I recently went out on a boat with a friend of mine to go night time fishing. We were sitting there not really getting any bites when I noticed what looked like the stars reflecting off the water. After we turned off the lights I noticed they were green. There was a whole lot of them, and some would like disintegrate in the water. No one had a clue what they are, and its hard to google something like this. Was wondering if anyone had experience with them and know what they are.

Sounds like plankton, if they are disturbed they emit light, so make the sea glow.

Lots of glowing creatures in the sea

Im thinking you saw phytoplankton

Ive seen swarms of glowing jellyfish float beneath the keel while at anchor at night. At first it makes you do a double take on your beer :rotfl:

You should see what they look like underwater with the lights turned off. Amazing stuff.

Many years ago a buddy of mine and I were drifting in his 16ft speedboat knocking back a couple beers in the middle of Penobscot bay one summer night.

Just kidding around I was humming a few bars from the Jaws movie theme song "na na....na na.....na na na..." when off to the side something very large, i'd say about 3-4ft in diameter and as long as the boat, swam at us a couple feet underwater, passing underneath and away in the opposite direction.

It was too dark to tell what it was but you could see the general outline by trails of phosphorescence around it. Freaked us right out. We quickly fired up the motor and got the hell out of there.

Maybe it was a whale. Though it could have been Great White....

Or it was just a dolphin or sea lion and with an active imagination exacerbated by being in a slightly inebriated state, it grew to epic proportions!

In any story involving a boat and alcohol, creatures are expected to grow to epic proportion.

Where do you think sea monsters come from?

This "glow phenomenon" has even been known to save lives: See the movie "Apollo 13" wherein "Jim Lovell" (actor Tom Hanks) speaks about the glowing wake churned up by the passing of a large ship.... An aircraft carrier, in his case.

And how it led him home.

They have glowing condoms? :o Gotta get few of those! I always have hard time "navigating". It usually plays out that I end up having sex with an electric socket. :nope:

It looks like it might've been phytoplankton, although its hard to tell since I cant find a picture of phytoplankton that isn't zoomed in.

The flash of light you saw in the sea was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Now if you pardon my sunglasses, would you please look at the tip of this pen?

Move forward three inches.

Back up three inches.
