista as an OS, do not think Vista will not let you run the game. I run Vista 64 Home Premium and SH4 runs perfectly. There are however a few things recommended! From personal experience I did the following to allow Vista to run SH4:

1. Create a root folder for your game(s). I created a root folder off the hard drive and named it GAMES2. I named it GAMES2 because there is a GAMES folder supplied by the Vista OS. Less confusion. This folder contains the MS provided OS games, ie chess, etc. So, you can name it KILLER SUB GAMES if you want. Up to you!

2. Once done, insert your SH4 disc for installation. When prompted showing the files will load to the X86 files, click Browse and navigate to your newly created root folder for your games. Click OK and let it load.

3. Once complete, install your patches or 1.5 add on disc. No worries, the install will find your UBI folder and load correctly.

4. As a side note, sometime the very first time you start SH4 with Vista, the menu screen will be black yet the music is playing, etc. No problem, open up the task manager and shut down the game. Go to your video card tweak program and reset the card to the default values(usually just a box to check and click OK. Start the game and the menu should not be black anymore. The game should look as it usually does. Close it out. Go back to your video card tweak program and reset the card to your liking. That's it, you will never have to do that again(unless you do a complete reinstall down the road)

5. Install JSGME. Runs like it does in XP. No issues here.

As far as running the install as administrator, no harm in doing that. I did not have do this. Some folks UAC are different from Vista OS to Vista OS. That is about it really. If anyone has anything to add, please do:yeah:

I run Vista (32bit) and just installed mine under program files.

I did have to completely uninstall my virus protection software - there was one service running that I could not stop/disable... Uninstalled, rebooted...

Rebooted after base game install, installed 1.5/UBoat, rebooted, created MODS folder, installed JSGME...

No problems here...

Everyone seems to have one way or another to get SH4 going in Vista. Best part is, SH4 can play on the Vista OS. That is all that matters in the end!:yeah:

To save you some headaches if you play MultiPlayer..

Install SH4 to default Directory.. this is the only game I have which must be in default Directory in Program Files.. if not:

When conecting with others..all seems fine.. once you hit a ship with a torp.. you will kick everyone from the game..except yourself...

dunno why... just does happen if installed in another place... did for me..

Ofcourse if you don't play Multiplayer.. it works fine anyplace installed.

Just got my "Gold Edition" in the mail today, shipped from the US, since I couldn't find it anywhere here.

Installed just great on vixta 64, and runs like a charm............. as long as you remove EVERY trace of prior installations.

I just dug up SH4 and decided to install it again for the first time since release (took a break back then because of all the bugs and lack of mods, and had almost forgotten about it).

First time installed on this PC, Vista 32-bit home. Installed fine and worked, but screen resolution was off, so some parts of the screen didn't show. Was not possible to adjust screen resolution in game options. Then I set the exe-file to 'Run in XP-compatible mode', and everything works good.

I did everything you said to do and it worked amazingly. Expect I have no sound.

No sound. I do not believe that is caused by the game. Check your system set up in the sound program you have.

Try turning off hardware acceleration on your sound card and see if it helps.
What kind of sound card do you have?

Do you mean mods loading through JSGME? Are you able to get in all the patches?

what I mean is that I can only load up 1.2.. after that none of the mods will install (note i do not use JGSME because it wouldn't work on my computer)

JSGME does not work on your computer? If not you are pretty much hosed. I have never heard of JSGME not working on any OS. Sure you have loaded the game and all like I suggested?

Hi there,
I am sure if this issue was posted before some where, but I really didn't see it.
I was wondering if anyone can help me here with this new mod 1.5.0 for SH4. I purchased the game and the expansion online from Direct2drive so I don't have a physical DVD of the game.
I tried installing the mods by coping it to the SH4 file as it was recommended in the mod -Silent Fire Elite 1.5.0- and was able to get it to play normally through the first scenarios but as soon as I try to change the year past 1941 to any other campaign or submarine, it always me to get to the screen of the operations room with the big map on the wall then it crashes, however, as long as I stay in 1941 playing the same campaigns, then am fine.
I really would like your help with this problem, it would be a shame to waste such a good game.
Running Duo core E8400, 4Gig ram, Geforce 8800 GS, 500Gig HD.

Thank you

Since adding the u-boat pack, my antivirus, Kaspersky, keeps flagging SH4 on launch as having suspicious :arrgh!: activity. If I don't click the small announcement window closed, I don't see the program starting up.

Hello everyone!

I have a very strange problem when playing SH 4...

In fact, this is for all the games i'm playing...
So i've installed the game on my laptop and there was really no problem, then i launched the game, no problem either, but when i start playing, about 10 minutes into the game, the screen goes black and the sound disables...

I've checked the system requirements many times, i've set the details the lowest possible, but i came to the conclusion that everything should run perfectly, except it doesn't... I have this video card: Nvidia Geforce 9600M GT

I really don't know what to do anymore...

Thanks in advance,

Vansteken

NOTE

I resolved all my issues with a fresh clean install of the game and mods. If you fail to do this you run the risk of one corrupt file ruining the whole can.

I have ran the same version of SH4 for over four or five years now. I have used JSGME to add or disable mods.

I wanted to create a fresh install and then re add the mods I wished to run which are listed here:

Generic Mod Enabler - v2.6.0.157
[Z:\Silent Hunter\MODS]
OpsMonsun_V705
OMv705_to_V720
OMv720_Patch5
OMEGU_v300
OMEGU_v300_Patch7
OM_Harder_Escort_L2
OM_Pac_Env
UBM Missions

The issue I am now having is that I can not seem to get within 20 miles of any enemy vessel with out the game crashing to desktop. I can be inside my own Task Force surrounded by everything from Battleships and Carriers to escorts and even enemy warplanes all around us the game will play fine.

It seems however if I get within 20 miles of an enemy warship the game crashes. Would anyone happen to know why this might occur. This is not the fault of the mods. This I know. I have ran this mod list in the past and there has never been an issue.

It began to occur after I added some mods to my Allied Mods list on my former installation and even though I deleted all known folders and files after the uninstall and cleared the registry of Silent hunter information once I reinstalled the game the issue has returned.

Any help would be appreciated.

(UPDATE)

I removed every single mod and ran the Sibuyan Sea single mission for U-Boats. This has been my test mission and every time I get within 20 miles of the enemy the game crashes. After removing the mods I no longer crash. This can not be the mods fault because I have used this same mod order on my last installation and it works perfectly. Not only in this order but the same folders and files as before as well.

Has anyone ran into a situation where a fresh install simply did not install as well as a first install?

My guess is that there is something about the mission that is not compatible with the mods you are running.

I've made missions that worked ok, then CTD when I tried to use them with a different mod set up. Neither the mods set up, or the missions were inherently flawed, but they wouldn't work together.

when you did your re install, did you download to default, or did you make a folder then download it to that?

merc4ulfate

The Sibuyan mission is stock with 1.5

I have thought of something though. I did not run fresh mods. I moved them from folders that had been used by the game so now I am going to reopen the zip files fresh and have a fresh game with fresh mods and see if this fixes the issue.

I'm thinking it will and I was just not thinking straight by using old files instead of fresh mod files.

The install was recent and to a seperate hard drive than my system drive. I do not use defualt setting for application installations unless it is hard coded in the software.

Recently got SH4, but it crashed whenever I tried to use the periscope. I'm hoping this could fix it.
