Anyone find themselves keeping a log in a workbook along with all sorts of calculations (range, speed, time, ect.) I find it good for remembering previous patrols, or going over different tactics that have worked in the past.

Oh I have a whole book full of calc, formulas for different tactics.
They should put a journal in the game for us to take notes on.

Is there an advantage to keeping the log? I am sure the obvious one... convoy routes and such - but anything else? Like an in-game benefit?

You bring up a good point of interest. I am going to do that when i start a real time game. I am going to stick with a Sargo boat for the war. I crave immersion and having spent 72 days submerged in the Med in 81 I can tell you that these sims need a more immersive quality to them and I hope we get that in SH5. There is no real sense of communication with the crew or the ability to write your own log other than what is scripted. There is no real way to drill the crew or anything else that makes the patrol more interesting between contacts. So what I will do is simulate some of things and incorporate them into an actual patrol log. I can simulate drill by taking the crew to battle stations periodically and practice crash dives accordingly as well. Also I will reference the real patrol logs of the boat I take and see if I can mirror some of their patrols by not immediatly going back to base after the mission is complete, but rather refit and stay at sea. There really is not much to upgrade with on the American boats anyway.

That sounds very cool. I never go back to base after the mission is complete,and,since RSRDC is always giving you more tasks,until you are out of torps,or getting low onfuel,it makes sense to refit,refuel and head back out without ending the patrol.

I've been keeping detailed patrol logs in SH3 for years now - contacts chased, distance traveled, average speed, daily position and weather reports. After the patrol is done I type them all up, and change the stupid "Ship Sunk!" notifications to more realistic attack descriptions, saving the tonnage and names for the end-of-patrol summary.
I haven't played SH4 enough to be serious about a career yet, but I'll be doing the same there soon.

Nope, I wing it every patrol:D
.... and change the stupid "Ship Sunk!" notifications .......
You might appreciate this SS - I got tired of the "Ship Sunk" and stock "Enemy, Friendly, and Neutral Unit Destroyed" too, so I edited my menu.txt to say "Target Destroyed" (like SHCE):
4140=Target Destroyed!;Enemy Unit Destroyed
4141=Target Destroyed!;Friendly Unit Destroyed
4142=Target Destroyed!;Neutral Unit Destroyed
I only keep a log if I need to write a patrol report and I'm taking a nice little break from that.
Happy Hunting!
