Now I can see why he never had many lines in his movies (http://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/entertainment/Jackie-Chan-Should-be-Kicking-Himself.html) :o

Chan reportedly told a group of business leaders in the southern Chinese province of Hainan that a free society may not work on the mainland. "I'm not sure if it's good to have freedom or not," he said Saturday. "I'm gradually beginning to feel that we Chinese need to be controlled. If we're not being controlled, we'll just do what we want."

He certainly has used his own individual freedom to make a name for himself and a huge career. These remarks made by him are an absolute insult. And totally arrogant towards Chinese people. Something tells me, he's going to regret uttering these remarks.

I'm wondering if there wasn't something lost in translation here. Every society needs some controls or anarchy will soon reign. Maybe that's what Jackie meant?

Possibly, but he mentioned Hong Kong and Taiwan as contrasting examples. Both are prominent bastions of the free market, and enjoy much more individual freedom than mainland China. I think his intention was fairly clear.
I don't see what the big deal is, though. Hollywood is full of film stars that think other people need to be controlled and no one cares. :DL
