The thread got closed before I could share this handy little tip.
My brother is a silversmith and he has had success in repairing scratched disks on the silver polishing machine. It will look very scratched afterwards, but every one he's done for me runs fine. I've also had results using stone polish and some water on a piece of leather. I can't guarantee anything but if it's kaput anyway, what have you got to lose?
If you don't know a jeweler then you might try taking the disk to a shop and seeing if they can help for a small fee. Might just be the strangest request they've had in a while!
Moderators please feel free to lock this since I know I'm sort of answering an already locked thread but this one's too useful not to share.
ok, I will tell you a method that is worth the Nobel Prize so pls do tell anyone else, ok? You have to take a tissue and a tooth paste. Then you gently apply the paste on the surface and cover it all with a thin layer and remove it with the tissue. It is important that the paste don't have and addtional stuff like super whitening grains etc. Just normal tooth paste. And voila(a French word):yeah:

Hmm. I'm gonna try this one on the small pile of disks I've got queued up for the polishing machine! Cheers

i know im late to the party but here are my disk repair tips:
while there are all sorts of home remedies for scratched disks, they all have one main thing in common, they use something to leave a film or residue behind to clear up the scratches so the disk reads correctly.
the safest and longest lasting method is to use automotive car wax, its non perishable and not a food product that decays. this is good for all your disks since it helps keep them cleaner and will prevent your other disks from being scratched in the first place because the wax protects the finish.
for more ambitious efforts for serious scratches you can try the car headlight lens polishing kit on them to "refinish" the disk but take care not to overheat or use enough pressure to crack it.
i once knew a guy who used banana peels to rub on the disks and it worked but he couldnt figure out why his room, and his disk drive, smelled like old sneekers all the time lol.
