This kind of thing happens more often than one might think.
I personally helped some poor guy who had to ditch a rental Cessna 102 in a vacant lot several years ago.
"Check the gas for water"... duh... uh...
Anyhow glad it was a safe outcome.

Very lucky there wasn't much traffic about at the time.
This somehow reminds me of Mathias Rust....he obviously wasn't as lucky :DL

Something simillar happened less than a block from my high school when I was in the 11th grade. In the middle of math class, some guy tried to crashland an ultralight on a nearby boulevard.
It... Didn't turn out well for the two persons onboard.

Lucky for him, but many don't have the same level of luck!

There was water in his fuel?

You're sure right about that one. Coming east out of Memphis quite a few years ago, I watched a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow pass my truck going in my direction about the same time as a single engine small aircraft was trying to dodge traffic to land on I-40 on the westbound side. The pilot did an excellent job of merging into traffic, but I almost broke my brain trying to figure the odds of those two things occurring at the same time and place.

One of the first things you do in pre-flight checks is test the fuel tanks for water.
It used to be a much more serious problem but it still is something to be checked.

I dident help all that much other than drive out to him, saw that he was okay, and took him to a telephone. This was before everyone had a cell phone.
But checking fuel qaulity espically in a rental is a must. You dont know how long its been sitting around.

Yeah, I'm aware, because I'm a pilot. I'm asking you if in this specific case, there was water in the fuel as you stated....
