Snorkel Depth & Hydrophone

If I were to run at snorkel depth and stop my engines for a moment, does the hydrophone work?

Now if so, and I hear screws, say at 130° and I'm on a course of 270°, what course would I travel to head to the sound?

Same course and I hear a ship at 320° what would my new heading be to get closer to the ship?

Now if so, and I hear screws, say at 130° and I'm on a course of 270°, what course would I travel to head to the sound?---270+130=400, 400-360=40.you will turn to travel at 40 degrees but note that the target is moving so don't expect to find it there .search to find tutorials about hunting with hydro,its very interesting.

Rob: Easy way. On the compass there are two sets of numbers. The outer one will give you the heading of the boat. The inner one will always point to the bow of your boat (not North, as the larger one is marked). So if you get a report that the sighting is at 340, check the inner compass markings and head that direction. You don't have to be very accurate, as the sighted object is moving and won't be on that heading for long.

RobYes, if I may skip in, hydrophone/periscope direction PLUS own course. But NOT subtracting the result from 360 degrees. You should subtract 360 from the result (the opposite of what you said), and ONLY subtract the 360 IF the result is BIGGER than 360, since there are only 360 degrees in a circle. Anything beyond that is starting a new lap.

I think the depth at which the hydrophone starts working is about 10m. I don't know what the snorkeldepth is.

I went all the way down to the Canary Island in July 1944 thinking there would be ships there. I covered the whole area and found nothing.

I'm think of going over to the African coastline and down to Freetown.

Is it worth the trip in July 1944?
