Hi all!
Just started playing SH3 again and thought I might come on here and hang out for a while:D
I dont know if this is the right area but here goes.
I started on a new campaign in 1939(earliest if Im correct) in the best sub (IMO): The IIA.
I recived orderes to patrol in grid AN21 for 24hours.
I sailed from the harbours in Willhelmshaven with people cheering and music playing, thinking: This will be a rutine patrol.
After a few days with nice weather and calm sea - I managed to reach the patrol grid and told my XO to dive to periscope dept for hydrophone searching.
16hours went by without 1 single ship passing by on hydrophones and I started thinking that its about time to turn back to base, when suddenly a sound emerges from the natural sounds of the sea.
The sonar man manages to find out that it was a warship - so I orderd flank speed to engage.
I got within 3km of the ship when I ordered Silent Running and periscop up, hoping it was a big ship like bouge or maybe revange but found out that it was a Destroyer (not sure which but it had Dept charges) so I backed off, however - somehow it foound me and bombed me. But I survived with minimal damage.
Thinking I should head back to base for repair and supply - I started looking on the map and saw I was within range of Scapa Flow. Quickly I turned around my ship and sailed towards the enemy harbour.
1 day passed and I got all kinds of radar readings and hydrophone sounds. Immidiatly I knew that this would be my undoing (that I would die on 1st patrol). So again, I orderd silent running and plotted a course INTO the harbour. However - luck was on my side. The weather had changed to "typical british" - Heavy fog and rain. Staying close to the buttom, I mangaged to get passed the Destroyer / Torp-boat patrols and found myself in the harbour looking for targets.
Again my sonar man found a warship, however this time it was stationary.
I thought - " I only get 1 chance of this so I might aswell take it."
I continued towards the stationary ship and raised periscope.
There was no sight of it. Only when I got within 400m I saw a siluete of what looked like a huge ship. I closed within 350m and I saw the distinct colors and shape of a Illustrious Fleet Carrier - just sitting there.
Quickly putting my torpedoes at 6m dept, I launched 3 torps and watched - waiting - scanning for Destroyers or worse, when finaly I hear the Carriers engine come to life. Knowing that she saw my torps comming I knew I would not hit her. However just as I ordered a general retreat and lowered periscope - I heared 3 LOUD explosions.
To my suprise, all of my torps had hit the target and the carrier was leaning towards starborad witha 45degree angle. just a few seconds later she capsized and exploded. The celebration was quickly stopped when the sounds of a..."ping"...was heared. Again - The same Destoyer that was hunting me in the north sea had again found me.
She bombed me again, but again my crew performed beyond service and managed to keep the sub alive long enought to escape the harbour and reach the open sea where we dived to 120m and waited for the destroyer to give up chase.
When we got back to willhelmshaven, we were met with cheers and music. We docked the ship and I reported in to my commander. I was handed a "Job well done!" and recived a Knights Cross with Oak leafs award and was allowed to decorate my XO with Iron Cross 2nd class and shower my crew with U-boat badges.
